I love how everyone just says "what?" about a few times with long pauses after they find glitches.
Noel because it's like this. you're trying your hardest to speed run a game. you're right behind the current champion by only a minute and you're ready stressed that you'll fail. then suddenly you skip a part you didn't know you could skip, and now you're ahead.
It started to get annoying like 7 times in all the videos
Garo and Okay Fam is right. The first reaction is ''what!'' and you think whatever happened was crazy. But these guys know every fucking thing about the game so when something new happens, they try to figure out what happened and they still can't figure it out and dumbfounds them which isn't exactly weird as they're most likely the first people to ever witness that shit. Specially, as Okay Fam says, if you're in the middle of a run trying to beat the world record it just makes the whole situation so much crazier. You also probably start thinking that this might be a game changer to how the game is played as well.
My favourite reaction was the rayman one.
lol it was kinda annoying, but you gotta think these people play these games 3920384902834 times and know everything about them and then some weird shit they've never seen or heard of before happens. it was like their brains just stopped functioning for 10 seconds

I'm not a speedrunner, but there was one skip that I had discovered on my own by complete accident (which was already found by the community, but still). I was playing DKC2 casually on the Wii one time, and in one of those bonus levels with lava there's a timed barrel near the start by an enemy with the swords. If you shoot downwards, somehow, you'll spin in midair briefly and exit the level, having beaten it.
I was amazed when I saw this and confronted the DKC speedrunning Discord about it. They told me it was a trick that had already been found a few months before, but it was still amazing that I came across it on my own. Wasn't too helpful because I was trying to get the DK coins, but...hey, it's still pretty cool.
One time playing Super Mario Bros., in World 1.2, I somehow managed to get all the way above all the bricks, ran to the right past the end of the level, and found 3 warp pipes! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to record it, and now no one believes me. It will never be done again.

hi, about the Rayman Mr Dark Skip, we first thought it was mr dark's attack, but after more testing, it's actually something different causing this.
Basically you need to first beat the game. Then on the same session (rebooting console screws it up) you need to beat the game again to skip the fight.
The reason nobody really found it before was because nobody really ever tried to beat this game twice in a row in 1 session before ^^

Drek Skip actually works in the same way. You have to beat the game twice on the same boot of a NG+ file.

I would not say it was ever "broken", but there were and are a lot of weird stuff in it if you start looking. Some have been patched.

In terms of speedrunning glitches.
I once fell out of the map without dying and could run around on the bottom of the map all covered in black. It was in co-op and made no sense in any way.
It's extremely broken if you try to break it. But if you're just a casul skrub you're unlikely to find any issues.
This reminds me of the time I was playing Terraria while talking with a friend on Skype and bullshitting that I knew a way to glitch into the jungle temple.
Then I actually glitched into the temple.
Yeah, Hoiking (thats what i assume the clip is) has been known for years in Terraria, but sadly the clip into the temple doesnt really help unless you already got the Temple Key, and doesnt save as much time as it takes to set up the Hoik, so its actually faster to just enter the temple normally.
I used to cheat in terraria by placing a teleporter on the inside of the temple through the door and wiring it to a teleporter on the outside since I wasn't good enough to get the key normally

BL4CKBL4Z3 It helps if you want Solar Ecliose to happen without RNG as you can loot the chests inside the temple without having to beat any bosses.

That skip is old, i used to speedrun life and i got 1 year 2 months 14 days 7 hours 52 minutes 8 seconds 593 miliseconds. The world record is 9 months 2 days 5 hours and 110 miliseconds and it requires super lucky RNG

I just wanted to clarify one thing about the Drek Skip for Ratchet and Clank 1. The infinite jumps you're talking about are a key part of executing Drek Skip, but you missed the most important aspect of it. What initially allows you to skip Drek is that you need to go to another file and defeat Drek on it. For some reason, on Playstation 3 only (sorry ps2 ratchet players), when you beat Drek but do NOT press the button to finish the game, you trick your console into thinking you've defeated Drek... regardless of what file your playing. So, it's technically file manipulation, but we allow it because any ps3 runner can do it. Ps3 is already faster than ps2 rac1 by roughly 4.5-5 whole minutes, so we base community rulings off of the ps3 version.

having not played the HD collection, how is it faster? Is it just more broken?
Aside from Drek Skip, the HD version has faster loads on every planet by a pretty wide margin, as well as little to no lag for the PDA/pause menus, allowing for faster infinite jumps and in-level movie infinite jumps. Aside from that, every single trick is the same in both versions, so there's no point in separating the leaderboards. We just say if you wanna be competitive, you gotta buy the ps3 version.

Honestly I really think that the accidental upward glitch in SM64 should've been number one. After all, NO ONE has been able to re-create it even using the exact way it happened and also with Pannenkoek255's 1000$ bounty on it.

Actually, theres a theory about the TTC Upwarp that it was caused by a random gamma ray hitting DOTA-Teabags hardware at just the right time, see, the glitch has never been recreated in actual gameplay but it has been recreated with some cheat tool by manually flipping a single bit in the games memory when Mario is in a specific spot, which in theory couldve been caused by a rogue gamma ray.
@Plumjet09 ٰ That would be pretty bad actually. Since that trick would have to happen in a run wher the TTC Upwarp is actually used, which would have to be either 70 or 120 Stars, this would save you several seconds and end up causing a time advantage so big, in a run as optimized as Mario 64, if that person doesnt botch the attempt out of irritation, theyd have a decent gap for players to fill. Also also, i feel like if this were to happen, the Community would probably decide to ban the use of TTC Upwarp until they can figure out how the hell to perform it on purpose, and as a result invalidate the run for the time being.

Hey EZScape, Vorpal (twitch) discovered a glitch in Super Meat Boy that allows you to unlock the final stage from world 1, saving 14 minutes off a 17:43 (the run becomes a little over 3 minutes). The glitch was totally accidental and required a bunch of VERY specific things to be done, including: doing levels in a certain order, exiting out of levels early, and glitching warp zones to get more band-aids than intended.
I think it deserves an honorable mention at least.

This is my favorite video of yours so far...the top ten fastest skip videos are neat, but knowing how and why they were discovered is way more interesting to me for some reason. Keep it up, man.

The best accidental glitch i found as a kid was Spyro 3's swim in the air. I'm sure many others found it on accident too and had a blast using it.

ayyy ratchet and clank 1 is on here, that game is the sh*t!. i love casually running it and all the original trilogy games for that matter, i still remember when that was new, the hype was amazing back then. unfortunately, Ricky (ThaRixer) has left speedrunning and as such there is really only a couple of top tier speedrunners of it left. It is such a good game with amazing tech and minimal rng, im suprised runners from like SM64 and other tech-heavy games dont jump in on it, its just so cool!

He doesnt run anymore, because for starters he now plays competitive overwatch, and as he is very tight financially speedrunning was not profitable, especially for a small, little-played game like ratchet and clank speedruns. Overwatch is more financially viable and in general he got sick of speedrunning after several years straight of running jak and rac. His final mark was his godly RAC 1 WR which was only very recently beaten by a runner named Xem, who beat it by one second, with new strats. Ricky was pretty much the best runner in the game, but now Xem has that title. Its a real shame, but i can see why he has moved on. there wasnt anything really in it anymore, and the game is pretty much optimized now, compared to 6-12 months ago.
Deleno Seems fair. He has to pay the bills. I'm gonna miss watching new speedruns from him.
At least we still have Xem. That Ratchet and Clank 3 any% under 32 minute run Xem did was fucking godly.
Yeah that was amazing, it was great to see how the games developed when lots of people ran it. Ricky came back to see xem get the 24:42 rac 1 run, but has now disassociated himself with running. I will miss seeing the almost daily WR breaks that i had the pleasure of watching throughout the year.
Also fact is i have been going for nearly 4 years. It burns you out eventually.

The point of speedrunning is to complete the game as fast as possible, you can play the game the normal way if you so wish of course, but that wouldn't be a speed run.
speedrunners will of probably played that one game more than you have ever played 10 of your favourite games combined. So to say they will have skip half of the game is pretty ironic,

Speedrunning skip strats cannot be confirmed unless you say "What? What?" after discovering them. Otherwise it's a one time thing.
2:19 "During the 100% speedrun you'll now be able to use the Ganondorf warp to skip to Ganon's Tower"? I don't think it would be logical to skip to the endgame sequence like that in a 100% run... ;D
They do the ganondoor skip in the 100% run, it's faster to do so to get certain items for the 100%. Can't tell you exactly because I don't know the full 100% route.
EZScape If I had to guess, it involves the Reverse Bottle Adventure glitch, and putting specific items on the C Right button to manipulate the hexadecimal values for items. I'm not fully sure if that's the method used as it's been a few years since I last looked into this, but basically with barely any items, you can manipulate the game into filling up your items inventory, learned songs, collected pendants, and more
I think the key thing you'd get for wrong warping to Ganon's Tower would be early Bombchus without having to enter Bottom of the Well/pick up lullaby early. You'd have to trigger a wrong warp anyway in order to skip the post Deku Tree cutscene

Jack M Skimming through a 5 month old wr run, this is roughly what happens:
You wrong warp from Gohma's room -> a Tower Collapse map at the very beginning of the run (so you're still Child Link). You save warp so that you're put at the beginning of the "tower climb" section of Ganon's Castle. Runner heads back into the "trials" section of Ganon's Castle. Now, you do need the Golden Gauntlets from the dungeon, but the runner instead chooses to pick up Bombchus first and leave, since explosives give you a lot of fast movement options and child link can't get the gauntlets efficiently. On leaving Ganon's Castle, you end up at Hyrule Castle because you're a child, and you spawn right at the crawlspace leading to Zelda's Courtyard, which is convenient because you need to get Zelda's Lullaby

I think it will. The chances of a hardware malfunction causing something like that are /extremely/ small.
Well, to be fair, it has to be a pretty rare occurrence if there’s only one recorded instance of that glitch in a 20-year-old game that has the most runs *and* the most runners on speedrun.com…
yeah, it most likely isn't anything hardware related... maybe just some slightly "bad" coding... say some timing of 1 in high chance of it working on a frame... and just randomly, his game had done it... to understand it, you'd probably need to get a couple programmers looking for all the possibilities that led up to that in the code...
DLC ENERGY
You're right, but it's not that easy. With a special emulator like nemu and a lot of patience, you can "read" small bits of the code, manually decompiling it from assembly language back into C if you want. But if the glitch is at all complex, you would have to follow what the game is doing while the glitch occurred to have any hope of understanding it, which would require it to be reproducible. E.g. if the glitch isn't in the small bit of code which normally updates Mario's velocity, but is in some other code somewhere else which accidentally overwrites this velocity value, you would have no idea where to look, unless you could reproduce the glitch and watch for any changes to that variable.
Sauraen yeah, that's true... it'd be like fixing a programming error, without the information on where and why it crashed... lol even if you know all the code, you'd be a little blinded...
but yeah, if it's relevant bug you can see, you can understand which part of code is relevant, just not why... i'd say to anyone debugging it out, don't waste your time getting the glitch to happen straight away... go perform an easy glitch an see if you can figure out and understand that one first, cause if not, forget the extreme one... a bug like that is unknown territory here...

what about the Bike Shop glitch in Pokemon Red/Blue?
that was discovered by a guy who messed up practicing a speedrun and accidentally triggered the glitch. (although the glitch isn't aloud in Glitchless Any%, it's still useful.)

I mean that's how the recent Vice City warp was found as well as many of the super mario games, legend of zelda, and pokemon games. So yeah speedrunners do find stuff in game code and use it for exploits.
