  • In this video I have a look at a customers Jeep Compass with the engine light on and the check gas cap light on with a P0456 for a small EVAP leak. These are pretty simple system once you understand how they work.

I HAVE A 2019 JEEP COMPASS TRAILHAWK 4X4. AND IT DOESN'T HAVE A GAS CAP.. IT CAME THAT WAY WHEN I BOUGHT IT FROM ENTERPRISE..IT SURPRISED ME WHEN I SEEN IT, SO ASKED AROUND AND OTHER PEOPLE SAID THEIRS ARE THAT WAY ALSO SO I AM GUESSING THAT JUST HOW THESE ARE MADE.. STRANGE AFTER YEARS OF BEING TOLD THEY HAVE TO HAVE ONE AND MAKE SURE THEY ARE GOOD AND SEALED..

i've seen burrs on filler necks from factory. i use scotch bright to clean dirt mostly in the south which clings to filler necks from static electric as well as the seal on the cap. spray with 3m wet gel or oil so the cap slips when hitting the neck like an oil filter to the block, gets just a little bit tighter, saved folks thousands with these two fixes... thanks for sharing cheers.

    Eric O!
So I did do my intake valves Friday, like I commented on last week!
Many things I didn’t count on!
Like I couldn’t find a position for my big meat head to fit under firewall, to see into the back to cylinders! Got out my hand mirror, and finally could look in to see, how clean, if any walnut shell was left behind! Wowza laying across the motor at 70 years old was tuff!
Finished putting it back together, and could remember one elec connection that I just couldn’t remember where it lived!
Took it for a short drive, after about two miles, bells and whistles went into emergency activation!
Rough idle, 5 mph max, and couldn’t pull a slight incline!
Called a friend to tow me home!
    Pulled out my code reader!
    Turbo waste gate! Service immediately!
    Throttle position malfunction!
Forgot to tighten the clamp on air intake tube to turbo, and found the elec connection I missed!
It was something on the intake manifold, with vacuum hoses, and 2 elec connections!
The elec connection on throttle body, just needed disconnected and reconnected!
Rough idle went away, codes all reset, and it’s running strong, snappy!
Took about 6 hours for that!
Then cleaned the Maf, map sensors, and cleaned battery posts, which they still were pretty clean, oil change , air filters checked!
I’m not scared to tackle most anything!
Ok my mentor, just wanted you to know that pretty much if you can do it, I can do it!

If you get an 'opportunity' to replace the throttle position motor assembly on the 2.4l family of engines, note the short length of the 4 screws that fasten it to the intake manifold. You will most likely find they need to be 20mm longer as only 3 to 4 threads are engaged to the plastic of the manifold. I ordered the correct screws from McMaster-Carr. Order a tap too as the holes should be taped to prevent cracking the plastic.

It was the carquest branded with lifetime warranty. 15% off online orders plus bought it with paypal so 4 payments of $8. now I can pass Illinois emissions (we dont have safety lanes on non-commercial vehicles although we probably should being in the rust belt). The only check eng. light I ever had on my 250K miles Grand Caravan mini van was "small evap leak". I cleaned the gas cap, the seal and the housing around it. Started the engine and the code was gone off my dashboard. It returned about a year later in late fall, so I cleaned the cap again and the warning light was gone again! Been code free for at least 2-3 years since the first code. Newer Jeep/ Mercedes do not have fuel caps you just stick the fuel hose in the tank neck. I suspect this was a common issue with older Jeeps or Dodge and Mercedes vehicles.

Good idea but that gasket seal had a tough life the way the metal was all pitted.

You might see it in a couple years, I have a 2014 compass and had a small evap leak and it was the plastic flange on the fuel pump and transfer pump it was cracked and brittle and leak past the o ring around the fuel pump where it seals to the tank

Have come across that a few times. I think the rust building up under the locking ring is pushing on then cracking the module. That was my guess initially although the purge valve would have been a better guess. This is exactly why we test and not guess because I was wrong on both attempts:)

@unencumbered351 yeah I have no idea why they do that, just figured I'd let people know what I found on my jeep that was causing the small evap leak, alot of people would look past that

@@unencumbered Yup, I actually had no evaporator codes on a Ford Edge, BUT when you filled up the fuel tank, fuel would leak out. The pump housing was cracked, due to rust.

      Absolutely, me included.
First time for me was years ago on either an X3 or X5 with a small evap leak. Spent way too much time. I could smell the leak but couldn't find the smoke :(
      Thanks for your reply.

I believe (the former) Chrysler Corp. patented that evap control system.

My old 07 Dodge Caravan usually trips the gas cap light every 2 years. I take the cap off, lube up the O-ring with petroleum jelly and away she goes for another two years. I do find that every 4 years the o-ring starts to crack. I aways carry a new cap with me because the stupid light bothers me when it cilcks on and 'dings'. lol
