When mom dressed up to get ready to go to the store, we would go to "Rosco Tempo", "Pantry", "Lucky" or "Farmers Market"....I always liked going to Lucky because there was a Chinese food restaurant next door with direct entry and Mom would buy some chicken fried rice on the way out ..... love those memories

It seems like what kills stores is that when the original owners retire or the store gets bought by a new owner, things go south. Often new management tries to run them differently, rebrand them, sell off their real estate, run them into debt, or other means. It just seems like we have let too many mergers and buyouts happen. This killed the local flare and local ownership, and the store becoming part of the local town culture aspect.

It was at the corner of Tropicana and either paradise, or Maryland Parkway, I'm not sure. That was for canned goods and produce. Then we'd go to this little Italian deli to buy cheese and cold cuts. Then to the bread store, and lastly to Schulman's meats for beef, chicken, pork, etc. A shopping day was a full day for grandma and me. Oh, definitely room for a part two on this topic! Northern California had several small to larger chains that went by the wayside over the decades! Food Villa, Fry's, PW Super and Gemco to name a few! Where I went to high school there were two almost identical large retail lot spaces right across the street from each other! One housed a full Alpha Beta and the other had an Albertsons for some reason! A funny thing about the Fry's Supermarkets. When they decided to go into electronics in the 90s they didn't change the font on the signs from the grocery stores and the old mascot that was a smiling grocery bag then became a smiling computer chip! Haha!

Florida had a couple of grocery stores that need to be remembered. My mother worked as a meat wrapper for Thriftway, which was a smaller store that operated as neighborhood markets. Big Star was an early box store where customers brought their own bags and products were stocked in their big cardboard boxes, before Sam's became famous. I also remember locally owned IGA stores that usually operated out of small buildings in poorer neighborhoods and sold what the local people wanted. My mother spent several decades working for the grocery business working as a meat wrapper, starting at Thriftway, then moving on to Publix, then to Big Star and then she retired after almost 20 years with Winn Dixie. When the meat departments became more automated she moved to the front of the store as a cashier at Winn Dixie where she had many customes who would only checkout through her lane.

It is so sad that all these grocery stores were either bought out (in order to destroy the competition by other stores) or had to go out of business because of being pressured out of business by competitors. When I grew up, the town I went to had Jitney jungle, Save-A-Lot, Foodland, Big Star, Piggly Wiggly, and Food World. All that changed by the late 90's. Most of those have went out of business. Now, all that's left is Big Star and a store called AIG. Since there's no competition, besides, Walmart Supercenter, they are both pretty high on their prices. I hate that those are the only choices we have around here. Now, town always feels so crowded (since our population has quadrupled or more within the last 5 years by thousands of immigrants) and there are less places to go. It's so sad that so many retailers of all kinds and restaurants have, or are going out of business now. I've been hearing that it's going to get much worse pretty soon. What are people going to do? I just wish there were more business-minded people popping-up, who know how to run stores and do right by their employees and the public, instead of being so greedy. Also, America needs to fix its own supply chain issues by getting back to making its own products. Somebody has got to wake up sooner or later, I hope.

I agree with your sentiment. Kroger and Albertson's bought up a TON of the stores we and our folks grew up with. Fry's, Ralph's, King Sooper, Tom Thumb, Jewel-Osco, etc. If their merger is approved, it'll mean that the first and second-largest chains merged into one, putting even more small stores and suppliers out of business. Then if people want decent wages and benefits or variety? They close up shop to avoid unionizing and people are left in a food desert. It's already happening and it's sad. Some parts of the large town next to my suburb have no fresh food stores within miles and many don't have transportation. I moved back to my hometown, which still has a 2-store indie "chain" for groceries and I appreciate they're still in business after all these years. I hope they can stay open. America won't fix its issues as long as the end goal is shareholder profit only. There has to be a balance and it's sad.

We had a Skaggs Alpha Beta here in Waco, TX in the early 80's. The Alpha Beta name was dropped at some point but it stayed Skaggs until it closed. The building still exists in the form it was when it was a grocery store except the delivery dock is was closed in. It is now a private school.

The one in Midwest City, OK became Skaggs Albertsons, then Jewel Osco, then just Albertsons before all Oklahoma locations were closed (many then became Homeland). Wal-Mart had a location behind the MWC store that moved to a super center location and built a Neighborhood Market on that site.

I have some fond memories of Grand Union. There used to be one in a town I used to live, until it was taken over by CVS. 😠 I remember residents of the town had tried boycotting it, and I likely would have too if I had been older. It was the only actual grocery store in the town. After it closed, some like my family were forced to go to a grocery store in a nearby town that was more costly. 🤦‍♀️

@@RhettyforHistory The store was average size, I think. Wasn't the biggest, but not small. When Grand Union left ); CVS took over the building, which is unfortunate still there and operating. /:

I remember the old A & P market in Wolfeboro N.H. I shopped there with my mom when I was a little girl many years ago. In all honesty, she preferred a little corner store call the Market Basket which was more expensive, but smaller and easier to navigate. I know A & P is long gone but I think Market Basket still exists as Harvest Market.

I remember Big Bear when I was a grad student at OSU. I was quite surprised to hear they closed up shop a few years after I graduated. I really appreciate the research into the history you do, especially the photographs. It is really interesting to see the photos of how grocery stores changed over the years. I think this is one of the reasons many of these chains disappeared. With the appearance and growth of super centers/stores like Target and Walmart, people could more than just groceries; one stop shopping if you will. Many of these super centers also had (have) a pharmacy and an outdoor shop in addition to groceries. In my area, Meijer is very popular. But the stores that "just" had groceries were at a disadvantage. Further, it was difficult for them to invest in the expansion of their store and convert it into a super center. Kroger was able to do that, for example, but others could not. Just looking at the old photos, it is easy to see how difficult it would he to expand. But, like everything else, things change.

I agree. Also those chains, due to their size, are able to negotiate a much lower price for things than smaller and regional chains. So if your a customer with access to a Big Bear (where prices are higher) or a Walmart (where prices are lower), where do you go? Krogers, for example, has 2,720 grocery stores under their umbrella (both Krogers and under various brands, like Fry's, Fred Meyers, and Ralphs). How does a regional chain like Big Bear compete with that?

Smith's here in Las Vegas used to rush you through the checkout line as a means to keep you coming back because they knew people would pay more not to have to stand in the long lines at Walmart.

Rhett, I really enjoyed this video about grocery stores that are no longer around. I remember my late parents and myself shopping at A&P grocery store. It was in walking distance to where we lived. We also had a chain of grocery stores named Jumbo, but we rarely shopped there because it wasn't close to our home, we had to drive there. Great investigating, presentation, historical information, and photos, too. Have a fantastic weekend. Take care 🐎
