Beautifull tune indeed, but almost no one knows about the sad background of it. The lyrics of this song were written by a british captian of a ship that brought slaves from africa to america. In a big storm on the ocean when the ship was about to sink into the sea he feared for his life and began to pray and overthink what he was doing with this men on his ship which were sent to slavery. The result was this poem. His name was John Newton and he convinced William Wilberforce, a member of British Parliment to fight for the abolishment of slave trading.

Just had to have one more touch of His amazing Grace! When I can see, through my tears of gratitude, I look at the thought provoked expressions on the peoples faces, as they listen and reflect on their lives and the lyrics. The mans face at 0:08 and 2:35, speaks volumes. I have never told anyone this, in the 1930's, there was a genealogy done on our family. It was found that we were descendants of John Newton. As a child I was told I had been named after him. I've been honoured to carry his name as my middle and last name. Now aged and getting up in years, I still proudly and thankfully express my gratefulness to you for posting this video and thank you Maestro for this exquisite rendition.
