Hear me ramble on about my hatred for set design, and a whole bunch of praise for the chumblies!

Thanks for being nice to me :)
Divas, I implore you to pay no attention to the piece of glitter above my mouth
i was putting up the christmas tree at work, and you know how it is
sorry
I worked at a craft store years ago and constantly accidentally glitter bombed myself. Total respect â
Oh, I thought it was a bit of snot đ
In november?
You monster!
I wish most tv exectutives had as much passion and respect for an era that all rights you could judge for being having issues in production and attitudes ie sexist (but even then rarely).
What you've done to celebrate 60s Doctor Who is both professional and would make Hartnell and Troughton deeply humbled. Fandom is blessed to have you. Thank you.
I thought you were attempting to imitate The Master. No. Not THAT Master. The other one.
The fact that they animated a story as un-looked for as Galaxy 4 gives me hope that they will eventually animate all of the missing episodes.
Just saw this comment after watching Josh's new video
this aged like milk in a can
We can't hate Josh Snares for the sets when his hair is so fabulous. Critique of a waist coat is the cherry on top. Love these videos!
Secretly, everyone envied Senor Hair.
Lol his hair does look fabulous.
Who notices anything else?
IIRC this story is notable because it deals with bias based on appearances. The Doctor and crew have to side with the scary aliens for once, because the space Barbie doll hotties are really bad. I like when science fiction deals with problems like bias in this type of allegorical story.
I feel like this story should honestly be remade now.
Honestly, I don't think this story is really about judging by appearances. It seems like everyone gives this story credit for that, but in reality, that's not really the case.
The way everyone describes it- I thought this story would be The Doctor and co thinking the Dravhins (or however you spell it) were nice only to realize they were wrong and the Rills were the nice ones.
But that's not really the case- The Doctor, Steven, and Vicki are all suspicious of the Dravhins from the moment they meet them.
Still, I'm glad it's getting the good reception though:)
It is a bit interesting in hindsight due to what happened behind the scenes because of the Drahvins. Originally they were going to be all male, but Verity Lambert changed them all to women, without any alterations to the script besides obvious changes to the pronouns and (I assume) names, leading them to act like a cold, militaristic race instead of landing on tropes normally seen by a race comprised mostly of women. From what I know, something like this was rather rare back then. It's minor, but it's still pretty neat to think about.
They could literally make a flash animation and sell it on DVD and I'd buy it. I wouldn't be happy about it, but I'd buy it just because I have a primal urge to watch every episode and then have them all on my shelf in chronological order.
Fingers crossed more William Hartnell stories come. I need my historical fix!
Here's hoping by some miracle they do The Crusade so we can have a complete S2.
@@ender7278 fingers crossed đ€
Fingers crossed for The Daleks Master Plan and The Celestial Toymaker next year đ€
toymaker, maybe, masterplan, probably not. Do you understand just how big this is and how many of the episodes are missing? It and Marco Polo will probably never be done, though we in Australia really need to storm the ABC to see what they did with THEIR copy!
@@julieeverett7442 9 out of the 12 episodes are missing from The Daleks Master Plan. All 7 episodes from Evil of the Daleks were animated despite episode 2 still being in the archives. They could release The Daleks Master Plan, even if it means only one lot of animated reconstructions are released in a year or two.
They could do what they did with the early missing episode animations and the Web Of Fear special edition where they only animate a certain amount of episodes and keep the rest live action
@@julieeverett7442 they may as wellâve junked it
They should use Josh Snares amazing reanimated recons for Daleks Masterplan
"I'm not here to work." My favorite line. I say that too, since I retired.
I am just hoping they will do more William Hartnell stories if this does well.
God bless if they do The Myth Makers. I love The Myth Makers.
@@lastofthegrimelords thank god i'm not the only one
I'm just super happy that they're giving us *something*. I'm so close to having a full DVD collection, now...all I'm missing is the stuff they haven't animated (and FLUX, which isn't out yet...)
Thanks for the comprehensive review Josh, we're still waiting on Evil of the Daleks here in Canada so it may be some months before we get to see this one. Here's hoping they animate the two missing episodes of the Crusades. They did the same thing with the Moonbase so fingers crossed we get to see that one as well.
"I don't want to work. I'm not here to work. I'm here to hang out. I mean have a laugh." Biggest moods there.
I mean, the whole story line for Galaxy 4 was, in a nutshell, don't judge anyone by their looks. The Rill are kind of cute, and so are the Chumblies. Josh, don't worry about your set design. The sheet with the round things on it works fine. My copy of Evil of the Daleks arrived today, but Galaxy 4 isn't due out until next year, apparently, so I'll have to wait to see it. đ
I am thankful for your videos whenever they pop up, I'm okay with the erratic schedule when it comes to "Josh Snares" content! It's always worth the wait, what's not to love?
I'll be waiting until the Australian release to check out the animation for myself, but it's really refreshing to see mostly positive responses to it. I hope the animation team rolls onto the rest of Season 3. The more Hartnell, the happier I'll be!
i haven't seen the animation yet, but i'm not surprised that hartnell's movements weren't totally true to his performance. as a troughton fan, i've been bothered by the way they capture him too.
i always enjoyed this story for some reason lmao. mostly for the chumblies and the criminally under-used tardis team of vicki and steven
I always enjoy your critique as you are well versed in DW of the 60's so it was a fair assessment . I loved tbe dvd for what it was, and yes while it was a strange choice it is welcomed.
@josh don't be stressed or intimidated about uploading content - not every video has to have high production values: have faith in yourself as presenter... We just love to hear your Who thoughts, no matter what (within reason lol) those thoughts are on :-)
âUltimately itâs up to you to decide whether to buy itâ⊠oh please! My obsessive completionist drive will mean Iâll buy every story released, re-released as âspecial editionsâ and, re-re-released as special special editions.
Whatâs that? Theyâve released a blu-ray K-9 and Company? Sure, Iâll buy that too!
I am the same! đ
The BBC have got me HOOKED. It doesnât matter if I hate it, Iâll still buy it haha
Pretty hard to argue with your points. They're all fair and I felt the same way. That being said though, it was still quite marvellous and I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.
Yay! I was happy to see the Hartnell animations finally begin, and happy to hear your thoughts, which come from love. (Nice First Doctor pin you're wearing, too!)
That was nice at the end where you was saying you were thankful. I personally appreciate that.
All the Best
The Rill spaceship reminds me of some kind of futuristic supermarket for some reason.
Love you, keep the episodes coming! x
My god.
That _hair_ is amazingsauce.
Latter-day Capaldi even.
Here's My Top Picks For The Doctor Who Episodes That Should Get Animated
1. Marco Polo
2. The Daleks Master Plan
3. The Highlanders
4. The Wheel In Space
5. The Celestial Toymaker
6. The Underwater Menace
7. The Massacre Of St Bartholomew's Eve
8. The Smugglers
9. The Crusades
10.: The Myth Makers
Why isn't The Space Pirates on this list?
I think every Whovian wants The Daleks Master Plan. I'm on board with your list, except I'd put The Myth Makers higher.
@@OxbowisaMstie Sorry About It But I'm Giving An Honourable Mention I Forgot To Put It.
Yeah, I totally agree with the Rill ship, I actually prefer the sort of transparency that there was in the original. But hey, I will still pick it up I guess since it has a special place in my heart when it comes to the First Doctor stories âșïž
Even Sutekh needs cushions for his chair.
I should have listened to Sutekh :(
I wonder if they'll ever do a properly animated version of "Real Time", now that they have the means. Can you imagine the trouble they would have animating Colin Baker and his outfit..?
you nailed it with talking about the interior and the shadows.
Nice work as always Josh! appreciate your time and commitment!
I can't watch this video yet, but I will after I watch the bluray. Always happy to see Hartnell stories returned, one way or the other.
Always enjoy any Josh Snares video - this was fun :)
Always fun. Thanks for the video.
Josh Snares is the type of guy I'd want in my school presentation team. I love your video styles and how informative you are. Keep it up
Miss you! Made my morning
Love the backdrop, great content as always Josh!
Great video dude thanks for your thoughts on this animation
Such a nice young man.
Just watched this for the first time and I really enjoyed it. First time experiencing Galaxy 4 and I really enjoyed, much better than I expected!
Best ending to a video I've ever seen. Congrats Josh.
13:00 And there I was thinking "hey cool that's a pretty neat backdrop". Haha
Nice video. Awesome hair.
I don't have anything to add to what you said, I just wanted to say that I loved your video :) Hopefully this is the start of the Hartnell animated era.
Josh Snaresâ Hartnellfication grows sgdhdhf
Saving my steelbook for Christmas, but from what I've seen, I'm in complete agreement with you on this release. Not a bad attempt on their part, but could do better? Looking forward to it though. Nice to see you too Josh, as always. XX
Good to have you back, Josh
look mum, I made it into a Josh Snares CZcams video
đđđ
Very distracted by how awesome your hair looks, Josh.đ
Lovely review! Hoping to get the DVD for Xmas! Just watched the Evil one which I really enjoyed. (Also really enjoying the new series as well!) Nice to have a fully animated Hartnell at last! đ
Now that you mentioned the waistcoat height, I'll never unsee it.
Great video, as always!
Iâm sorry for bringing it up! đ
Great video, Josh. You make some good points. I prefer the animation here to Fury. The alien vistas are superb.
My gender is the way in which Josh says 'so'.
omg
"Marco". Bloody. "Polo".
Yes. This is Not one of the GREAT and or Classic Dr WHO Stories, but it will always have a Special Place in My WhoFanHeart due to this was one of the first Target Novels I got as a Kid way, Way back in the day. And I just Love Ian Marter's description and little additions to the story. I just can't hate it
Don't apologise about your background, hell, it's more accurate to 60s set design as opposed to the animations attempts
đđ
@@JoshSnares It's pretty funny but there were set backgrounds in _"The Aztecs"_ and a few other older stories that were just cloth backdrops. In Patrick Troughton's story _"The Seeds of Death"_ when they're leaving "The TARDIS" there's a wall where the roundels are just a flat wall with *a picture of the roundels* wallpapered onto it. I just thought the background you were using was kind of a throwback to those little background "tricks" they used on the show.
Wasn't Galaxy 4 written by a schoolteacher for children? If so, having the Rill's spaceship look like a bland kid's show set works perfectly.
Good story I hop it's going be on sale in nz soon.
I watched this as the recon available on the aztecs and honestly really enjoyed it. I'd probably like it a little less in its entirety đ but still glad that these animations happen to give a visual accompaniment to the full version
Being a HUGE Hartnell fan, I HAD to buy it...and personally, I thought it was brilliant!
We blumming love your videos wish you did 7 a week ha ! Top 3 Who CZcamsrs for us đ„łđâ€ïž
Happy to see my Concept Art WORK for GALAXY 4 getting RELEASED...HAPPY TO BE PART AS CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND CONCEPT ARTIST...LOVE U BBC...Happy to Be Part of this Historical Lost Episodes of DOCTOR WHOđ looking for Fans entertainmentđ
Great video
Richard Hurdall, David Bradley and William Hartnell all play the same first Doctor. And Ethan Peck who plays Spock in Strange New Worlds is playing the same Spock Leonard Nimoy play
We could also have a prequel series set between the TV movie and Night of the Doctor. We see the start of the Time War and the events Leading up to the war
You can have a prequel series set between the end of the classic series and the 1996 TV movie. You don't need to bring back Sylvester McCoy when a younger actor can play the Seventh Doctor
Yay, Love your vids.
It's kind of like the Star Wars special editions and the later movies in that franchise (prequals, Disney) or 2009 Star Trek and it's sequels. Complain about them all you want, but I really think the access to better special effects really helps improve what the original creators were trying to go for, but they didn't have the technology or the budget to make it the first time.
You are doing this just to depress those of us on the other side of the pond, right? Evil of the Daleks landed on my doormat today and you guys are 2 animations ahead of us! Seriously though, that was a thoughtful and balanced review, well done! One thing I noticed though was that in the shot after you said there were no shadows you showed a shot with the characters shadowless, but a shadow from the wall of the space ship. Having some things with shadows and not others is much worse than none at all.
Galaxy 4 is one of my favorite first doctor stories. It's really all about the chumblies.
We love the chumblies đ
Thank you for the video.
I actually really liked your background in this one, definitely no need to apologise there.
I'm kinda interested in the animation but being an American means I have to wait a couple of months for it plus we don't get it in Blu-Ray, we get it on DVD. You guys who live in UK and Aus are lucky.
Normally yes, however Galaxy 4 is slated to have a Blu-ray release for Northern America and would be the first animation to get on here. No date yet as of this writing but hopefully something within the next few months. So weâll have that to look forward to.....but Iâll probably still get the dvd lol
It's animated.. why would you need blu ray for that.
@@The.Master71-73
âŠbecause then it would be in HD?
@@spookylemon4947 lol it's not recorded on film. It's animation made on computer. It's gonna be the same quality if it's a DVD or Blu ray. Really depends on the quality of your TV. Animation released as blu ray is just a marketing strategy to make more money off the same product đđ
@@The.Master71-73
The animation will have been rendered either in 1080p or 2K. A DVD is 480i (or 576i in PAL territories) whereas a Blu-ray is 1080p. So the Blu-ray will show an improvement. Whether that an improvement is worth it is individual opinion, and subjective. But the Blu-ray will objectively look better.
Almost any TV made is the last 10+ will be HD (if not 4K now) and will show the improvement in resolution. Even on a phone sized screen you can tell the difference between SD and HD
Oof, your little 'rant' at the end is super relatable. Hits me right in the walking stick.
I'm glad I watched this before buying it. I've read the Target novelisation of it and wasn't that gripped by it, so I might wait for it to come down in price before buying it. Fingers crossed for The Daleks' Master Plan next đ€.
Wait you predicted that this would be animated
I am psychic
Loving your content and sometimes less is better as you can focus and research deeper into the many Dr Who stories and theories :D
Why don't they get real and ask you for your input before they start? They ought to have super fans on board.
Its interestnig this story, I will still add it to my collection, still got evil of the daleks to watch
here's hoping BBC Studios animated Dalek Masterplan, boi that is the final Dalek story to be done... and then all Classic Dalek stories are done from start to finished.
Masterplan is going to be a monster to animate THIRTEEN episodes with only about three available, what footage are they going to use? Are their pictures or script notes to go off of? And its 5.5 hours long completed, if we get it well have to watch over several days!! Though I think I'd like to see the very first christmas episode!!
Did I just see... light theme on your CZcams? đ±đ€Ż
I am a Light Theme person, I know. Iâm sorry.
@@JoshSnares Keep this on the down low, but...
Me too đŹ
I finally watched the animation yesterday (I'd seen the trailer, the cover and your review but that was it) and actually really enjoyed it. However, I didn't have the same issue with the colours as I accidentally watched the black and white version as that was on disc 1. It may say somewhere on the cover which version is on which disc but I couldn't find it. In the past, I've not really understood why they included both the colour and black and white animations as if someone wanted to watch it in black and white they could simply turn the colour settings down on their TV. But having now watched one in black and white, I've found out that they are also in 4:3 whereas the colour versions are in 16:9, and so it does make them feel more like the original episodes, giving them more of a 60s TV feel. I like that upon selecting "Play All", you get the option of watching it with the original episode 3 or watching all 4 animations. That was a nice touch and something that would probably be rather jarring if you were going from full colour and widescreen back to black and white 4:3. Having watched it in black and white, I actually thought the redesigned ship looked a lot better than the wobbly cellophane triangles, but looking at it in colour...yeah I don't think that works. Maybe if they'd kept the colours within the ship greyscale, it might have worked better. Otherwise the colour version does look a bit like a school room with all the furniture removed, with all the distracting bright colour to try and take away from the misery that is going to school.
In regards to the story itself, I liked it a lot. It is a bit slow and could have been edited down, but it has a nice message which is essentially about racism which is just as topical now as it was then. I found it interesting that the Rills had a sort of Indian sounding accent and even more appropriate was that the main baddie was called MAGA...err....Maaga (did the Doctor Who production team predict the rise of Trump?...well they say The Simpsons did so why not Doctor Who?), watching it now with that context just made it work all the more for me. Obviously this was not intentional, but the message was still there, the idea that people tend to automatically trust those who look like them rather than those who are different. It's a sci-fi trope that has been done so many times, but it's still an important message and I think they did it very well here.
Character design...it worked. Vicki and Steven looked like Vickie and Steven. I think the original Chumblies looked a bit better but I still think they did a good enough job of replicating them. I also like the way they animated them as it sort of reminded me of something out of Yellow Submarine, especially with those sound effects. I'm not sure why they made The Doctor look like a frail old, WWE Undertaker with one of those pine tree air fresheners around his neck, but the movements and mannerisms made it work.
Awesome đ€©
The Savages would be a great story to do.
Talk about anything. we'll come back!
4:49 Ooo, Slay Steven
Great to see you upload
Looking at that version of Hartnell, he kinda looks like if the WWE's Undertaker stopped dying his hair and had it trimmed back to shoulder length. Not as muscular or tattooed obviously, but that's the vibe I'm getting from the shape of the head and face.
omg đ
The front cover of Galaxy 4 has an insanely accurate first doctor even the costume is right but the animation looks so different
I'm always up for animated Hartnell stories. I'm not too familiar with this tale but I'll be patiently waiting for "The Daleks Mater Plan" and "The Celestial Toymaker" to get animated some day.
I'm planning to get it for Christmas. I think it'll be nice to it, but whether it's going to be an animated story I'll be watching over and over, probably not
Knowing how much of a Hartnell fan you are I was hoping you were going to like this release. I'm pleased to see that, reservations aside, you did. The main man could do with a few tweaks (Hartnell, not you!) but it looks as though it will succeed in allowing Galaxy 4 to find a fresh audience.
Always love your videos, Josh. I can't totally agree with you on this one, as I LOVE "Galaxy 4". I haven't even seen the animation yet (still waiting on my pre-order to arrive) but I disagree about the Rills' ship. From what I've seen, it looks fine. They went with something simple. That's okay by me. I understand "Galaxy 4" is not your cup of tea, but I love the story. Yes, it's simple. But it's very good overall. This one makes perfect sense to have been animated now. Would I have preferred them to do a different Hartnell? Yes, of course. "Marco Polo", "The Savages", "The Smugglers"... oh yes. But this works for me at this time. Love it. Can't wait to see it. And I love your hair and that fabulous shirt you were wearing in this video!
I get it, setting up backdrops is by far my least favourite part of setting up a shot.
So hereâs how i see it effectively to make 100% accurate it would cost a lot and yes Iâm some cases the sets do look cheep however in the long run we get another missing story to add to our shelves woth the rest of whatâs left of season 3 so I see it as not as good as fury from the deep but at the same time it could have been worse
Good review. I feel we are almost the same page, just we disagree about the conclusion. I think it's a very bland story but the set and animation is SO strong that it makes me forget how little there is to work with. Like this is one of my top 10 Hartnells and this animation is why. But I totally get your view and it made me think about my own view
"Mum! LIFE is in the details!" "Well you've lost me there, sweetie."
A very accurate review. I have to agree with the fact itâs a slow story in whole and not much happens at all. The one thing that interested me most about the story was the follow on to the mission to the unknown. I would love to see that animated but itâs not ideal for a singular release, I would say it would have to be released in a boxset alongside the Daleks master plan, I donât think there is much chance of seeing that animated any time soon but hopefully itâs in discussion
Well done Josh. For someone who watched this live, it's a masterpiece
Your TARDIS has hit a... wrinkle... in time? Definitely picking up Galaxy 4. Looks fun.
Josh + Rills = still a better love story than Twilight
