  • Marek Larwood goes on the Yar River Trail, on the Isle of Wight. He does it in reverse, starting the route at the mouth at St. Helens Duver, then through Bembridge, Brading, Adgestone, Alverstone, Godshill, Whitweli and finally to its source in Niton.

    That A-Level came from Sandown High so is invalidated by default! Being a local, as soon as I saw the Eastern Yar I had my head in my hands! Have cycled past that source many times and never seen running water! But you saw Adgestone's Mystery Machine and an Adder's back end - that's exciting for Isle Of Wight standards! All the best for the South Downs Way!

      Yes. The wildlife was incredible on the walk. Thanks for giving me the idea and giving the walk some mild purpose. Camping is awful.

    Hi Marek, here as railway nerd, the Beeching reports that lead to the infamous lose of railway services were in 1963 & 1965 so the only railway closure on the island that can actually be blamed on Beeching was the closure of the Island Line between Shanklin and Ventnor including Wroxall (closed 1966). Most of the lines on the island were closed during the 1950s, most of which Dr Beeching spent in Canada working for ICI

    Just looking at these old walks and glad you ended up at Niton, village of my birth. Interestingly the Yar runs underneath the pavement from Laceys Lane to the shop, under the road then under the pavement again with a few tantalizing glimpses at cottage gates. My Mother said as a child there was a dare to follow the spring under the road/pavement, scary.
    It is also said that there was a secret passage from the church I think down to Castle Haven beach via the Buddle Inn pub renown for smuggling.

    Hi Marek,
    I did enjoy this vid which has given me an idea for a walk when my pals and I get to the IoW (if we ever get to the IoW). We should have been there for a week in May this year but now hope to be there next year - Coronavirus permitting.
    The South Downs Way can be every bit as boring as the Yar River Trail and the route can be rather uneven and very muddy. When we did it a few years ago we rigged it to use B&Bs so didn't need to carry tents and stuff - personally I hope never to camp ever again! Anything less than four stars is roughing it for me!
    Best wishes from Bristol.

    • @cdwc
      @cdwc  Před 3 lety

      Luckily it wasn't too muddy. I know what you mean about camping. I thought the South Downs was a little underwhelming considering all the fuss that's made about it.
