It sucks having to move into college like this. Like when I moved in, you have a roommate or two, the whole family helps you move in, you don't ever feel lonely, and floor mates and then when you move in you usually just end up meeting everyone on the floor and you kind of forget about being on your own now and being away from home. Plus I got over my homesickness by the time I was a high school freshman having spent several summers at various camps. The first year I got homesick after that I was ok. I guess the main thing that helps is just to keep yourself busy.

trust me, jasmine, it will be better. I study in a boarding school in the US more than two thousand miles away from home and yes sometimes I just want to be back home. but my school has become home and I'm reduced to tears almost every day because I can only see my school community come to life behind a computer screen and stories on Instagram. being surrounded by so many amazing people and teachers 24/7 really brought out the best in me that my current home has never been able to. ucla will be home to you sooner or later and it will be better. I wish you the best of luck ♡

@Olivia everyone follows basically the same structure: wake up sometime before classes, some of us head to the dining hall for breakfast, first class/block of the day, then classes and lunch blocks. after school, we head to our afterschool activity (required by the school) and then we're "free" for the day, meaning we can spend our time however we want. we would of course head over to the dining hall for dinner sometime before it closes, and then we can stay in our dorm rooms or common rooms or the library to work and study. the buildings aren't big at all compared to university campuses but yes, we have separate buildings for each subject area (humanities, sciences, math). I don't find it strict at all, if anything I like the structure the school "makes" us follow. being surrounded by people who are all so smart and hardworking really prevents you from slacking off too!

Although I'm an old lady now lol I remember that feeling after unpacking everything in my dorm and my family had left for the evening. My roommate was gone and the two girls across the hall were gone for the weekend and I just felt so alone. At least you were far enough away from your family to have that feeling. I was literally 3 mi from my house 🙄😒. I would call my mom for anything the first week I lived in the dorms. she actually had to tell me that I didn't need her permission to do anything 😂🤣. Don't worry, soon you'll be accustomed to the feeling and it won't feel so lonely but rather it will start to feel freeing. As many of the comments are saying, we're all here for you and super proud of you.💕💞

Jasmine - I can totally relate! I went to USC and I remember feeling completely isolated even though there were so many students and humans around me. The first time I absolutely broke down was when I got sick at college for the first time and realized there was nobody there to take care of me. But it’s all in the discomfort of growing and becoming independent. You got this 🥰🥰🥰

  • @Isabel-zd4ep

Honestly your feeling are entirely valid. When I was ‘dropped off’ at college that first day I was so distracted with moving stuff around that I didn’t really let myself cope with anything until like midnight when I took a shower and broke down for a bit. My roommates both had friend groups they knew of and were out of the room at the time. Once classes started and club groups form up though you end up meeting people and start being more comfortable.

    Hey Jasmine!
I understand so well that you're feeling homesick. I spent half a year in Canada this year and I'm only 16 and that was the first time I had been away from home for such a long time without my family. I felt lost and soo homesick during quarantine , but it got better as soon as I started going outside and I could meet my friends again.
I promise, it will be fine. Make sure u take care of yourself, and it will get better and you will feel even better when you can also look forward to the next time you back to the bay area to visit your family.
Hope you're still having a great college experience so far!
    Love from Germany,
    Catie. ☺️💞
P.S.: if ur room doesn't fell like home yet, make sure u bring a lot of familiar things from home, such as photos, room decor and other things u had hung up in your old room. That will make it feel so much more like your home!

I felt that. My first year moving in to a dorm was scary. I didn't know anyone and I was sad to leave my family. I had to move myself in so driving all the way to my university felt like the longest drive ever. I cried while driving for some of the way. I had a 4+ hour drive alone accompanied with music. I am such a homebody so this was a huge change, but I wanted to get outside of my comfort zone and meet new people! It gets a lot better. Hey Jasmine, I have had these moments for a while when it comes to moving in and such. When we live at home for so long we get so used to the routine. Then when that changes and we have to adjust to a new life routine it can be really difficult. It is always bittersweet to move into college. For me every year it so far it has gotten better and I didn’t cry this year. To be fair I moved on slowly and tried to take it easy on myself. It is even harder to move in like you said during the pandemic and it hasn’t been easy on any of us. But I want you to know it will get better. It sounds like such an easy thing to say but it truly will, we will get through this!

It was a 4-4.5 hour drive from my home to my new room (I stayed in a house and rented a room from an older lady). The introduction week wasn't going to start for a couple of days, and I lived a 30 min. busride away from all the action(bus did not go anymore in the evening hours either). I also felt so incredibly lonely those first few days, I called my dad pretty much everyday at first. Gradually I got used to the uni life (and after a year got a better room in town as well!) and things turned out alright :). It's a shock at first but you can get through it! I believe in you 💚.

I cried when I said goodbye to my parents and I cried even more when I went up to my dorm room by myself....I was very excited the day before driving to uni, but the last day I was with my parents made me realize that adulthood can def be lonely and scary. And while things have improved since my time here, I still miss my home and furbabies terribly :,)

I was in this dorm building last year! If you're looking for more space, we moved the double bed sideways against the wall/window, and stacked the two dressers in between the beds. Then on the other wall we had two desks and enough space to put our fridge and still open the bathroom door most of the way. Might not feel like much, but adds a lot of space to the room and if you're stuck inside can make it a bit more bearable :)

Just the heaviness that was in your voice reminded me of my first time being alone for a couple days. I’m a junior in high school and because of that I’ve been thinking about college a lot more lately. I come from a pretty strict household so my parents have told me that because I’m a girl I can’t dorm unless it’s a prestigious college. Typical teenager thing but the more they remind me, the more I want to dorm so that I can be “independent” and “get the real college experience.” After watching this video though I realized that if I were to leave, even if it was my dream university, I don’t know how long it would be until I would stop feeling sad and missing my family. The first day I would also be bawling like crazy.

Hey! I totally understand the homesickness you felt, and I go to a school that's an hour away from my home. I'm also a freshman in college, so this is the first time I'd actually been away from home after 18 years. It will get better, and once things get rolling and comfortable, you'll actually have a lot of fun. I was just lucky my roommate is someone I already know and am friends with. You can get through this year! I believe in you!

It must be scary moving to a new place, but take time to accept those feelings, connect with friends and family when you need to, and don't let that fear or discomfort overtake you, they're all opportunities to grow! Good luck girl, you got this!

Fortunally for me I can stay home for some weeks (because I'm in the risk groups) and so I can stay with my family but I just feel so alone anyway. I dont see any of my friends for 6 months and I'm just going out there alone and eventually I'll leave my parents alone here too.. I just feel so sad about it as well. I can completely relate to that feeling of loneliness and emptiness. I couldn't leave my phone the first day I stayed in my dorm cause I didn't want to feel the vacuum space I was sitting in. It was very hard the first month because I didn't have roommate. I thought I would like it more if I didn't have one but turns out I loved it when I had a roommate. I know Covid has taken some of those comforts away from us like gathering with people, but I hope we can go through it together and pray that it gets better. Hope you're doing well now gurl !!! and Congrats on getting into UCLA !

Oh Jasmine, I don’t know how to comfort you, omg. I remember the first time I went to university in the UK, and I cried a bit when I slept on my first night at my dorm. I’m an international student too, and it was quite hard for me to cope with the weather, the atmosphere, friends, culture...basically everything.
I think the best thing you can do is talk to your loved ones and keep in touch as much as possible. Sometimes my mom would just video call me while she worked around home and did a lot of small talk, I remember feeling much less lonely that way. Something like that, anything that floats your boat.
Like with everything else, it’ll turn out fine. (It did for me, thankfully.) Don’t worry, and enjoy the present. :)
P.S this is for anyone and everyone struggling to cope up with moving into uni. I wish you the best, and have a lovely day! 😄

I am so very much older than you and college was a long time ago. However, I remember that lonely feeling and realizing that a whole lot of life was about to be very different. It is scary, sad, isolating and most importantly...... temporary.
These feelings will come and go with a lot of weird things that happen in a lifetime. You are creative, resilient and focused and again most importantly thoughtful. I don't mean that in the kind and thinking of others way (although I am sure you are) but in the looking at life experiences and really thinking about them.
Which means the next time hard emotions happen you will be better at dealing with them and putting them in context of the time you are in and experiences you are having. So you will just keep getting better and better at it. You are doing spectacularly well. So, I am so sorry it is hard and I am honestly sad that you're sad. I so excited for all the things you will discover.
You are amazing. You totally got this. You are doing great.

Awhhh baby girl, this experience is going to allow you to grow as an individual. It makes you realize how far you’ve come and the amount of hours and sleepless nights you put into to get to this point. It’s hard to come to realize like, wow, I’m an adult, I can go after what and who I want to be, you have the ability to make your own choices and learn from them in your own way and learn how to get through things in your own way without having your parents’ two sense right in your ear. Although whenever a situation happens when you really have to think about what is best for you and what the best choice could possibly be, you will have all those talks with your parents pop into your head and now this is the time to put everything they taught you into play. You’re going to do great and I have high hopes for you. I’ve been watching your videos for some time and you are one intelligent and creative young woman!! Keep at it beautiful and dream big in all you do! ❤️💯☺️

I completely understand how you felt lonely after move-in! I went through the same feeling after my parents left after helping me move in and I cried. But it will get better pretty fast as you familiarize yourself with the campus, make friends, and start classes. Also, I don’t know if mini fridges are supposed to be used with extension cords. At least mine says not to in the instruction book. I’d recommend you double check before using one or just move the fridge somewhere it can be directly plugged in to a wall outlet. Love your videos! ❤

I commuted from home to university so I never took any responsibility like an adult until I started working. I only started working this month. I am very far away from home and it's so hard being an adult. I wish I stayed in a dorm or something away from home in uni so that I got experience.
