Mario is Faster than you Think

- How fast is Mario in Super Mario Odyssey? Is there a limit to how fast he can go? How are we able to abuse and manipulate the game to make him go faster. Here we explore exactly that, seeing what exactly we can do to make Mario move as fast as possible.
Important Note:
Because I used average speed to calculate the speeds of the different methods in the video, some things may have much higher top speeds then the speed I mention in the video. A good example of this is likely the assist bubble, as I timed from the first frame Mario appears in the bubble to the frame Mario pops, leaving some time at the start and end where Mario isn't moving much. I timed it this way because the player doesn't have control over Mario during the Assist bubble, so to me it made since to include it in the travel time, as it's a drawback of using the assist bubble to get from one point to another.

Here's a glitch that I did on accident, the letter glitch. You know how you go out of bounds with the letter to do the infinite jump rope thing. Well I did it kind of weird, when the letter went out of bounds it shot me across the map and I died. I went through buildings and went to the world border

80,000,000m/s is 80,000km/s that equals to 288,000,000km/h
But lets focus on the 80,000km/s
The earth has a circumference of aprox. 40,000km.
That means mario can travel 2 times around the earth in just a second.
And now, the distance between earth and moon is aprox. 384,400km, so... mario could travel from earth to the moon in 4.8 seconds. (If you have seen Onepunchman, u should remember saitama jumped from the moon to the earth in 19 secs, that means, mario can travel 4 times faster than that jump)
And for last, the distance between earth and mars is aprox 54,600,000km. So, mario could travel from earth to mars in 11 minutes.

2:34 every second you're not running, Mario is only getting closer.
in the instant that Mario leaves the cannon he goes at around 125.5 mph. this was from the xyz velocity given by the mod, and I then converted it based on the speed he was going during your first test, assuming that Mario's running speed is constant and you followed a roughly straight path in metro kingdom I got a conversion factor of 16 whatever units of speed were used is equal to 8.2 m/s so you can multiply the speed the game gives by 0.5125 and you get the speed in m/s. the first frame that he leaves the cannon the magnitude of his velocity is 109.5, and converting to m/s we get a top speed of around 56.14 m/s or 125.59 mph. Of course this is the top speed and he immediately slows down, but for a little bit Mario is faster than the bullet bill.
Really interesting, even though my little brain missed half of it lol. But thanks for doing the math!
6:30 For the warps, do you think that Mario actually travels that distance in that amount of time, or do you think that it just cuts out the traveling and skips to when Mario arrives at the warp? Because the screen does go white and loads in the are that you warped to. Other methods of traveling so far in this video dont require loads like that. So we can physically see Mario move the entire distance. With the warp, we only see cappy move a short distance before the screen cuts out and skips to Mario arriving to the warp. There’s no way to confirm that he actually travels that full distance within the load time. Hence why all warps are the same length. Like warping to a warp you are standing right next to takes the same amount of loading time at warping across a kingdom.
My thought too. If you assume that travel is in real time and loads aren't cut out, then warping between a moon kingdom and an earth kingdom would be extremely fast. For reference, it takes light 1.3 seconds to travel between them. Mario's speed would be based on the load time.
Yes but in lore he doesnt teleport instead cappy flies the distance so i guess it counts but anyway it isnt the fastest you can go anyway so doesnt really matter much
@@toastWs That's not what the person was saying. They were saying that while Cappy flew there it probably cut the travel. That's it

i actually appreciate the m/s because i have very little mental ability to conceptualize mph or km/h, but '6m in a single second' is much more easy to visualize. i see where people are upset and can see why km would have been helpful but imo the distance per second was really nice to have too. (perhaps next time have all 3?)
super fascinating video, nicely done!

damn, cool it helped you, but not having the km/h rendered all of that speed useless to me as I can't convert m/s nor m/h on the fly. So I'm definitively in favor of all 3 units displayed for any futur video, so everyone can understand, you, me, and those weird americans too !

CRCs, or happy return cancels can make you go massive distances almost instantly, they're pretty hard but they can go the whole map if a setup is found, which one has been found for all the wires in bowsers kingdom for the min cap run. You should try that out

Unfortunately I don't have the right tools to make a video like that nor do I have two Switches to set up balloons at specific heights to calculate the various jumps.
Could these new tools that you used easily calculate mario's various jumps and how high they go?

I did some rough calculations on the lava bubble speed:
If the vertical velocity is 72 mph and without being given the max height reached, I do have to make an assumption: assuming the max height reached forms a 30 degree angle with the cannon, the max height reached is 12*root(3). With this information and knowing that the initial and final velocity will be equal in magnitude but opposite y components, I can use the SUVAT equations to determine that the initial velocity purely in the y direction is equal to 12*root(3) as well.
Knowing the initial vertical velocity allows me to then simply do some trigonometry to find that the two velocity vectors combined achieve a total initial velocity of 74.9 mph.
Again, this is assuming that the max height at the middle of the trajectory forms a 30 degree angle with the location of the cannon and the top of the lava, but this assumption seems reasonable to form estimates with.
11:34 Wait, that seems to be twice as much as it actually is. Gravity is -3 out of the assist mode bubble, so it rounds to -4 where floats are 4 apart but to 0 when floats are 8 apart, which is at 2**26 speed, or 40,265,318.4 m/s, or 13.4% of c.
After 18,175,317 frames (84 hours), you'll finally have reached the maximum speed and will have fallen 595,705,320,177,664cm or 40 astronomical units (taking float rounding into account on every frame). It'll take another 7,900,515 frames (37 hours) to reach the maximum *distance* of 2**50 units or 75 au, and it's not a coincidence that these are less than a factor of 10 away from each other.
Build up speed for 84 hours on stream. You know you want to.
I’m just gonna pretend I know what this says
This is correct, we doubled the speed in calculations by accident.
Also, the further you fall, the laggier the game becomes (probably due to the ever-increasing area needed to check for collision between each frame) so it'll take much longer to reach the maximum speed. After only 24 hours of falling my game was running at 10fps.
that was the coolest thing ever,i never realised how fast mario is
Mario going so fast he's experiencing time dilation
Awesome video, interesting stuff!
The best way to convert vertical speed into horizontal speed is, as everyone knows, by using portals. 🤷♂️
FLIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING
Can you not teleport back to a warp point once you've fall glitched an inconceivably long distance? Since it'd take about the same amount of time to load in, but you'd have "travelled" that whole distance back to the map in that shorter time?
you can't teleport when you're falling. I mean if you could mario could probably travel at like 8 trillion mph. like it would be crazy
Also if you are calling then you can’t cheat and just warp
I think you might be able to go very fast by abusing suckage. Just like in min caps, in NDC

I know, but player velocity gets a little weird in some of the things I tested and I figured it'd be better to have a consistent timing method for everything I showed in the video. As an example if you go to 5:09 Player Vel and Player Speed are both 0 when Mario is in the electrical wire capture.

A glitch that gives Mario a lot of horizontal momentum is the forward long jump. Inside of Pauline's skyscraper (Band Room) suckage is applied and this room is very far from New Donk city. Yes this room isn't a sub area. Now you can long jump near a fence and if you get lucky you'll get Mario to clip out of the room and launch back to New Donk city.

If you calculate the distance traveled after using a cannon as a lava bubble by using the equation for a semi circle it would equate to going approximately 113 mph actually making faster than the bonsai bill and being the second faster capture overall (this all assuming the arc of the cannon is roughly a perfect circle)

Would the assist bubble be faster if you did the thing in the city hall in metro where you assist bubble under into the city hall in the same map as the main place?
I think there is another glitch that can get over the endless falling bubble glitch. In Metro Kingdom, in the auditorium, in the corner, you long jump and land in just the right spot to go incredibly fast. I only think it works on the first version of the game though. Another glitch a pan be found, if you use the same letter out of bounds glitch, again, in Metro, you can clip into a taxi, then go back into the letter, and go super fast. Again, I only think this works on the first version of the game.
I didn't expect the BLJ to finally meet its match.

Hi Fir thanks for showing both metric systems, but the conversion would work better for metric people if you show km/h.
What about the backwards long jump?
Came here because I thought Fir would play a mod in Odyssey that speeds Mario up.
I am not disappointed tho. This video is way more interesting.
About the float rounding thing, I wanted to see if that was actually the case. Going frame by frame (in a 30FPS clip), it seemed like Mario was gaining 3 units of negative vertical speed each frame (6 every 2 frames, and since Mario Odyssey runs at 60FPS, that comes out to 3 every frame). As Mario's speed value is a float, it is of course subjected to float rounding. We would need to reach a point where the float coarseness ends up making each consecutive float 8 apart. From my understanding of floats, that would occur at 67,108,864, meaning that the true speed cap would be only 67,108.864 m/s, or about 150,118.25 mph. Unless of course, it's a double-precision float (or "double" for short), which I'm not sure what it would be for that.
There was an error in the calculation (thinking it was 6u/f instead of 3u/f) so we thought it was 80 million m/s, but it's actually 40 million. You're correct that it would happen at 67,108,864 u/f but remember that one unit is 1cm and one frame is 1/60 of a second, so 67,108,864 u/f is 40 million m/s
4:17 The calculus arc length formula could help with this.
Would be nice If you would also use the metric system for your viewers of other countries, so that we also understand and don't have to calculate. No offense, still loved ur video 💪🏼
If you can fall infinitly and warping has a set time it takes can't you fall for a day or 2 or even a month then warp. Could that be faster?
