  • In today’s video I share Sage's completed Montessori inspired toddler bedroom tour. I was so excited to share what her big girl room finally looks like, and how proud of this space I am. She is so happy to be in this room and it's been the perfect space to wind down and recharge.

I also had the same fear when we converted our toddler's crib into a toddler bed. I worried she was going to escape and just run around. To our surprise, she never even leave the room when it's bed time. She was so excited that she could climb into the bed by herself. She looked really proud. We are glad we did it =)

    Loved this
I thought it was interesting that her bedroom is specifically not for toys because we started out that way with our son, and moved to a new house when he was 2, and the circumstances with that house completely flip flopped the toys. Most of his toys would be in his room and at that age he really started to love waking up and playing by himself and choosing when he was ready to come out and start socializing for the day. It was an unexpected outcome of that move.
And 2 years and 2 moves later, we now own a house and his bedroom is much smaller again, do now he has a few bedroom toys but most have a bookshelf in the living room. And watching this just reminded me of how at first his bedroom really just was for sleeping because I'd forgotten, and realizing how much things have changed over just 2 years!
We helped him understand toys aren't for bedtime by having him put them in the toy bin himself, then "tucking them into bed" by covering the toy bin with a blanket and really focusing on when the moon is out you and your toys need sleep to have a good time playing tomorrow and feel good. So they toys stay in bed until the sun comes up.
It's worked well. He also still uses his own discretion on how much alone time he wants in the morning before he comes out, and that's been really cool to witness over time
It's always so fun to see how other people do this parenting job, because it's simultaneously so personal but so universally relatable

Something I learned when I cloth diapered, is that poop is supposed to go in the toilet for cloth or disposable diapers. I never read the box when I was doing disposable. They do say to drop the poop in the toilet before throwing out diapers.
We used our crib until my son was 3. I saw no rush to get him out of a crib either. My son still uses his sleep sack at 3. We made him give up all of the other "baby" things, but he still love his sleep sack.

Does it bother you that her playroom takes up that entire room next to your kitchen? Aesthetically, I feel like that room would be so beautiful as a sitting area or living room, especially since it's one of the main rooms you walk into. I've always preferred my son's toys to be tucked away, in a separate room, mostly because I don't want my house to scream "children" when people walk in, but that's just me. I love the idea of keeping only her books & quiet things in her room.

Please don’t feel like you have done something wrong because your toddler is waking throughout the night: usually when you hear someone from Canada and the US say that their child has been sleeping through the night since 4 or 6 months, it means they have done sleep training. In Canada where she lives (and where I live too), sleep training in the norm and most families do it, so if you’re not from here and haven’t been exposed to sleep training culture, you may think that a toddler sleeping 12 hours is luck, but it’s not. No judgment against parents who sleep train, but as a whole narrative it’s pushed SO MUCH here and it’s based on a lot of fear mongering, that it doesn’t allow parents to make informed choices whether to sleep train or not, and makes parents who choose not to sleep train feel like they are always doing something wrong. I chose not to sleep train and I get judged by parents who have. I don’t even start conversations about baby sleep but they do and they always make comments about the choices I made, even when it works for my family and my son sleeps well. In your case, it would be near impossible to sleep train a toddler of your child’s age, but you will find a lot of resources that can help without training. Check the accounts of hey sleep baby, resting in motherhood & kaitlin klimmer.

@@g.gemill i really appreciate hearing this bc it’s very easy to put the fault on yourself or esp have your spouse blame you for the night wakings. i tried the Baby Sleep Trainer and she was so great but ultimately sleep training just wasnt for me and ill have to suck it up. we are still nursing and i think the night feedings are also adding to the wakings.
