- The Lakes of Pontchartrain - Lyrics
'Twas on one bright March morning I bid New Orleans adieu
And I took the road to Jackson town, me fortune to renew
I cursed all foreign money, no credit could I gain
Which filled me heart with longing for the lakes of Pontchartrain
Well I stepped on board of a railroad car beneath the morning sun
I rode the rods 'til evening and I laid me down again
All strangers there, no friends to me, 'til a dark girl towards me came
And I fell in love with a Creole girl by the lakes of Pontchartrain
Well I said, "My pretty Creole girl, me money here's no good
And if it weren't for the alligators, I'd sleep out in the wood"
"You're welcome here, kind stranger, our house, it's very plain
But we never turn a stranger out from the banks of Pontchartrain"
Well she took me into her mammy's house and she treated me right well
The hair upon her shoulders in jet-black ringlets fell
To try to paint her beauty, I'm sure 'twould be in vain
So handsome was my Creole girl by the lakes of Pontchartrain
Well I asked her if she'd marry me, she'd said this could never be
For she had got a lover, and he was far at sea
She said that she would wait for him and true she would remain
'Til he'd returned to his Creole girl by the lakes of Pontchartrain
So fare thee well, me bonny own girl, I'll never may see you more
But I'll ne'er forget your kindness in the cottage by the shore
And at each social gathering a flowing glass I'll drain
And I'll drink a health to me Creole girl by the lakes of Pontchartrain
From BBC's Folk Hibernia - 2007 - Hudba
Was roofing in Oregon in the mid-80s when the album version of this tune came over the local radio. I almost killed myself flying down the ladder to call the station and find at who/what it was. Went that afternoon to the record shop and the owner ordered "Welcome here kind stranger" for me and the LP came a few weeks later. That was 36 years ago!! The whole album is amazing and I still have it.... but this song is the standout. Thank you Mr. Brady for sharing your otherworldly artistry, it has meant alot to me.
I am glad you made it safely down the ladder :-)
Yours was the proper response to this tune and his singing.
September 1986, in Dublin, on our Honeymoon, we were walking along a pedestrian mall when we heard Paul’s song “The Island” from outdoor speakers attached to a record store. We went right in and bought it, and have been Brady fans ever since. Our 38th Anniversary this year, and Paul’s voice still resonates for us of those glory days.
A talented man in touch with his soul..........................................................to capture the essence of a song is not easy to do but Paul does it seemingly with ease. I don't think they know who wrote these words but they think it was during the American civil war where I can only imagine pain, misery, confusion and conflicting emotions were everyday occurrences. I can almost feel this man's weary soul crying out for the gentle human touch of love and kindness in a mad depressing world. Of course we can only imagine and it will likely be far far away from the actual misery he and thousands endured.
I remember singing this in a pub in Belfast and everyone just went silent
The words are beautifully written but the way its sang that irish vibe its beautiful i used loved singing it ❤❤
This is like magic. Such raw talent 😊
"to try to paint her beauty would only be in vain" - miss my princess like crazy.
Thank you Paul!! ❤
Un saludo desde Bilbao, en el País Vasco,
Paul Brady’s voice has improved with age. Just brilliant
He now has the age to play this song as it should be done, in a hauntingly nostalgic way. Absolute magic
Amazing vibrato in his voice, suits the style so well. Traditional songs are the best, as they picture the sad definitive farewells people had to face in life. Sometimes music is so beautiful, that it hurts.
Exactly 🍀
Some people write the songs, and nobody can do it better. Some people do the songs better than anyone else can. This may not be his song, but I haven't heard anyone yet who can do it better than he does.
Open D on a Lowden with Brady singing. Heavenly.
God bless my daddy's soul!!! My father talked about these waters often... 💔
Even his Bobness Mr. Bob Dylan visited Paul to ask him how play guitar on this very special song. Bravo Paul!
Just magnificent guitar playing and emotive singing. Classic stuff
Paul, you gave me comfort 40 yesrs ago, and you still do. Thank you.
His Guitar playing on this is brilliant....
I heard this in a pub in Galway once. I haven’t been able to get it out of my head ever since.
Have another listen
Was it in Monroe's Tavern?
Blown away when I first heard this, still gives me shivers. Simply stunning
It gives me goose bumps. It is a haunting song and so wonderfully sung by Paul Brady. I've got a few of his albums and every now and then I delve into one, like today at lunchtime, wonderful. He makes me proud of my Irish heritage.
I'm an Australian acoustic musician I play guitar mandolin and piano

Love this song, and often tune into Paul Brady singing it.....and always think of back in Ireland in the 70s. thanks for sharing, Best wishes
Ireland in the 70s was a rich, complicated place, and PACKED FULL of brilliant music.

Absolutely beautiful Paul!👌💚
Lyrical beauty in this gorgeous ditty, just so wonderful like most gentle traditional folk songs 🎵 ❤

Search for his original recordings of this and.. The Homes of Donegal.. Also paddy's green shamrock shore.. ☘️☘️ He's a legend
I was around the same age when I discovered this beauty. It never lost its majesty. Enjoy for years to come.
I think Paul Brady is one of the best we have. Him and Christy Dignam...

I'll drink a glass to my Creole girl . . . . . . YESSSSSS
I thought it was very beautiful, I only know The Be Good Tanya's style of this song, I liked the way you sang don't worry about the comment of the last guy.
7 thumbs down from people with no concept of music and genius! Hope they recover soon.
How the hell this has 162 likes is beyond me
Pure talent
New pop music is pure crap
We are seeing the death of great singer songwriters
Hardly. They’re all over the place. You just have to look. Find this song on Spotify and go from there. It’ll suggest similar artists for you. The torch of the 60’s 70’s songwriters is being carried forward quite well.
Check out Gillian Welch and Andrew Marlin of Mandolin Orange/ Watchhouse.
It's fascinating hearing Paul Brady from 2013 after listening to his stunning 1977 performance. In the newer video he seemed at first not completely at home with the song, throwing in vocal flourishes that didn't quite fit, but in the last couple of verses he settled down into it, and sounded quite well indeed.
Ar fheabhas agus buladh bás!
Masferful
He never returned....
I’m Paul Brady’s biggest English fan
Fan from the US here. He's amazing!
Fan living in Germany ....! Love to listen !
Did you ever play with Jo murphy?
Better you are getting Paul
Anyone have a the guitar tab for the intro?
try Open D tuning (DADF#AD) (and the capo a you can sing with)
Is hi playing in DADGAD?
No, open D. DADF#AD
Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Tina Turner, Bonnie Raitt...if he's good enough for them..has to be good...
3 people are deaf.
poor indeed .. he over does a love song all the time !!
stfu idiot
That's Paul Brady. And you, The Duke, are certainly overdone.
Totally disagree.
Goat version 👏 his guitar skills are fooking insane 😊❤
