  • The Lakes of Pontchartrain - Lyrics
'Twas on one bright March morning I bid New Orleans adieu
And I took the road to Jackson town, me fortune to renew
I cursed all foreign money, no credit could I gain
Which filled me heart with longing for the lakes of Pontchartrain
Well I stepped on board of a railroad car beneath the morning sun
I rode the rods 'til evening and I laid me down again
All strangers there, no friends to me, 'til a dark girl towards me came
And I fell in love with a Creole girl by the lakes of Pontchartrain
Well I said, "My pretty Creole girl, me money here's no good
And if it weren't for the alligators, I'd sleep out in the wood"
"You're welcome here, kind stranger, our house, it's very plain
But we never turn a stranger out from the banks of Pontchartrain"
Well she took me into her mammy's house and she treated me right well
The hair upon her shoulders in jet-black ringlets fell
To try to paint her beauty, I'm sure 'twould be in vain
So handsome was my Creole girl by the lakes of Pontchartrain
Well I asked her if she'd marry me, she'd said this could never be
For she had got a lover, and he was far at sea
She said that she would wait for him and true she would remain
'Til he'd returned to his Creole girl by the lakes of Pontchartrain
So fare thee well, me bonny own girl, I'll never may see you more
But I'll ne'er forget your kindness in the cottage by the shore
And at each social gathering a flowing glass I'll drain
And I'll drink a health to me Creole girl by the lakes of Pontchartrain

Was roofing in Oregon in the mid-80s when the album version of this tune came over the local radio. I almost killed myself flying down the ladder to call the station and find at who/what it was. Went that afternoon to the record shop and the owner ordered "Welcome here kind stranger" for me and the LP came a few weeks later. That was 36 years ago!! The whole album is amazing and I still have it.... but this song is the standout. Thank you Mr. Brady for sharing your otherworldly artistry, it has meant alot to me.

September 1986, in Dublin, on our Honeymoon, we were walking along a pedestrian mall when we heard Paul’s song “The Island” from outdoor speakers attached to a record store. We went right in and bought it, and have been Brady fans ever since. Our 38th Anniversary this year, and Paul’s voice still resonates for us of those glory days.

A talented man in touch with his soul..........................................................to capture the essence of a song is not easy to do but Paul does it seemingly with ease. I don't think they know who wrote these words but they think it was during the American civil war where I can only imagine pain, misery, confusion and conflicting emotions were everyday occurrences. I can almost feel this man's weary soul crying out for the gentle human touch of love and kindness in a mad depressing world. Of course we can only imagine and it will likely be far far away from the actual misery he and thousands endured.

Thank you Paul!! ❤
Un saludo desde Bilbao, en el País Vasco,

Amazing vibrato in his voice, suits the style so well. Traditional songs are the best, as they picture the sad definitive farewells people had to face in life. Sometimes music is so beautiful, that it hurts.

Some people write the songs, and nobody can do it better. Some people do the songs better than anyone else can. This may not be his song, but I haven't heard anyone yet who can do it better than he does.

It's fascinating hearing Paul Brady from 2013 after listening to his stunning 1977 performance. In the newer video he seemed at first not completely at home with the song, throwing in vocal flourishes that didn't quite fit, but in the last couple of verses he settled down into it, and sounded quite well indeed.
