I can understand the sentiment, but that would not make it a contest anymore.

It was Syrian flags not Palestinian flags. Back in 2000 there were serious talks for finally Syria recognising Israel and making a peace agreement with it. So the Israeli delegation made a song about hooking up with a Syrian boy and waved Syrian flags.
