"Everything goes south." Nice touch.
Actually, when you're at the South Pole everything is north
Everything goes North.
Shouldn’t it be north though?
@@funeslandia so everything that happens is good no matter what happens?
@@sirclarkmarz That was said about them landing at the geographic north pole
Of course the Soviet’s got there first, that’s almost ideal weather for them.
Da
HA
Norwegians got there first

WOW! I remember reading about this in Reader's Digest in '99. I think an episode of House MD was inspired by this event too. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

@@NotWhatYouThink will y'all make an 1M special?
“Most people wouldn’t do this because of flight controls freezing-“
My dumbass: *sign me up*
The fuel can also freeze :))))
Imagine someone saying: “just heat up the oil tanks”
Congratulations for 1M! this place made me learn lot of stuff. Good job.
Wait, why couldn't the scientist just be evacuated by the small plane used to drop off the crew to build the runway?
Because of the Artic winter, it was mentioned in the beginning of the video my friend
they’re too weak
C130s are tough birds which can land in less than favourable places, also tough enough to suggest less in harsh Arctic winds than a smaller plane
@@StopTakingDamnHandles fuel definitely plays a part too. Hercs have great range in a lot of conditions and can longer routes due to weather.
@@StopTakingDamnHandles You probably don’t understand how windy it can be down in Antarctica
Edit: The highest wind speed recorded in Antarctica is about 199mph(327kmh)
Proud to say,I am one in your million subscribers...Congrats to you.Really deserve it.👍
If anyone has been regular skiing, you might know it's still pretty bumpy so maybe landing with skis is still bumpy but not as bumpy. But anyone thought about how they stop the plane considering the fact the ice makes it nearly impossible to use brakes?
Reverse thrust i guess xd
It's called reverse thrust and spoilers
Reverse thrust
Big balloon like shuttle when landing
I have been to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station many times and was always amazed at how soft the landings were. The LC-130s also have not trouble stopping. Flying into McMurdo in a C17 without skis is also surprisingly soft but they have crews constantly grooming the airfields.
Congratulations on the 1 million U Really Deserve It 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thanks very much!
I’m so happy your channel has completely taken off recently. The information is so cool.
Congrats on 1 Million subscribers.

Wow what a great story definitelly one of my favorite channels👍
Great videos mate just wanted to say also congrats on the one mill!!
4:50 Actually if u are on the south pole, everything/way goes north. :P
Correct, but the last part of the video was about the first Americans who went *North* Pole 😉
On two occasions, Ken Borek Air has been engaged to extract medical evacuees as the US Coast Guard and the US Navy and Air Force declined to risk the mission. Ken Borek has specially prepared and equipped Twin Otter aircraft for extreme polar flying conditions. Those are the "twin Otter aircraft equipped with skis" shown at 2:30 and a great deal more than skis separate these Otters from the original version. Both times, two Twin Otters (one spare) flew all the way from Calgary, Canada to accomplish the rescues.
Okay, but my question about that, is the same 5hing I thought when they showed the aircraft. If they flew those down to build the runway, why not just bring her out on one of those instead?
Man ur videos are good and interesting
Congratulations on hitting a Million Subscribers!
I keep finding these Chanel that are so good at like 34k subs and they just rise
CONGRATS FOR THE 1MILLION SUBS!

See also the '57 Chase / Stroukoff YC-134E. Upgraded C-123 with boundary layer control and blown flaps for STOL performance.
The normal airplane fuselage shape is strengthened and sealed for water operations, and it rides on 2 stout flat "pantobase" skis which lift it out of the water and eliminate the boat shaped stepped hull.
On the skis, it flew from pavement, unimproved smoothed ground, water, sand, swamp, tundra & prairie, ice/ snow.
Great video! My uncle John Taylor was navigator on a cargo plane that served Antarctica, I believe in the mid to late Fifties. I forget the aircraft type, but he had a picture of it on a wall in his living room. Anyway, I'm commenting to point out that as presenter, you misspoke at the end of the video. You said that once you are at the geographic South Pole, everything goes south. The exact opposite is true. From the South Pole, everything goes north.
yoo congratulations for hitting 1 mil!!
Nice touchhh, "Everything goes South" imagine your crew asking the pilot how's our trip so far he replies with " Everything is going south sir"😆

Fun fact, those C-130s with skis only fly out of one airport in the whole world. And it’s the airport that I fly out of
