Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. Dear Kara and Nate
I live in Switzerland nearby and done my fair share of hiking in high alpine regions. I have a wish to you: Please set a better example to your 750k subscribers. People die and get seriously hurt each year in the mountains because they behaved exactly like you did. You were badly equiped, have no experience in these conditions on a glacier, obviously far too little experience to plan your route and the time required correctly and left far too many factors to pure luck.
I promise you: The mountains can be experienced in an incredible way and you obviously are physically fit enough to do this route. But please take a guide next time you go onto a glacier. It takes experience to do this properly and by risking your own health and life you also risk those who will come for your rescue.
Again, please be a better example, respect the mountain and its dangers. Then you can enjoy many adventures also for the next years.

OMg, yes! I stopped watching and ran to the comments. I’m shocked that no one else said anything. I’ve been to Zermatt (Gonergrat) a few times and traversing a glacier alone wasn’t and will never be an option. Thank God they’re still with us.
Yup, exactly that. Besides a guide would probably refuse to take them without the basic Equipment (like proper mountanering boots), let alone do it alone.

Richard Yu there adult enough to make decisions and decide risk worth reward, is it the smartest idea no, but it’s not like rock climbing without equipment😂😂 they had the very bare minimum and chances of something happening not super high, but yes still there, I am 20 and not a child I ride sport bikes and a skydiver, all I said was there adult enough to make choices, people are getting butthurt and saying it was suppppeerr dangerous which it wasn’t
Those giant glaciers with those crevasses in to the abyss triggered some deep rooted phobias I never knew I had.

They are extremely dangerous. You can very easily step on a spot that looks sound and it can collapse beneath you. You have zero reaction time if it happens and you can just disappear into a gorge. Very very dangerous, even more so in summer.
The areas where the water run off was are EXCEEDINGLY dangerous as the ice is compromised there and can run in channels underneath you without you knowing. A small amount of pressure can collapse them. I was cringing SO HARD on some of the areas they were stepping. Definitely not a safe hike for people inexperienced like they are. Even I wouldn't do it and I live in Norway with ample experience in hiking on ice and snow. They are lucky no injuries or worse happened.

@@TurnItUpWorld no, they most likely would not since the water will take an unpredictable and rapidly changing path. You would be surprised at how fast moving water will erode and change ice. And theres really no way for them to locate all the dangerous areas and mark them. They just expect people to not do hikes that are not of their experience level and for them to research and be prepared for what they're up against.
Guys, I am from Zermatt and an active mountaineer. Even your tour seems easy, you took quite some risk. I strongly recommend you to take a tour guide next time. Weather can change super fast and you lose orientation. A fall in to a crevasse can be deadly. They can be deep, run under the glacier and be filled with water. Easy to drawn. Take care.
Yeah that's true you should go with a guide because if you did one wrong move you could die, but still we love your videos xx
But are the blue trails really supposed to be done with a guide? I go every year 3 weeks to saas grund and we always do the blue tour over the glacier even without crampons. There is no danger at all because you have the poles you need to follow

@@MrSepox Nope, it depends. Blue-white paths which don't cross glaciers are supposed to be okay to go alone. On glaciers there is always a risk depending on the specific conditions and your experience. You CAN take the risk (which on marked trails is very small compared to other routes over glaciers), but there is still a risk. But there are glaciers which are safe to cross, because they don't have crevasses or only very small ones. But if you're not experienced walking with crampons, like in this video, jumping over these crevasses unsecured... you just never know. If the glacier doesn't have snow on it at all, though, the risk is almost zero for hidden crevasses. The glacier to the Brittannia hut is okay or the one to the Bordier hut as well. The problem is, the signs don't tell you whether it's a "safe" glacier or not. But there aren't many marked glacier trails that are not safe to go alone. The one to the Monte-Rosa hut however is one of them.
I’m from Greenland and I can only say the same. Too many tourists no matter the level of experience are unfamiliar with the terrain.

Just because you can do this hike alone, doesn't mean you have to do it. I live there and these mountains / glaciers can be dangerous terrain. Each year there are (deadly) accidents and people fall into these crevasses. Most ppl. who go there are either experienced or take a guide (and always have the right equipment).

I get why the guy who rented them the crampons was very concerned- if I rented you equipment and you didn’t have the right shoes on a glacier - I could be the last one talking to you
They had sherpas on Everest and here they didn’t know how to put on the crampons correctly - so while they are experienced hikers, glaciers and ice are different- you always see people roped together and then you have to know how to pull another person out of a crevasse - a bit reckless here unfortunately

Nope when you are either one of the rescue team or the hut manager with a decent morality and you have to go and rescue them, isn't nice. I had to do it once and it wasn't nice.

I'm outraged at the local authorities and the shop owner who let this happen. This is no joke and could've ended so badly. I live in Switzerland and deadly accidents in alpine hiking sadly are a weekly occurrence. This video had all the right ingredients to be the next disaster. Everyone DON'T TRY SUCH A HIKE ON YOUR OWN.
Arent you supposed to know about the blue trails? Its marked very well and there is no snow on the glacier… ive done alot of blue trails and there is no problem at all for me

Kids, don’t try this at home. Normally, there are guides and ropes and equipment for this sort of glacier crossing. Those crevasses are hundreds of feet deep and the ice is visibly rotted and melting. I’m shocked that they allow people on that glacier in summer... one wrong step and you’re not just injured, you’re gone... no funeral, just a memorial...
I’ve been on that glacier but in winter with a guide and ropes and such... I’ve looked into one of those crevasses and they are deeper than you can imagine...
I’m shocked they just stood there right next to the water flow. I just can’t.

@@chrisb944 For complete begginers, I'd say a rope is always needed on a glacier, no matter the conditions.
@@polarlondon no because if one falls, the other one will fall as well because he can't hold the first falling person on the hard ice...
@@chrisb944 so that's why you should tie a few (break)nuts in the rope. They hit the edge of the crevasse and hopefully slow you down. You should also bring an ice axe and icescrews to make an acher point to be able to make a rescue attempt (off your buddy that went down)
@@knarf_inc4790 1 the chance of holding someone is still lower them the chance of falling as well. 2.Belaying only makes sense when the terrain is steeper

PLEASE don't do this hike without a mountain guide. You see the tags white-blue-white - that means "alpine hiking trail". And to cross a glacier without a rope is a no-go!
No, it's not a no-go. It depends on the glacier. No one uses a rope when going to Bordier hut or Brittannia hut.
This is what its says for people who want to visit the Monte Rosa hut: Mountain guide recommended GLACIER CROSSING
That's so true. I would never recommend to do your first glacier alone, even in the summer when there is no snow covering the crevasses. And it would also be smarter to walk on a rope in case one of them falls.
As a Swiss with some mountaineering-experience I defintely agree. This journey sounds like a death sentence. Not appropriate shoes, no rope and no spike, no mountain experience, no local knowledge, unstable weather conditions and wrong time planing. All this is why you only should do such a trip with a mountaneer-guide who has this knowledge and knows how to use appropriate equipement. You are very lucky that nothing terrible happened.
This was actually pretty dangerous (me being from Switzerland)... every year people fall into these crevasses... tens of meters deep down...hmmm, not safe :-/

A sane person doesn’t get into a car and think to themselves “today I’m going to drive 150km/hr but to challenge myself I’m going to do it without a seatbelt and with tires that may or may not be suitable for the snow covered road I’m about to go on LOL but you know YOLO!” That is the car equivalent of what Kara and Nate just did.

Those crevices scare the crap out of me. I could never do that. Even just watching you guys makes my entire body tense up. That is so damn scary. Literally one step from never being heard from again and dying in such a horrible way. I just can’t.
this is good example of people thinking that they can do anything because they think nothing bad happens to them and only happens to people on the news. it’s sad to see this being promoted to such a large audience. As someone who grew up hiking around glaciers, i would never hike alone or without a guide because it’s just not safe or practical.

As a Swiss what you did there crossing the Glacier without a rope or experience is extremely dangerous. Encouraging people to do the same with your video is utterly irresponsible.
Indeed. Happy they made it but were a bit too casual about it as seen on the glacier. And seems like the way down will be worse for them. Really, Switzerland, unlike the US, will not hold your hand, there won't be fences and guards telling you where you can and can't go. Everything is open, it's upon you and your judgement to asses a situation and go if you're prepared enough. In that case, they should have taken a guide and better check the weather. Happy they made it but they got lucky. please don't encourage it.

So incredibly dangerous hiking glaciers. I would not recommend this to anyone unless they were AT LEAST somewhat experienced hikers and fully understood the dangers involved in hiking across glaciers and crevasses. Being properly equipped and prepared for sudden changes in the weather while hiking in mountainous terrain is essential.
They got extremely lucky. Considering they're hiking experience (never worn crampons), they should have hired a guide.
They hiked to Everest Base Camp, so they definitely have quite a bit of hiking experience. And they crossed a glacier (with crampons) when they were in Patagonia. So they certainly aren't being completely reckless here.

It actually is pretty reckless - another Swiss on here gave a link to an article where a 17 year old Japanese tourist died last year at the same hut they went to - just wearing crampons / he was told by the hut manager that his equipment was inadequate and fell into a crevasse because he went back into the glacier while waiting for the helicopter, those poles also mean something - they are blue which means Alpine trail - ropes, pick, crampons, compass, and experienced mountain hikers only - the fact that they aren’t saying anything about that and that they aren’t carrying the equipment leads me to believe they didn’t know- why encourage dangerous behavior, you are absolutely right

Wow! I just started to follow these two adventurers and was about to give them props! Then I started to read the comments ! I have never hiked a Glacier in my life so I have no concept of what is needed and what precautions to take. Kara and Nate had literally no proper gear according to most comments here; they took this hike as the hikes I weekly take here in Oakland CA (just need hiking shoes and maybe poles). I enjoyed the video because it seemed adventurous and I’m that kind of person but honestly I was not aware that they did this hike completely the wrong way, unprepared; I guess the video does not really tell the full story (dangers). Thanks 🙏🏽 everyone for keeping us all aware of the dangers, this is much appreciated.

This is a dangerous crossing, it's long and when you get caught in a summer storm you will crap your pants, done it many times as a acclimatization hike but always with one or two of my climbing mates and roped up and remember those choppers don't fly for free if you don't have insurance it will set you back a few thousand dollars. My advice, hire a guide
The health insurance usually pays 2/3 of a rescue flight, I experienced it myself. A flight costs around 3000 to xy francs (depending on condition). So you have to be ready to pay at around 1000 francs. If you are a Rega sponsor, they will carry the rest.

Extremely irresponsible to traverse a glacier unroped and without proper equipment. Especially in the afternoon, on a hot day like this. On a glacier you use "bridges" to cross over crevasses and in such weather the are likely to be weakened by heat. People, don't do this, they were incredibly lucky the didn't get injured or worse.

If there ARE bridges to be used on such a route, then it's correct what you're saying. But there are glaciers without such bridges. If there is no snow on the glacier, they are safe to cross if they don't have big crevasses.

Don't go like this on a glacier especially like that one full of crevasses: without ice axe, without harness, without proper shoes, WITHOUT EXPERIENCE (knots,
recovery maneuvers, ), without some ice pitons, pulleys, etc. They had only basic crampons!
But they were so happy to do a new thing by themseves, ahahahah so happy-go-lucky couple ahahah!

I traveled to Zermatt in 2016 and rode that train up to the top of the mountain for lunch, but these views around the corner and up the glacier are UNBELIEVABLE! Truly amazing - can't wait to get back to the Swiss Alps next summer!!

This couple is not given enough credits for their hardwork in sharing us beautiful sights and places around the world. I can only imagine the challenges and tough trecking or hiking they had been through just to reach their destination and share with us their amazing experience.. The views they had accumulated so far is too little for the amount of satisfaction the viewers get from their videos. I myself is a new fan and i enjoyed a lot. Anyway thanks for sharing us you wonderful experience in your travel and keep safe always.

Dear Kara and Nate, I am 77 and live on a fixed income. You have taken me to places that I would have never been able to experience with out you. I have climbed mountains, gone snorkeling, ridden the Trans Siberian Express, visited Vietnam, So much fun and adventure right from my recliner. I have worried about just like you were one of my own grandchildren. I was especially worried about you on that bad glacier but nothing ventured nothing gained. I was tremendously relieved when you made it back down from that! I sometimes do not watch you for awhile and because I watch you on my TV usually I am just now subscribing but I love you both and be careful on your travels..
