Brian Goulet's Top 7 Shading Fountain Pen Inks

  • You'll definitely get a chuckle with the intro of this video, for my top 7 shady....err....shading inks. What is shading? It's a common (and often desired) aspect of fountain pen ink where there is pooling in certain parts of a letter when writing, so that the color and saturation of the ink appears different within a single letter or word. Shading inks are something commonly sought out by fountain pen enthusiasts because it's a characteristic that can't be achieved with ballpoint or rollerball pens. A wider nib helps bring out shading.
    I'm often asked which shading inks are my favorite, and to be quite honest, it's really difficult to narrow down even to a top 7 list. I could just as easily have made it a top 40. I chose to focus on trying to get a somewhat varied color range, especially as I've found that certain color shades tend to be better shaders than others. Oranges and turquoises tend to all have incredible shading, whereas reds and blacks seldom have any.
    One distinction to make here is that I omitted inks with "sheen", as that's not really what I'd consider shading by how I've defined it here. You'll likely see some incredible inks I've left out here that you would have wanted to see, it's very likely it's a sheening ink instead of a shader.
    Without further ado, here are my top 7 shading inks (in no particular order):
    Noodler’s Apache Sunset (4:18) - www.gouletpens.com/products/n...
    Noodler’s Black Swan in Australian Roses (5:24) - www.gouletpens.com/products/n...
    Diamine Marine (6:34) - www.gouletpens.com/products/d...
    Noodler’s Navajo Turquoise (7:27) - www.gouletpens.com/products/n...
    Noodler’s Golden Brown (8:03) - www.gouletpens.com/products/n...
    De Atramentis Mint Turquoise (9:03) - www.gouletpens.com/products/d...
    Noodler’s Lexington Gray (9:37) - www.gouletpens.com/products/n...
    I hope you enjoyed the video and my selections. I'd love to hear your favorite shading inks in the comments below.

    Lexington gray is my favorite for writing without being too crazy, and inking art under watercolor.

  • @MicheleLHarvey
    @MicheleLHarvey Před 7 lety +9

    I have purchased Lexington Grey and must say, it doesn't disappoint. It's a nice neutral grey (like a pencil grey,) shades beautifully and is perfectly bulletproof. As to Noodler's turquoise, I found it a touch too light and opted for Noodler's Navy instead, for a deep, saturated, shading, teal blue. Red black is a standout in every way, and is always inked in a pen. Golden brown is a little unsaturated to me, but Kiowa Pecan is deeper and shades very nicely. Noodler's Walnut is an even deeper brown. Although dark and saturated it shades well. In all four of these Noodler's inks the shading is more a tonal gradation rather than hue (or color shift like Apache Sunset: from red to yellow.) This tonal gradation is apparent on a page and gives a lovely variation and character to your writing. It states, "this is a fountain pen."

    So many great things about this video, where to start? The cheesy open was great fun. I don't mind the Q&A videos and others that just have Brian talking straight to the camera but it's nice to get something different once in a while. The production values all the way through, cutting between the writing samples and Brian talking, were very good. You clearly have a very talented media team - congrats to them and you!
    I hear FP people talk about holy grail pens all the time, but shading inks are my true holy grail. I am a sucker for a review that mentions an ink is a great shader, which is why every single one of these will end up on my Goulet Pens wishlist shortly. :-) In particular, I have GOT to get hold of some Apache Sunset because every time I see a writing sample of it it makes my index finger twitch - you know, the one that pushes the "Add to Cart" button on your website?
    And finally, on a completely irrelevant note, I was shocked to see Brian sporting the dry-look hairstyle! I don't think I've ever seen one of your videos (since you grew your hair out) where you weren't rocking the gel spikes. I'm not commenting on whether it's better or worse, just that it was definitely noticed!

    Would love a sequel on this one because there have been some fantastic shaders to come out more recently. Red ink is indeed a hard one for instance, but Monteverde Cherry Danish is fantastic at it. Monteverde in general is pretty consistently good at shading in fact and my favorite orangey shader is Fire Opal. Decent runner up is oddly Colorverse Brunch Date, which is another one that looks great on cream paper. There were several real winners in this year's Inkvent as well; notably Harmony, Ash, and Yuletide (yet another teal.) Perhaps the most interesting shader in my own collection is Sailor Studio 224, a nice greeney grey that shades purple. Love that nonsense.

I'm hunting for more good shaders now, which is why I'm here. We also have a video on sheening inks as well! (czcams.com/video/_np2EZpmIGA/video.html). In general, the broader the nib, the wetter/better they work with these sort of inks. The TWSBI broad nib is probably a personal favorite of mine, but Lamy has some stub nibs that could work as well. Also, paper plays a big part in getting the most out of those inks as well. Definitely go for Tomoe River paper if you want to see all the sheen. - Colin

      The Goulet Pen Company I have N. Golden Brown, which is indeed a fantastic shader (I've also found Kiowa Pecan an excellent shader.) but I have none of the rest. I have Black Swan in English Roses, but now simply must try the Australian. Navajo Turquoise (also purported to be a wonderful mixing ink) is really high up on my list. I've heard Noodler's Red Black, Ottoman Azure, Bad Blue Heron,Gruene Cactus and Habanero shade well. It seems all the Diamine inks are said to shade well, so I have some catching up to do, being a big Noodler's fan.

    Great intro & overview. From my experience shading is VERY dependent on nib & paper. Apache Sunset in a vintage flex nib on Tomoe river paper is fantastic (my Holiday letter favorite). I have used most of your Noodler's examples. At times, I see great shading but other times don't, due pen & paper variations. Viewers should know, shading will vary, a lot.

    This was really helpful. Since I don't actually know what he means by "sheening" inks, so a video on that would be great. It was also really neat to see how different pens and inks worked together.

    I love the Navajo Turquoise. It's no joke that the 3 oz Noodler's bottles last a long time, I've been working on a bottle of Noodler's Bulletproof Black for a couple of years... it might go faster, if it weren't for all the other colors I rotate through. It's more of a sheen ink, but Emerald of Chivor has some really nice qualities, depending on paper, and stroke, and pen, it shades from a blue-green to a forest green to black.

    Thank you for your in-depth videos. I opted for a "lexington gray" as my first fountain pen ink. I wanted a shading ink because the purpose is for drawing . The pen is a Noodlers Konrad.

      @JsonAKoanTECH Před 7 lety

      Absolutely correct! I made the combination choice based off the in depth Goulet reviews. My next pen I'm leaning towards is an Ahab, but I am still not sure about the larger Goulet #6 nib yet, either 1.5 or broad. I wanted a stiffer nib for my Konrad but I hear they dont fit anymore? This set up I am leaning towards a polar brown for safe winter sketching.

    One ink that you didn't mention, but I found in a sample I bought for a friend and now have on my list of inks to buy is Noodler's Purple Heart. I hadn't thought much about it because I love Baystate Concord Grape and North African Violet, but she asked me to order a sample for her; she is new to fountain pens, so I cleaned out her pens, inked them up, and showed her how important the type of paper was by writing a little on some rhodia paper. I was surprised at how much shading I saw in just a medium nib jinhao pen. I also wanted to daily that North African Violet has great shading on fabriano aquaeco(an art notebook I had laying around.

    Brian, great video on shading. Thanks so much for making and posting it.
    I would very much like a similar video recommendation for inks with sheen, but hope that we do not confuse sheen with sparkle.
    I consider J. Herbin 1670 inks, such as Stormy Grey and the new Bleu Ocean, with their suspended gold flecks, to be sparkle, and not a true sheen. Just my opinion.

    It's not the saturation that changes, it's the brightness (inversely proportional to the intensity).
    The saturation depends only on the ink dye/pigment.

    5 hours in and already 30 comments. We are an opinionated bunch. :) Brian you've upped your game in these last few videos. No, I don't want to see what you have inside your trench coat... :) Thanks for the infotainment.
    You have some pretty shady choices on your list and I have some on them. But the one thats has caught me off guard and jumped to near the top of my list is the one Larry Usselman mentioned _Rohrer & Klingner Alt-Goldgrun_ and amazing shader with a unique color of green it goes from a olive to a very light almost green. The other ones that I feel got left out are Diamine inks _Sherwood Forest_ a more subtle shading than the R & K but a very pretty dark green. I think my other favorite is _Diamine Oxblood_ ! Aside the fun from telling people that you're writing to them in Oxblood it looks wonderful its not a bright red more of a maroon red with a lighter brick red. The competition to the Noodlers Apache Sunset, imo, is _Diamine Autumn Oak_ beautiful orangey ink. Of course ALL of these look better with a broader nib, I love a 1.1mm stub. Although those of you that have fine or medium nibs I've found that the Alt-goldgrun and the Autumn Oak still do a reasonable shading job but obviously not like you would get with a wider nib. Also very important as, Brian said, the _Quality_ of the PAPER Matters, Rhodia, Clairefontaine, and for amazing results Tomoe River. Lastly as in all things YMMV.

    That was a funny intro. I'm still laughing. I didn't cotton to shading at first. It seemed odd, like mistake or something. But it really grew on me and now I love it. Apache Sunset reminds me of Autumn maple leaves (my favorite season). I especially love the Noodler's Golden Brown, I use ivory Rhodia paper and with a 1.1 stub the shading puts me in mind of pirate writing on on a treasure map. ARRRR Matey!

    Just a little feedback, I've got both the Noodler's Turquoise and the Pelikan 4001 Turquoise, and the Pelikan shades (for me, anyway) a little better, *and* it dries faster. Ran it in my Pilot Metropolitan and it was utterly reliable; it's now in the Platinum Plasir, and I'm thinking it will ultimately find a home in my Konrad, for obvious reasons.

    Brian - I love this list. I wasn't ever a fan of the grays until I saw this list. I just *love* my Lexington Gray.
    Funny story - I just purchased a bottle of Noodler's Habanero from a local shop, but it looks like the Apache Sunset as you've shown here, instead of all the color swatches of Habanero I've seen on your site and other places. Still looking for that lovely orange color though. The Lamy Copperorange is awesome - and shades very nicely on the wetter pens like the Noodler's Ahab - but I'm looking for a brighter orange color.

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  Před 5 lety

      Shading (and sheening) are a bit harder to quantify because the paper & nib size play such a huge role in it. Different than shimmering inks where you can actually see particulate, that's why it isn't a filter. That said, we do have a collections page of some of our favorites: www.gouletpens.com/collections/shading-inks - Colin

    Loved your quirky review, Brian, and I'd really love to try some Noodler's inks. Amazon UK charges more than twice Amazon USA's price, e.g. 3 oz 'Apache Sunset' jumps from $13.09 (£8.62) to *$26.56 (£17.50)* which is a bit steep for a bottle of ink! And eBay is similar. Can you do better, or suggest a workaround? British Diamine inks cost more in the USA, but not by this factor.
