Loved this video! I just changed my oil for the first time on a 2016 Mazda CX5 and was psyched by how easy it was. (I previously took the car to a shop to get the oil changed, but no longer.) This video definitely contributed to the ease of it.
For the access panel, I removed the screws needing a Philips head screwdriver, but left the piece needing a flathead in place and simply swiveled the panel around out of the way. (Less work and less pieces to potentially lose.)
After going through the trouble of looking for crush washers, I discovered the previous owner put an aftermarket drain plug in (with a rubber gasket) which meant I don't need to use a crush washer. I was confused at first as my drain plug needed a 13mm socket wrench rather than an 8mm hex wrench. But it made things a whole lot easier for me!
I would recommend taking the drain plug out first (and letting it drain) before taking the oil filter off. Doing it in this order makes for a lot less mess as there's no oil spewing out when you take the filter off. Also, be sure to put the oil cap back on and the dip stick securely in place before starting up your engine again to test for leaks, or else you'll have oil splatter all over your engine, hoses, and everything else under the hood. (I like to keep things clean under there.)
Finally, topping off your fluids and changing out the air filters is just as easy on this vehicle. I can't imagine paying someone else $150+ for a job I can do myself at a fraction of the cost while giving myself the security and satisfaction of knowing I did the job myself, and it was done correctly. Seriously, this was easy!
While the oil is draining is a good time to check tire pressures and look over the vehicle for loose suspension items, brakes pad material, ws wipers and dirty air filters. When finished, be sure to only check your oil level on level ground.
Im in the market looking at small SUV's and this is one of them (2013 cx5).Been lookin at videos to make sure oil changes aren't a complicated process and this one looks easy enough! Appreciate your video. Now I'll know the proper way to do it if this ends up being my choice to purchase.
Great video! Thanks for sharing! Gotta love the ease of access to the plug and filter!
Thank you so much for making this video!! I’ve been wanting to learn to change my Mazda’s oil on my own for some time now so I can be ~independent~ 😆 the links to products are a huge help too! Now I can order everything at once and not have to search and search for the right stuff. Even 4yrs later and your video was still a help to someone-Thanks!!!
Excellent video... clear, concise and to the point! Thanks
Very good, to the point, no excess talking, video. One suggestion: explain how to get the plastic clips back in the oil cover panel.
Nice job thanks for the tip on the drain plug seal !
I just successfully did it thanks to your video.
Thanks I really needed that. I needed to change my oil, but not all cars are the same so thanks.
Thanks Captain, great vid, liked the advice that only need 4.5 quarts
It can vary. My manual said 4.8 qts but I noticed my Wixx filter was a tad larger than the one on there. So mine actually took the whole 5 qts and the oil level is, still, halfway between the two dots on the dipstick...weird!
Great tutorial thanks for your help. Your miles in front of many other tutorials out there
Thank you for the kind words
Nice video tutorial. Thank-you! Smart to use gloves while changing the oil. I usually don't, but will now.
Thanks for watching!
For the 2012 model (european not sure if it makes any difference), there isn't an access panel for the whole thing. There are two separate panels, a small one for the sump plug to the rear and a smaller one for the filter a bit further forwards. The engine is the same though so filter and sump plug in same position. Its a bit awkward to get a strap wrench in there to take the filter off. I struggled on but it took a good 10 mins to get my hands in the right place. If you have one of those filter socket things which fit snug over the end of the filter you should be ok. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the tip on the drain plug. I have a 2014 Mazda CX-5 and I'm about to do my own oil change for the first time. I was about to head underneath only with a couple of wrenches and sockets for the drain plug, but I didn't know I needed a hex socket.
Raymond Belair hex/alan. 8mm
Yeah and the drain plug seal
I changed mine out for a regular 19mm hex plug. As well, the torque spec for the plug is 23-30 ft.-lbs.
I wonder what the hole size on the crush washer is....wonder if a Toyota crush washer would fit? Nice and clean video, Cleaner than I could do as I would surely have a bunch of audio of me grunting and breathing loud getting under and unscrewing the filter and all that, lol.
I appreciate your effort in making your video as it did help me. I must say though, getting those plastic rivets back into the skid panel was somewhat frustrating. One other thing, perhaps because I'm used to seeing a dipstick with a "L" and a "F", I was kind of perplexed with the Mazda as I saw no markings on it.
I believe from what I can see I'd the 2 holes in the stick upper and lower
Great job...Saved to my favourites...Thank you!
Thank you! 👍
great video simple and to the point
Glad it helped
Great vid, thanks😀 I was concerned about the reset
Thanks for watching!
I'm thinking of buying a '16. I like where the oil filter is located. Nice demo, thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Great Draplin cap, wearing the same one as I watch
V
Great vid thanks.
Ive made the concious decision to do mine (2015 CX5 2.5). The thing is here in New Zealand I think the oil rating will be a little different as our climate is somewhat milder than the U S.
Thanks!
Definitely going to need to start doing this myself now that I know how easy it is. This was very helpful, Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Ya, the first one is always more time, and then they can be as easy as 20minutes. Key is to buy the parts in bulk, so you always have it with you vs, running to stores to get the oil, or filter, and washer. Keep the tools marked or in a oil change storage so you always have them. This makes things much easier. @@CaptainBerz
Very helpful, thank you
Thanks for watching!
Have you done valve cleaning work on your cx-5?
Thanks. Going to start changing mine, sick and tired of getting ripped off by the quick change places. I can’t see those guys while they’re working and have no idea if they even bother to change the filter. They check off like 50 things and you know damm well they don’t bother actually checking that stuff. I know because once I asked them to fill my window washer fluid and check my tire air pressure since my warning light was on. They checked off on the sheet, but my fluid was still empty and my air pressure warning light was still on!
Exactly same thing happened to me twice
Great video.
Thankyou.
Thanks man very helpful
Thanks for watching!
what is the weight capacity for the ramps?
so nicely strait forward
following your video and already subscribed. what engine oil do you recommend for a tropical country like here in the Philippines? my CX-5 has 77kms in the odo..
I like Pennzoil Ultra Platinum.
Very helpful video!! Quick question how many miles your car has? Mine has 111,000 not sure if use 0-20 or 5-20 ..
Always use what is recommended in your owners manual and on the oil fill cap.
My oil spec is 5w-30 nice work I got all I need bar washers ill get some Tom I use mob oil on my motorcycle
Is this a diesel or petrol? Also what engine is it?
Don't forget when you pull up on the stands to chock the back wheels and apply the e-brake.
Protip, use OEM or Napa Gold filter instead. Those filters are specially designed for the skyactiv mazda motor, other filters are made for multiple engines and are more like a "happy medium" for many different engines.
Wix 57002 is also made for the Skyactiv. Otherwise, use Oe for sure. They are often same price or even cheaper.
The engine makes ZERO difference on the filter used. Oil filters do 1 thing, and that is filter oil. No matter what engine is running, there is oil going from inside the engine and cycled through the oil filter. Its vertually the same oil for many engines. The filter performance is based on the pleats of filter material, surface area, and how they are designed to trap oil. Wix is good, Purolator is good. If it fits the car, then use it. Some OEMs use cheaper parts, and some do not(Toyota does not use cheaper parts). I don't know if Mazda oil filters, or who makes them for Mazda, So you might want to see if the OEM is tested and how it performance vs others. I would avoid Fram or other store name filters.
I have a 2013 there is no settings…no applications…I can’t figure out how to even turn on oil change needed or reset. I see videos to push the ignition switch 2 times. But that don’t work. Any ideas?
Thanks bud!
When you use the ramps the car is at an angle right? Is it able to completely drain and also while filling get the correct level? While in the shop it goes straight up, any guidelines from Mazda service? Thanks appreciate the video
You’re overthinking it.
My 2014 CX-5 GT has a 19mm socket drain plug instead of the 8mm hex bit. Possible the dealer swapped it. Up to now they changed the oil but they were bought out by crooks so I change it myself now.
Good vid. Any reason for not removing drain plug before filter?
Filter only holds x amount of fluid. You won't get any more out of it the other way around.
Understood, but here is my thinking in why I asked. If you drain the engine from the drain plug first, there should be less of a mess when removing the filter, since the drain hole is a much more controllable stream than the hole where the filter screws onto. Yes, the filter still has the same amount of oil, but the engine would have less, since it was drained first from the drain plug.
@@amanfra2121 that's how I do it. Always have
Excellent video. I have one small issue, unless I don't use my vehicle very much, I'll be changing my oil every 5k miles, regardless of what it says on the container. But that's just me.
Yea, I always do spring and fall. Everyone’s different. 👍
It's generally a good idea to do it every 3k-5k or every 3 months or follow your owners manual for your car. The engineers that desgined the car will have a better idea than anyone on the internet.
Where did you get the replacement drain plug washer ?
If in America I got mine at Advance Auto Parts for $0.70-ish each
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Amazon shows the drain plug gaskets @ 10 for 80 cents US, plus $8.17 shipping. Not Prime eligible. I'd think 2 stamps would do it. Gouging.
Now seeing 10-pack for $5.99 with free delivery.
dap it’s just 2 different ways the seller gets same money, a trick to make you click
I didn't see the link for the jack stands.
I think he meant "ramps".
Question, do think some old oil would stay in engine when still on the Jack stands ?
i shouldn't because the drain plug is very tapered down so a little angle shouldn't affect it.
Thanks for that answer, I was wondering about that. Now I will change my oil also.
The plug points towards the back of the car, if anything having it on the ramp will actually aid the flow
Castrol is the preferred brand for Mazdas, at least it's what I read in the manual. Of course, you may use whatever you like. Great video otherwise. I'm planning on doing my change on my 2016 soon as well
Rock on!
Castrol has only 1 thing good - marketing. Buy original Mazda Skyactiv or Mobil 1
Thanks =)
Thanks for watching!
You don't save that much money by changing your own oil anymore and the disposing of the drain oil is a pain in the ass ,but the advantage is ya get first hand eyes on what's going on under your vehicle. Has saved me major problems for many years. I intend to change my own oil and do my own lubes until they pull my cold dead body out from under my car!! LOL Good video!!
All auto parts stores are supposed to take used oil. Alternatively you should be able to drop it off at any mechanic they may charge you a few bucks.
doesn't save much money? In Poland we pay 300$ just for oil change, which takes like 4 hours and I am an ex-mechanic, so I do all kind of repairs if I have time. Today I have bought the best oil and filter for total 50$, so yeah 250$ is not that much in USA, but in Poland it is like week salary and it takes up to 1h if you wait for every single drop to come out. Plus you know what parts you have - a lot of mechanics just pour the cheapest oil and tell you that it's just the one that should be poured.
@@jahreqq9542 ; $250 is a lot of money in the USA too . But even if you took your car to a oil change business it would cost no where near that !! That's just a rip-off . I don't even know what Jiffy-lube charges at present because I don't go there , but even if you choose to use full synthetic and do it yourself it wouldn't cost $50 .
@@KevinRhoads ; I remember years ago going to a local "wrench" to dump off used oil . He wanted $5 to take my oil. I could see on the back wall of his shop he had the type of furnace that burns multi-fuel . He was heating his shop with the used oil and still charging to accept it ! Me and my oil left as quickly as we could .
@@orionfixr7713 good oil cost around 35$ + filters ~ total 50$

Authorized service of Mazda - after 20k km it cost above 220$ for oil and oil filter, every next is more expensive if you need warranty to be covered
Video says 8mm but link says 3/8 which is close to 9mm I think. Which one is it?
Japanese car so everything is metric. 3/8 is just his socket wrench, the bit you need is 8mm Hex Bit socket...less than $5 at Oreillys (I needed one)
Add a little oil to the oil filter first, then screw it back on
Good idea but not required
thank you :)
You're welcome!
@@CaptainBerz Ayo bro my shits been drainin for like 20 min still drippin every 10-20 seconds. Should I keep waitin til it stops 100%?
I think u have to make sar straight to make oil go easy
If you do another video like this, you might wanna remind people to check the old filter for the gasket.
Good tip!
Thanks......learned it the hard way.
I also learned the hard way. Damn you fram. Also he should of filled up the oil filter. It is straight up. Why wouldn’t you
Real good tip
I poured some of the oil into the new oil filter. Then I poured the rest of 5qt. Do you think it might overfilled ?
As long as you didn’t put more than the owners manual said your good. Check dipstick.
did you notice that 4.8 quarts wasnt enough to fill the car? ... i just did mine and also put in 4.8 quarts and its barley any on the dipstick?
I just changed mine today for the 1st time since buying the car a few months ago, & it did the same thing! Added 4.8 qts, started up, shut off, let drain down, checked oil, barely above bottom hole. Let drain down 30 minutes, still looks like 3/4 qt low. Had been slightly above the top hole since I bought it.
Added the remainder of the 5qt jug, let drain down, & checked again. Now based on measurement between the holes & measurement from top hole to oil line, it's still down 0.3 qts. That means it wants 5.3 qts for an oil & filter change, & that's the exact spec for my 2012 Mazda 3S 2.5L, even tho that's a different motor. Nobody else replied to your question in the 5 months since you posted it, but it's hard to believe you & I are the only 2 people this has happened to!
Yes, I checked for leaks, and even removed the access panel again & checked - bone dry.
Yes, I'm pushing the dipstick in all the way! Not a newcomer here, mechanic since the 1960s.
TG
Our 2016 was the same...I put in 4.8 qts after running it for a few minutes (to get oil into the filter) Rechecked and still a bit low so ended up putting in the whole 5 qts. A bit low in oil is better than a bit high...too much oil can blow a gasket in a car...big bucks to get fixed.
Same, going to pour the whole 5 qts on my next change. Mine 2.5L
what about the engine air filter?
You don't change they when you change the oil.
Thanks
Welcome
Good job...and ensure old rubber oil gasket isn’t stuck up in the car else it’s a mess when 4.8 qts comes back out when you fill it!!!
Btw, in summer I use 5w-20; winter switch back to 0w-20.
I'm pretty sure the CX-5 uses only synthetic.
Only use 0W-20 synthetic....modern engines are highly engineered and using anything else is only asking for trouble!
I find it easier to remove the unnecessary oil from the jug before fillling the crankcase. For this car, 2/3 of a cup is 6 ounces which 2/10 of a quart.
Why 0w-20. When I put my reg in it says 5w-30????
Manual
Thanks, I can finally sabotage my bastard neighbour who blasts music almost 24/7(Yes, I've tried talking to him)
I pay $60 for oil change. If I do it myself what are my savings?
Depends. $25? Peace of mind knowing it got done and you weren’t scammed. Knowing you use the oil you want. Etc.
Well aside from initial investment for ramps/jacks, tools, etc., 5 quart jug of 0w20 or 5w30 (both are acceptable to use in CX-5) full synthetic is often around $20-$25 at Walmart. Can find rebate deals on top of that from oil manufacturers or sometimes auto part stores. Oil filter generally around $6-$10. Try to go with an OE filter. New crush washer is $1 or less for the drain plug. So in general a DIY oil change can be around $35-ish give or take on deals/rebates.
If you have time better do it yourself. You know you torque the oil nut right and filled up real new oil. You see some scam shops saying they change oil but actually didn't it they overtight the drain plug or forgot to tighten plug, stuffs like that. But it's everyone choice.
Well, if you use Supertech full synthetic with a SuperTech filter, it should be about $18 + sales tax. ($42 savings not counting the one time purchase for tools). The Supertech oil may only be good for 5,000 mile intervals?
Those are ramps... not jack stands
Should fill the oil filter with oil.
BERZ , u still have the ford ranger
Never owned a Ranger
My bad😂 I've seen it in your vids before maybe nates?
luvvvv the shit out of my rhino ramps
those "jack stands" are actually ramps lol
Ive owned 7 cars and 9 motorcycles in my life. I have never to this day changed a crush washer on a oil plug.
James Adams so you’ve been a dumbfuck your whole life?
Even so, if you're going to do a video on it, you should be demonstrating the correct way to do it.
Well ive been a technician for 20 years... i have done it on all my vehicules and all of the customer's vehicule.
Do not wait 7-8k for an oil change for city driving. Do your research on this. I have. And depending on where you live 0w20 is actually a US cafe recommendation. Do your research on that as well. 5w30 will do in a pinch. Wouldn't go higher than that or lower than the recommended.
I'm not going to comment on negativity to this comment. Like i said. Do your own research. If you don't want to then stick to factory specs.
proper (and less messy) way is to drain the oil from the pan first, then do the filter
You change it every 5k not twice a season garntuee you'll have future problems
Grammar much?
1st you should drain oil before you take filter off 2nd you should change oil every 5000 not twice a year.
1st, 2nd, 3rd.....🙄
Obviously only 2 things u don't need here are brake clean gloves
Did you go to school past 6th grade?
If you have a 2016 you should take it to the dealership for oil change because you are in the warranty window. if there are any recalls or anything the technician finds during inspection and test drive it will be covered. The cost of an oil change at a dealership is hardly more than the cost, time, labor and hassle of doing it yourself.
The local dealership where I live uses Pennzoil Bulk oil. They said that is what Mazda provides them with, even though the owners manual suggests Castrol GTX synthetic. Changing my own and using the Castrol. Will use an oem oil filter though.
I used channel lock pliers. Filter is so tiny it was simple to do.
Here in the UK, Mazda want over £150 for an oil filter change. I'm not sure what that would be in $, but I got 5L of C3 synthetic oil for £22.50 and a filter for £6 so less than a fifth of the price. The job took about 30 minutes, so thats £120 for 30 minutes work! I reckon they could do it a lot faster than me as my car was on the driveway on some blocks so access was quite tight
That's what I was trying to do with my 2016.5 CX-5 Sport, but the local dealer keeps dropping the ball, and now they've lost me as a customer. First, they rotated my non-directional tires front to back (which leads to noisy tires) instead of crossing the rears. Now, they've cancelled my next appointment I'd booked online, saying that "The slot was already taken. The online schedule is not 100%" Why the hell is the online scheduler even there when they just ignore it? Price wise, a full synth oil change at the dealer is $60 (not even sure they use OEM oil or Castrol), a tire rotation, which they failed to do properly last time, is $18. That's $78 total + driving to them for 25 minutes and back, waiting there for an hour or so. Proper supplies (Wix, Castrol, washer) to do it all myself at home are $38. Powertrain warranty will remain intact. So, in my case, DIY is logical.
I began changing my own oil after I provided my local dealership with full synthetic oil for an oil change and they lost 1 quart of it, and another time they didn't replace the oil fill cap. I took over from that point on.
Great video. Thankyou
