    • Video
Legendary Jazz musician Bud Powell was one of the creators of bebop. Now for the first time, biographer Peter Pullman tells Powell's rich story in full with Wail: The Life of Bud Powell. Peter discuss Bud Powell's story and the process of writing Wail. Joining Peter is music historian Francis Davis, author of Outcats, Bebop and Nothingness, and The History of the Blues.
Born in Harlem and educated in classical piano, Powell became a disciple of Thelonius Monk and an innovator in the world of mid-century New York City jazz while still only in his twenties. But his life was plagued by problems as well, and during his most productive musical years he was frequently institutionalized in Bellvue and other hospitals around New York. Now, drawing on never-before-seen documents, Pullman examines Powell's fraught life and brilliant career and brings his story to light once again.

Fascinating discussion about one of great, enigmatic figures of the jazz revolution known as Bebop.

I have to wonder if Altevia Edwards' son Johnny was in the audience during this chat with Mr. Pullman. It might explain why he handles the mention of "Buttercup" so gently despite nobody every saying anything positive about her or her involvement with Bud.

Great interview even though the interviewer seemed to focus more on Bud's mental health, behavior. .etc instead of this tremendous talent. Anyway, as long as it concerns African- American, you have to expect those negative point of views in order to look them down in America.

That being said, it's too bad the producers couldn't have included some African-American critics/scholars/historians in this event. Robin D.G. Kelly, Farah Jasmine Griffin, Stanley Crouch . . . certainly some good and important people could have been included here.
