@@owell179 Yessir! I used to work in logging, and the skidders would have Detroits in them, and you could definitely hear where ever they were at now! It's just like you said, you could hear them for miles. I love Detroits, they're a very tough diesel engine. They can take way more abuse than most others, and the more you make em scream with a good load, it's like the more they like it! They're made to scream, not just lug around.

ClassicTVMan1981X I thought they only used the fuel pinchers? There was a company called Fabco that made trucks for field harvesting that used this engine and the ford 390 or 391too
I have a 83 short bed reg cab Silverado in one of my barns that's 80% and I would like to put a Detroit 2stroke in it with twin stick tranny just for the hell of it. I have s-10s big block and small block strokers and ls turbo motors. Which are fun. But never had a screaming jimmy powered truck other than my dad's old semi.
That thing is Fuckin Bad-Ass, there ain't no body nowadays that will appreciate them ol' Jimmy's, there to busy whining about not knowing what bathroom to use! 😆👌
I don't see a spliter. Must be a 5 speed like the old macks. High gear reversed for an overdrive. Up against the dashboard. I drove a 1984 kenworth single bunk for TRL out of avoca pa. It had a 10 speed with 4and 5 9 and 10 reversed 400 hundred cat. That truck climbed tahachapi ca hill at 55 mph at 80,000. Topped out at maybe 85 mph. Best truck i ever drove.

You can get aluminium block 53s but I'd say they would be very rare these days. Look around you might get lucky. This pick up should does motor. A 4-53 can get 23 mpg towing a tri axle caravan.

I always wondered what a 3-71 would be like in a pickup, most say a 4-53 is a better choice.
The 371 is bigger by one cubic inch but I think the 4 cylinder could be better for high way use
