    I drive an XF automatic normally. Tomorrow I'm being trusted with a CF manual, 16 speed. Haven't needed to use the splitter before but now I know that I just have to use the clutch to engage the split gear, not take it out and put it back in gear with the splitter on. Thanks for this vid, I hope it helps me on the road!

    Quick question: At around 3:15 when you are downshifting, are you keeping the clutch depressed all the time or are you letting it up between every shift?

      I just watched the video. You showed two different transmissions. One had Reverse on the bottom left, and the other one had reverse on the top left. Are you trying to confuse us? Also I noticed that you did a lot of skip shifting. I never do that on an 18 speed crash box unless I am going down hill or bob tailing. All of our heavy trucks in North America pull much heavier loads than in Europe and have double drive axles. Our manuals are all non synchro transmissions. They tried synchros a few years ago but the drivers hated them and they are no longer available in heavy trucks. Just to much payload and they all got destroyed.

    • @toomuch9762
      @toomuch9762 Před 5 lety

      Doug Stern well thats lies anyway. Most trucks now are automatic or have synchro gear boxes. Even the American brands are now making autos. Double clutching went out with the dinosaurs. Like anything new synchro boxes struggled with torque at first but not anymore. No new trucks today are being made with non synchro gear boxes 😂 besides Americans cant drive unless its a straight line

    • @MerlynAStern
      @MerlynAStern Před 5 lety +1

      too much You don't know what you are talking about. All students here in North America driving the new 18 speed non-snchro transmissions are taught to double clutch. New heavy trucks in North American are now non-synchro. They tried synchro transmissions years ago. Our trucks are away too heavy for synchro boxes. There are none today, except in light 5 and 10 ton trucks. However you are right re non manual transmissions. They are dumming down the industry in a desperate attempt to get more drivers. BTW, these transmissions are NOT called automatics. They are manual transmissions with a normal clutch, but are shifted by a computer, because very few people have the skill today to drive a real truck. It costs too much to train them and it is cheaper to just put automated manuals in trucks these days. I've been in the industry for 44 years and am appalled at many of the drivers today who too often are incompetent.

    • @petarmiletic997
      @petarmiletic997 Před 5 lety

      @@MerlynAStern As an european I'm curious to know what's the total mass of the truck + trailer fully loaded. Here the weight limit is 40 metric tons in most states, 44 t in some countries, and 65t, I think, in Sweden. I have read that the federal combined weight limit is 80 000lb = 36 000 kg(36t). That is less than european trucks. Does the federal limit apply to all states or do some have higher limits ?
      Here most trucks made since 1990 or so had syncro boxes, and 95% of new trucks in the past 10 years are automated manual.

    I will watch the video in a moment, but that shift pattern looks like our standard 18 speed that I am very familiar with. Driven lots of them. You can split all low range gears and all the top 4 high range gears. We shift without using the clutch and if you are a 43 year veteran like me you shift with two fingers just like butter. It is called rev matching. On the other hand, our green drivers double clutch and grind like crazy. Quite funny to watch. OK now time to see the video. Can't wait....

    Do any of DAF's at your company have 12 speed box's? because I know you can get them in DAF now as well, and were you loaded? I always found gear's on DAF a bit short so I would usually start with 3L and go straight to 4H, or from 3H to 5L and then select gear by gear without using the splitter as far the last gear but the load weight's wouldnt be great;) and have you ever tried to reverse with the highest Reverse gear on?I've tried once in a Volvo rigid which was 8 speed, mad stuff:D

    i prefer the xf95 over the xf105 because in the 105 the stick is angled forward which means you have to reach further forward to change gears as where in the 95 the stick is straight up and is right beside your armrest and easier to reach.

I'm also curious about the ZF 8 and 9 speed so as the volvo 12 speed, scs forum picture for ets2 is not that accurate because they all have N position between 1 and 2 which you only need to push forward or back for those two positions.........

    someone have started with auto boxes in usa also, i dont remember whic manufactor. but they call it auto-shift :) they still got some way to go, to make them alot better, our autoboxes choose the gears very intelligent after the conditions we have. To see how they make the autoboxes and the development will be interresting :) what i dont understand is american trucks have a distinct whining in the cabin, tha auto-shift had it even it wasnt a automatic, a special sound :)

    Pat,
    Do you have to double-clutch between each shift?

      D. G. This transmission is synchronized, so you use the clutch like in a passenger car, double clutching is for un-synchronized transmissions, like the American Eaton Fuller Road Rangers, though experienced drivers (like myself) float (shift without the clutch)

    i drove a mercedes earlier, i put it in reverse and pulled the joystick too many times when i had the pedal to the floor when i was going backwards a narrow bridge in downhill, cause the car wouldnt wait at the meeting place on the top. so it jumped in highest reverse gear. it was a rigid truck with a trailer, and thank god i was used to drive under container and use reverse a lot :) that was mad, i expected normal speed and not 40 km pr hour!!!!! :D

    i dont know...maybe because it is more easy to use...here in europe for the moment it is the auto boxes for original and the manual for option...nearly 75% of the new trucks are now with autoboxes
    have a good weekend

    Hey i have Q.
    Is possible to go example :7h-8h or you first need 7h-8l-8h?

      no problem....it is up to you...you must feel how it s better....it is manual,you have to find your self the best gear,it depends how is the %of the hill,how you are loaded,how fast you are......if you start with truck and.if the road go down you can forget some gears,if the road climb you must use more
      have a good weekend

      In my Renault G260 I used the 7h-8l-8h at high speeds (which makes it effectively 14-15-16 sequence), 'cos the box is, crawlers included, an 18-speed box. The top gear was thus actually 18th. Top speed 115-120 km/h, depending on gross weight. Truck was heavy 'cos the cargo room was insulated against the worst freezing conditions.
