- It's been a good few years since Gerber released the Strongarm. With price increases, and quality lacking, its time we discuss whether or not this knife is still worth it in the year 2022 with all other competitive options existing.

You see any of these torture tests by JOE X?? The Strongarm faired much better then all these so-called high end steel blades. As far as durability and for an all around beater blade and for survival Strongarm is being proved to be an excellent choice. Now Gerber needs to be smart and not greedy to keep the price reasonable.
This kid is a “knife reviewer”, which is codename for somebody who doesn’t use his shit and talks out of his ass.
Those Essees and Beckers break twice as easy as the strongarm.
You can tell he’s not using his knives - they’re all in new condition.
Heat treatment is the key to a strong blade ... You can have the best steel, if not heat treated properly it will suk.
I agree. Gerber twin Prodigy on clearance at Walmart for $21.
Joe x abuses knives until they break, the strong arm was the strongest knife he tested. He would break Beckers in about half the time.
The strong arm proved stronger than the esee 5 which is much stronger than the 4, so your claim that the 4 is stronger than the strong arm is just wrong.
@@marty1685 okay
Let's see you put them to the test with that durability that you speak of
He definitely hasn't used that one. Watch Joe X.
Its pretty clean for 8 years of use?
Put them thru there paces the strongarm will outwork the ESEE, ESEE will break before the strongarm.
Stop smoking crack.
Nice practical and economic knife
Got mine today, October 2022 for 29.99
Dicks had the wrong price and had to honor that 😆
Lmao this dude here 🤣
Heat treatment is the key to a strong blade ... You can have the best steel, if not heat treated properly it will suk.
Both knives put to a really hard use test will fail where the Strongarm won’t. After a few cosmetic adjustments you can make the strongarm an easy to use, easy to sharpen, super strong knife. On top of that you can use it in wet conditions and it won’t rust. In a life and death situation and needed a knife that I’d bet my life on, it would be the Terava Puukko140, apo1s by survivor Lilly, the strongarm and one folder the 4 max scout! You could pretty much throw anything at them and they will survive along with yourself!
Bk18kbar is a good knife for the price but is much weaker than the strong arm withouta doubt...
I live in Europe ... and here is different price points, Strongarm today is one of the best. Strongarm is 90 dollar, BK18 is 180, Esse 4 is 190 ... so these two double price. One compare, same price is a Mora Garberg.
was just literally thinking about this knife.
I don't mind the Strongarm. I have the grey BDZ1 version. It was an Amazon exclusive. It holds an edge a little better than the 420HC on the regular version. That being said, I have many other better knives, so haven't used it in years now.
My man and his strongarm.
I respect the quality on some US made products, however, US isn't the only place on Earth that makes quality knives. TRC Mille Cuori is a great example on the high-end level of knives. On the budget Bushcraft line, again, Europe has the lead. On Kitchen knives, Japan and Germany make the best and so on. Also, overbuilt, doesn't mean better. In most cases an overbuilt knife, is the knife that will eat dust in a drawer, being only a show piece to make you young friends say "WOW, what a beast!" but that's that. In real life, you need a simple tool, a knife that cuts and slices that can also be carried.
Nowadays a lot of the fake Gerber Strongarm sell on internet , is really confused the buyers those are the Gerber’s fans !
I don’t care for gerber but I carry a strong arm all the time. Served me well for over 5 years with zero issues.
Fair enough
@@AlaskanFrontier1 I did accidentally cut my entire thumb off with it last year trying to gut what I thought was a deer after huffing an entire can of hair spray. It was not a deer and I got in to very bad trouble with what some would call “the police”.
Pretty sure Gerber is using American 420 HC. It's a spec, like D2, so other countries can make it. Proprietary steels, like S35VN or Vanax, are country/manufacturer specific. I don't think it would make sense for Gerber to import Chinese 420 when you can get it domestically. Maybe it's cheaper, but I doubt it...
Im definitely a fan and own several bought my first one new and then over time found several for twenty to thirty dollars at pawnshops and figured id thank my self later on. There probably best full tang knife for the money my opinion
Maybe do a Gerber Strongarm destruction video?
Joe X did a great destruction video on the Strongarm. czcams.com/video/ZDnxusCXV4M/video.html He's done dozens of these destruction tests on different knives and the Strongarm scored at the top of the list.. He called it "an amazing knife".
Impossible
You’re talking a lot about the knife but it’s still in perfect out of the box shape. I’d appreciate a video where you’re actually use the knife and share your opinions.
Why don’t you watch the videos where I “actually use the knife”?!?!?!?!
@@AlaskanFrontier1 Leading scientists have found that there is a strong correlation between a backseat survivor mentality and the alternating use of question and exclamation marks. The more of these are used, the more pronounced the "I'm talking about purely theoretical scenarios in nature in the warmth of my living room" behavior is.
@@outdoor7467 bud one of my most watched videos is me using this knife outdoors in comparison with the SRK I don’t know what the hell you are talking about.
With 21 years experience in the military I would not call the BK18 a combat knife. Combat/fighting knives for the past 300 - 400 years have a drop point or clip point, at least in the European style. This statement, of course, does not include daggers which is considered a different style hence the different name. Also, the BK18 does not have a guard which all fighting knives have. Even the SRK has a half guard. However I do agree there are better knives to be had at the current price of the Strongarm.
8 years ?
That knife doesn't even look dirty .
Maybe it's the lighting .
Right. This guy looks like he just pulled it out of the box. He has it in for Gerber for some reason. He also says 420HC is a Chinese steel. I don't know where he got that info. I think he's mad at Gerber because they didn't give him free stuff. He's definitely butt hurt.
There’s a difference between ‘full tang’ and ‘exposed tang’.
For me, the only true ‘full tang’ knife is one that you can see all the way to the pommel.
asif you know much about tactical use lad
No Bias here ...lol !!
Ok so you sound way less bitter in this video lol… and I agree with you for the most part in this video. I’d have to get the essee(?) but I have the bk18 and I really like that knife too.
I like the big flat belly on the bk and the ergonomics are fantastic. But I find the big belly makes it more of a specialized tool, where the more generic profile and that extra little bit of length on the strongarm makes it a better general use tool.
You say this knife uses cheap Chinese steel. How do you know for sure? Did you contact Gerber to see if they source their 420HC steel from China? Maybe they get theirs from Latrobe here in the U.S. like several other knife companies that use 420HC.
He doesn’t know anything. They get their steel from Niagara specialty steels over on the east coast. American made.
@@hunterglaspell thanks for the info. I was pretty sure they got their steel here in the U.S. but I wasn’t for sure who it was from
He doesn't know what he's talking about lmfao. Needs to take some nasal medicine
Wherever they got this steel, it’s softer than dogshit. Gets dull fast.
Where are you getting you data on "Chinese made" steel? I would love for you to identify your source. There are many companies in the US that make 420HC, along with other steel as well. Stating that something is cheaply made in China w/o backing it up is a . . . cheap.
I commented the same thing 420hc was created at latrobe wich is in Pennsylvania, USA they wouldnt be able to say made in USA if the entire knife steel was made in china. This dude is a clown
You're talking about 'properly ground'. The Gerber is very likely stronger that any of the knives you compared it to...which to me are more bushcraft than tactical. I've had mine for about 6 years and have put it through hell and it held up perfectly. I even used it in a pinch to change OFF a motorcycle tire! I would bet real money that none of those other knives would have handled that. It is daily a farm tool...typically used as a knife 🙂and a chopper. It would be my goto knife...and I have many...if I could only choose one.
No, it is finished exactly the way it is supposed to be...tactical all the way from the Strong blade to the window breaker.
You took the words right out of my mouth glad I read the comments first 😂
The Strongarm is a combat knife not a bushcraft knife I hate it when people compare the two🤨
420 is a chinese steel?
Not really, its an american steel, and in the 420 HC its a good steel, at least for Budget knives
Your absolutely right about this knife. I bought both the the black and coyote brown many a years ago for about maybe $45 bucks at the time. It was the “Made in the USA” that caught my eye. Yep being made 420 hc ,, yea ,, it’s a good knife , not a great knife , but it gets the job done. Yes I’ve seen the price of these go up and yes you can get a much better blade and steel for the price now . Me , myself I’m a
Ka-bar / Becker fan . My Becker BK 7,&9 and even 2 are my favorites 👍👍great video
It's $120-$150 in the UK for some reason.
Do you do any research before you post videos? Cause if you do it doesn’t show
Never
The first video I watched I was intrigued, was pleased with presentation. But was surprised by your follow up on metallurgy, good.but irrelevant to purpose and function of the blade.Combat driven, with cost efficiency in mind, not Bushcraft or cosmetic bias. It's usefulness in a survival scenario,if only once keeps you alive served it's purpose.
Hmm
Your very pragmatic about your views on certain knives that's ok,your opinion,I myself find skill supercedes any opinion, yes like ammo you need shot placement,A 22 can take out large game with shot placement and hunting skills,as will a 308,but both rounds have their purpose just as knives do.Any idiot can slice cheese,And you don't need a 300 dollar blade to do it,just sharpen a butter knife on a rock heat treat by fire and make a quench from cup of water ta da.
420 isnt a chinese steel
That was gonna be my question. Thanks for clearing that up. It was also my understanding that the steel is American.
No way in hell that knifes been used for 8 years. Also 420HC is an American steel. I don't buy Chinese knives.
You know it!!
By the condition of the coasting and the blade itself it seems that throughout 8 years you used it ratjer little. Does it sound like a relevant review by a relevant user? Doubt it...
Looks like you’ve NEVER used this thing…so this video means nothing to me
Not hating on the maker of this vid, but this comment has a point. Not sure if you’ve had and used others strongarms in past too gain opinion on it. But that particular blade doesn’t look to have any experience on it.🤷♂️
The Strongarm is a combat knife those other knives are not🤨
What beautiful bass voice you have, please go and do voice training for singing..you will become someone great!
That is the move
I don’t know why everyone is quoting this knife at $80. I’m finding it for $40-$60
Because it is
😂
Doh!!!
eBay sells a knock off of the strong arm...but I have a feeling it's the same thing as gerber.
You are right. I bought this knife in 2020 and Is a big peace os steel. Not a good knife. The edge is terrible.
Ahaha thanks for the feedback
Are you even qualified to talk about any knive ? Only military vets who used them are !
Don't know what you're talking about lol "Chinese steel" get out of here bro. What a waste of time.
just say you like the other knifes better , and stop talking BS about the strongarm
