This movie was actually based on the work of scientists at NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory. The long-term goal of putting multiple instruments in the path of a tornado was met in southeast Wyoming, during the NOAA- and National Science Foundation-funded experiment known as VORTEX2, in 2009. So it took scientists 13 years to achieve what happened in Twister.

George, the Cone of Silence the character was referring to was from the 60's TV show Get Smart. A spy spoof. • @timhibbard4226
      @timhibbard4226 Před rokem +12

I love Get Smart, but “cone of silence” has a bunch of meanings and one of them is indeed specific to tornados, storms in general actually.
I don’t understand all of the specifics of it, but basically storms can mess with Doppler radar sites when they are too close to them. It makes it hard or impossible for the radar to gather accurate data. Which creates a large scary looking black hole on the Doppler screen and meteorologists have taken to terming the phenomenon the “cone of silence”.

I think the Doppler radar blind spot at the center is simply that there is too much junk too high off the ground (trees and buildings) that the Doppler radar signal bounces off of them and creates meaningless data. The nearby ground itself also returns junk data.
That data may mask what's really happening further out because of multiple reflections of the nearby ground and junk. So, to eliminate confusion and to not mask what's happening further out, the system basically just ignores the data from inside a specified radius and draws a blank circle where all this spurious data appears.
It's essentially a cone of meaningless information.

Is it because a wooden structure is cheaper?
Wouldn't it be cheaper in the long run to build a house sturdy enough to withstand any tornado?
I'm from Germany and while we also have a lot of wooden structures mostly in the south of the country, most buildings are made from concrete and stone bricks.
That includes your regular, nothing-fancy, average home.
A tornado couldn't do anything to the house I grew up in... all the walls were between 2 and 3 feet of concrete and bricks.

When I was a young 'un I lived through the 'Storm of the Century' in April of '74 when it came through north Alabama (148 tornadoes confirmed in 13 U.S. states AND the Canadian province of Ontario!). I think we had around 10 tornadoes come through in one night. Luckily they didn't hit our house but others weren't so lucky. I went out with friends and helped clean up a few days later and it was a mess. Speaking of cows, another tornado that came through maybe 10 years later hit an elementary school that was across the street from a dairy farm and they found cows that had been killed by debris - including pens and pencils - that the tornado turned into projectiles. The mom of one of my co-workers got picked up in her car and the tornado dropped the car on a bunch of power lines but, luckily, the power had already been knocked out so she was okay, other than being very shooken up (and she was in her 60's at the time). And another friend of mine went down in their basement with their family and when they came out about 15 minutes later, their house was gone. With climate change, we're seeing them come through at weird times and not just in Spring/Summer. Hell, even in Manzanita, Oregon, just south of Cannon Beach, one came through in December a few years ago and went right up the main drag (and there's only one main street with almost all the shops and restaurants). This movie was fun to see in theaters, and there was some news recently that there's a sequel in the works, I think. Also RIP Bill Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Too sad that they're both gone.

There's no evidence that so-called global warming is causing an uptick in the number of tornadoes. However, the technology to detect them has improved greatly, so weather organizations are better able to both predict them and give warning, as well as identify them even when they fail to touch down. Back in the 1970's when Doppler rader was in its infancy (speaking from experience living not more than 15 miles from the F5 Xenia tornado, the largest ever recorded at the time), at that time there was only one date on the weather calendar of recorded American history that had never experienced a tornado somewhere in the lower 48 states: January 17th.
It's not like they're all that rare here--all you need is the right combination of warm and cold air. North America is more suseptible than most areas of the world because of our generally temperate climate, proximity to weather systems born in both the northern latitudes and warm tropical water, and the size of our land mass that enables large thunderstorms to develop powerful storms.

My sister literally has it memorized and it's the reason why she's a legit storm chasing photographer now in her 20s with NWS certifications through SkyWarn and Spotter Network. If you've ever heard a NOAA weather radio broadcast say "Spotter activation may be necessary", that's what/who it's talking about.
She actually reads meteorology textbooks _for fun,_ so she's taken it WAY further than I ever have which I think is awesome (can you tell I'm proud of her?). The only thing that kept her from becoming a meteorologist was the advanced math required for forecasting since she has dyscalculia (dyslexia with numbers). Whenever she brings up terminology I don't know I'll tell her "That term. Educate me." and she'll info-dump about it. lol
We both have advanced radar apps on our phones (albeit she has more features unlocked in hers because of being part of Spotter Network) and during the season we'll text each other screenshots of supercells _in other states_ just to say oooooh look at this!!
    Because we are nerds.
I'm really hoping to join her on a chase this spring, too, so I can drive and she can safely take pictures out the window.

Tornadoes can be stationary or can move across the ground clocked over 90 mph. Wind speeds can go from 60 mph to 318 (measured by mobile Doppler radar in Moore, OK in 1999.). Most tornadoes are 50 ft wide, but can be 2.6 miles wide. They can occur any time conditions are favorable to severe thunderstorms, day or night, any season. They can be solitary, come in families, or drop hundreds in an outbreak.

For the curious, a not as well known F5 was in Jarrell, Texas in 1997. Actually it was an outbreak of tornados (like in the movie) but the worse hit Jarrell because the tornado moved strangely slow- it lasted 13 minutes, got up to 3/4 mile wide and, at times, moved 5 - 10 mph which means the tornado kinda sat on some areas and just grinded them into dust.
Tore asphalt from the road, yanked the houses from foundations and then tore the foundations out too. Skinned cows. And while gale force winds are terrifying, the real danger in tornados is the debris they pick up and slam into other things. Things like wooden posts being driven thru metal, flying cars etc
It's kind of amazing how powerful storms can get

Read a fun fact a few years ago that there are actually more tornadoes in the UK per year than in the USA, but the American ones are much, much, much bigger (even the little ones).

@@philmordecai oh we get crazy weather for sure, just last year a storm tor up half the trees where I live, but we don't get full on twisters like in the US because there isn't enough land for them to build up speed

I'm so glad you can see it from the fiancee's point of view. I feel like so many reactors don't really care that Bill Paxton's character basically went back with his ex in front of his fiancee.

This film was inspired by storm chasers and this film inspired storm chasers. The ideology behind the technical instrument's is spot on and still used today.
Bill Paxton was taken from us way too early, he has never played a boring character, no matter how small. When he passed, storm chasers spelt out his name via geotags in tornado alley across America.

Watching the behind the scenes on how they made Twister, and it genuinely is incredible how they actually did the effects for this film considering they had to practically invent new CGI technology and techniques to create the twisters.
Plus the bit with the house. When it rolls onto the road it's CGI but for the truck smashing through it, they actually built enough of a house for the truck to drive through.

I'll never forget, the tornados that hit in April of 2011. I live in Alabama and it was one of the hardest hit states during that outbreak. The string of tornados lasted over 3 days, I want to say there were like 350 tornados over the course of the outbreak and a few of them were EF5 tornados. It was absolutely terrifying. Over 300 fatalities, over 10 billion dollars in damage. I remember my brother rushed home to pick me up and bring me to a shelter and one of the tornados was literally going right over our heads. Somebody's barn roof landed in a field beside us as we were leaving our house. It was definitely an experience that will stick with me forever, and I now have a major fear of tornados

To answer another question, tornados and hurricanes are two different kinds of storms. Tornados form over land and are relatively small, even F5's in comparison to hurricanes because travelling over land actually wears them down and makes them smaller. But hurricanes form over oceans/seas, and are so massive that you never actually see the cyclone, you just feel the wind itself when one side of the hurricane hits land.

Bill Paxton was such a talent. Brought life to every character he played and was such a down to earth and cool guy in real life. Such a loss. RIP.
I highly recommend the “let there be rock” podcast where he was a guest. The host of that podcast and him go way back and their relationship is awesome. Bill Paxton is such an unsung hero of so many films.
