    It looks gorgeous! I’ve just completed the same job and am only just watching videos on it now. Yes, I agree, removing the grips and staples is an enormous job. I’ve done the whole job by myself and today I finally get to remove the masking tape. Your stairs look absolutely gorgeous!! Wow! Thank you for sharing your process.

      You're too kind! I'm sure your staircase must look amazing as well! My god removing staples... I think only people who have been through it can really understand, right? ;)

    This is a great video! Thank you for sharing. I’m in the process of painting my stairs and railing, and you are so right about the staples. They are soul crushing at times. Love the video format too! Great job!

      Kimberly Davis awwww thank you so much Kimberly! You made my day! I’m so glad the video is helping! And yes, the blooooody staples, I actually ended up with a blister on my thumb by the end of it, but 2 months later we are still very happy we did it!

      Claire Imaginarium it looks so much better than the carpet that was on there. I’ve been trying to gently peek under the carpet that the builder installed on my stairs just to see what I might be dealing with. I’m seeing a lot of construction mess that will have to be dealt with if I’m going to try salvaging what’s there and paint the treads.

      The great thing with paint is that if you change your mind on the colour, you can just repaint over it! :)

  • @lesliekendall2206
    @lesliekendall2206 Před 3 lety

    I'm opting to paint the stairs after removing the carpet because I'm in a 1910 bungalow and the stairs were previously painted on the sides with a (of course removed) runner up the middle and I'm not interested in disturbing lead based paint. Another thing I plan to do, since we're getting older and also visitors always seem to miss the last step because of the dark cedar hardwood floor at the bottom that "blends in" making it hard to see, is painting about an inch of the tread front edge with the white riser color. Should also make the look of the stairs from above more interesting. Right now I'm in the wood putty stage.

    Great video. I did the same job and it took me 20 hours to prep the stairs they where so bad. Loads of glue, gripper rod holes, staple holes. In one case a stair tread was completely split so had to get underneath and reinforce it. Like you said, soul destroying. I used car body filler to repair holes and imperfections. Sets hard and sandable in 15 mins. The end results of a job like this is worth it though 👌

    Looks great, I think one more way to clean it up a bit more is adding a strip of pre painted white quarter round where the tread meets the riser. Just gives it a nice straight line at the back instead of a kind of blotch line where the white meets the stain.

    Ps use Frog Tape to keep the edges clean!

      Hi, sorry just seeing your comment now! I'd say the longest was removing the carpet and the staples and that was probably around 5 hours of work. Then painting takes a little while as you have to wait between in each layer. Overall it wasn't full days, but because the tasks are quite physical it is very tiring. I hope it helps!

    • @claireimaginarium
      @claireimaginarium  Před 4 lety +1

      Ha! Great question! I've actually worked around my cat's nap times (#crazycatladyclub)! You'll notice that they usually sleep around the same time each day, so start when they are settled, and they are light enough that they won't damage the paint if it's touch-dry (about 30/40 minutes later). Good luck!

      Hi, sorry just seeing your comment now! Our stairs have a bit of texture so we didn't have to add anything as they weren't very slippery to begin with. F&B floor paint has a slight satin finish so again it isn't as slippery as a gloss finish paint. Staples are the worst part! :( Good luck, I'm sure it'll turn out great!

    It looks nice but I don't think it last for a long period of time, because once the paint starts peeling the stair boards starts cracking and peeling so quick, it is a thin piece of subfloor board

    • @claireimaginarium
      @claireimaginarium  Před 4 lety +11

      Thanks for the constructive comment, I guess? Too late, the ugly carpet is long gone! :) In French, we say "you should never comment on one's taste in colour and food", because everyone is different and what one may like another may not, and it is not polite to tell the person. So if you prefer the carpet that's cool, but maybe be kind enough to not tell someone you don't know that you find their taste 'ugly' because that's a bit rude. You wouldn't say that to a friend or family member if you were visiting their house, would you? Let's make the internet a more respectful and kinder place shall we? :)
