- Hey everybody! In todays video, I am sharing how I alter my store bought pants to fix a waist gap. I know MANY people have this same pants issue, so I hope this video will be helpful. This is the way I like to do it, but know its several other ways to fix a waist gap. Be sure to practice on an old pair before cutting into a new pair of pants if you've never done this.
Thank you so much for watching! Be sure to LIKE, COMMENT, SUBSCRIBE, and SHARE.

I almost cried over this video. I'm 43 and Ive had this problem since I entered my 30s and lost my high school tomboy figure. My whole family struggles with the big thighs, bubble bum with the tiny waist problem and we are SO TIRED OF BELTS. ALL THE TIME WITH THE BELTS. Summer is miserable, finding shorts is worse than shaving my legs after a long winter. Well, I decided this shape isn't leaving me any time soon, so I should try and learn this terrifying process of buying up and sewing down. I allowed myself time to really research to do it right, because once my sisters find out I can do this, I will be getting trash bags full of bottoms to size down. I'm new to sewing and have made the ever popular masks, quilts and lots of things that require straight lines, but nothing this complicated ever. However, I owed it to myself and my sisters to learn. Ill fitting pants make us feel ugly, out of step with the popular crowd and unable to buy nice pants 'because they will never fit right'. Not only do I feel like I have found My People, but you made the process of loving my own body through tailoring, look effortless. For that, I will be forever grateful. For you, it may be a small thing you do every day, but for someone like me, the idea of feeling flawless like a rock star in pants without a belt is....beyond my wildest dreams. Thank you for being you and teaching me to love my curves and dress for them not to hide them.
“Struggles with big thighs, bubble bum and tiny waist” struggling you say?😂
you wouldn't be struggling, I adore that and so does the world, sometimes fishing for attention lmao
@@InterstellarCloudd there's no need to be mean ? it might be the beauty standard these days but it's impossible to find anything that fits and they explained that perfectly, when clothes don't fit, it doesn't matter that you're in the beauty standards, nothing flatters your shape and you end up feeling ugly. also it's the beauty standards these days but it wasn't ten years ago, it always fluctuates
I get what you're saying and I don't have a judgemental comment for you, like the others. It's hard to get clothes to fit.
I don't worry that other people like my body type; I am just trying to find some damn pants that fit and not having to wear a belt with every outfit.
Ah, the skinny jean shimmy. My whole life is encapsulated in this video. Big hips, little waist, no idea from clothing manufacturers about the realities of women's bodies. Thanks!
@Kimberely Dienhart wtf
@@ashleighbennett2823 it's a scam lol, they're both bot accounts
Meticulous alterations are a treasure! Thank you for sharing this complex process -I will never complain about the cost of good tailoring again👍🏽🤗
Thanks! I have tried so many things to rig up my pants. I used to shop like crazy in hopes of finding my "miracle pair." Now I have resorted to watching every pant-tailoring video. I learn something valuable from every video--yours is so thorough!
Curvy bottoms unite! Brittany you do a wonderful job demonstrating the steps, sharing what is important to watch out for and how to remedy common problems. I always wondered how to finish the waist band so the stitching doesn't show on the outside. Now I feel like a real seamstress because I can "stich in a ditch."
Pretty much every pair of pants I own gap in the back thanks to my big round bottom and smallish waist. Looks like I'll be spending most of this weekend mending my gaps. My friends, family and many strangers will be forever grateful that you've saved them from potentially terrifying sightings of my undergarments and bottom.
Thank you for this thorough explanation. I have the same issue with store bought pants. This will come in very handy!
Up till now, I've just been adding belt loops to my pants, but then I still have to deal with the excess fabric all bunched up in the back. I'm def going to try this... thank you for the tutorial
This is EXACTLY why I make my pants. I have to do the exact same thing in my RTW pants but it is because of my sway back. A lot of work, but well worth it. Great video Brittany.
Love this! I absolutely need this alteration for most ready-to-wear pants. It's the most frustrating experience to buy pants that fit my hips and thighs, but leave that fist-sized gap at the waist. It was nice to get some tips for handling this type of fabric, too. I sometimes get to the middle of adjusting something, hit a snag and then I'm not confident enough to continue.
This is just in time! I'm buying more and more things on the the internet without the benefit of trying them on in store. This helps tremendously.
I just love how clear and concise your explanations are, thank you so much!!!
Hi. Just adjusted my very first pair of pants by using the steps in your video. Worked great! Thank you! Very well done.
Thank you Britany 🌼 Glad to hear from you. I’m looking forward to seeing your next tutorials and projects. Peace and blessings ✨
I’m so glad you mentioned the other options as well. Thanks for that. I’m altering pants, but I wasn’t sure if I could take out the excess on the side seams.
You explained this so clearly unlike so many other videos. Thank you for also explaining the different options of taking in pants. Such a helpful video!
Hi! It's good to see you I pray you and your family are blessed and doing well. I miss the sew a longs.
This has been so helpful!!! Thank you for sharing your skills!!!! You've just changed the game for me!
Beautiful work! I love how meticulous you are and how you are so good at explaining all the steps. Thank you so much for sharing your skills and knowledge!
Love your teaching skills!! You truly inspire me!
Brittany, thank you for addressing this problem, that so many real women have. Please keeping these real videos coming.
What a great tutorial!!!! You make it look so easy, takes a lot of patience! Just found you as I am getting ready to begin sewing. I’ve always had a difficult time with pants fitting right so I’m wanting a pattern designed just for me! I am tall, thin with no butt, so in store bought clothing I am size 10 top but size 6 slim long pants. Love your upbeat happy personality!
Brilliant job, you explain so well. I love your videos, Thanks Brittany
Your explanation was the simplest way of making these adjustments. Now I have the confidence to adjust 2 pants I just purchased. Thank you. I'll see you soon.
Hi Brittany! Can't wait to follow this guide for my slacks that are very similar to yours. Thank you for this! ❤
This is so helpful!! Thank you for this!! Going to give it a try on old pants first, then do it on my new pants that are perfect but definitely not made for anyone with a butt.
Hi it's great to hear and see a video from you I'm praying all is well with your family. Thanks for this video I'm a well endowed glamma and it's just in time for pants wearing season.
Great video, very concise and easy to follow. I too have this issue, thank you for this!
Brittany I've been waiting on this video!!! Thank you!!🤗
Your instructions make this so approachable! I'm still feeling a bit overwhelmed, but at least I'm no longer intimidated. Great channel!
Hi Brittany, I came across your video on Pinterest and i must say you outdid yourself. I'll be applying these techniques in my alteration projects coz I have similar issues to yours🙏
Lovely clear and precise presentation. Thank you. 💕
Thank you! Doing this work today on a pair of dress pants today for my daughters friend!
How lovely ! Someone the same shape as me, same problem and now an answer. Thankyou 🙂
Waist 36 n hips 48, so yeah I be altering, very detailed. Thanks for sharing!!!
Very handy tutorial Brittany! It has helped me, thank you!
This video is so helpful! Definitely going to practice this method, I always always have this problem and it’s so annoying 🙃
This is so the story of my life! Thankyou. xx
This tutorial was so helpful. Am going to try it out and just subscribed. Thanks so much.👍
Fantastic tutorial. I always have this issue and so disheartening sometimes. But now there’s a solution. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I really do appreciate it.
Brittany, you are a great teacher! That stitch in the ditch part always gets me and makes my pants look like a mess in the end. Yours was really neat in the end. I think I am not pinning correctly, so it was nice to see how you did that.
I agree. U need to work on that too.
Thank you for this video! I usually have this same issue too.
I need this adjustment too. Thanks so much! I love hearing your children playing in the background.
Excellent job right down to the putting the labels on the pants. And thanks for reminding us we’ve got to shimmy😉
So happy to have this...thank you!
Thank you. Great job. Struggle with the same challenge. God bless you.
Spot on. Great tutorial.
You did such a good job... now I'll go try mine!!!!
For people who are new to this alteration I recommend putting a chalk mark at the point on the butt where the end point of your alteration should be. Regardless of which way you choose to do the alteration this will help you. Everyones butt is different :).
Butts are kinda like snowflakes. No two are the same! 👍
How can you tell this?
Thank you kindly for this video. Your teaching style is friendly and easy to follow. I am curious though why you put the labels back in.
Thank you so much. I am very excited to see this in a video, cause I am very familiar with that little shimmy-wiggle. Now I feel like I can do this.
Best tutorial on this problem I’ve seen. Thank you 😍😍😍😍
Oh wow! Thank you! Glad it was helpful ❤️
Hi Brittany!! Wonderful vlog.. What a great tutorial for taking in pants.. Thanks, I deeply appreciate this....
💜💜💜🧵🧵🧵
Thank you for the clear and easy to follow instructions. I have several pants that i need to alter and am confident I can do it now.
Would this decrease the hip width as well?
Sooo needed this. Thanks a lot!!
I loved seeing this alteration. How do you do this on patterns? I have this problem when making my pants also. I would love to see how to correct this on sewing patterns.
Hi Brittany, great video, the pants look great on you.
I was looking for ideas on how to help prevent or fix holes in regular pants (not jeans) for my daughter and this video caught my eye. The before and after, WOW!
I think my entire family has this problem. You made it look so effortless and the time you took to show what could happen and added what should happen was key for me!
You are a God sent for me and my family. I don't consider myself a great sower by far, but this (because of this video) I can do.
Blessings to you and your family for a prosperous 2024 in every area of life.
I just had to subscribe!
Thanks for detailed fixing
Thank you... thank you... & thank you again...I love the fact that your sooooo detailed & you don’t know how much that works for individuals well for me anyway...Would it be asking to much of you to do a detail drafting of a basic bodice for full bust women?....I don’t want to buy a pattern...I want to be able to draft the bodice from scratch if it is at all feasible...Thanking you in advance...!¡!♥️🙏🏾
here because I also just bought pants from Target for the first time and the waist gap is so disappointing.
Thanks for the video!
You’re welcome!! Thank you so much for watching! Hope it’ll be helpful❤️
Great video. This is a problem I usually have.
Oh man, I wish I knew how to do this (or even just a simpler version of it) when I was younger! I don't really wear pants anymore, I switched over almost entirely to skirts and dresses when I was around 16-17 and now I'm 23, but back when I used to wear jeans I always had this problem!
Thank you!!! You helped me realize an issue that I had with another pair a pants I adjusted where I actually made darts and they kind of poke out at the sides lol… good for future though
So timely for me, Brittany! I just bought a new pair of pants and the same old bugaboo has surfaced. I have tried this before, but it did not turn out as neat as yours. Now I can see how to take my time with each step. In these pants, the 1 1/2 inch waistband has elastic enclosed. How would I best approach altering the waistband in that situation?
Great job!
Hi Brittany, great tutorial please do more especially hems, btw what kind of machine do you sew with and what kind of walking foot is that, inquiring minds want to know,
That looks great, thank you!
Thank you for the video. I have just the opposite problem. Much more difficult, because I have to adjust almost everything. Large waist, small hips.
Roula...omg I have a quarantine waist line now...I’m working out to get back however it seems impossible...seeing my own clothes is the only way to go it seems...!¡!
Really enjoyed this. I do a lot of alterations.......and truly believe that the garment should “ put back together” with no indication it was ever altered.
Indeed there are several choice to make when reducing the waist area......it’s best to take the original natural lines and reduce each one and at the same time making them fit back together. Kind of like a puzzle.
🥰
Looking forward to your new project unveiling and the merchandise!
Great video! I used to need this type of adjustment, but I guess my waist grew into my hips-ha!
Thank you!! Excellent video.
Thank you very much madam your creative skill really helped me ...
thank you .... and God's richest blessing to you and your family.
This was so helpful thank you! 😁
Thanks Brittany!
You did a great job
Thank you,so easy to follow!!!
If I ever find a pair of pants that fit in the waist it is a miracle. I'll be honest, I do get lazy sometime and not make the alteration in this manner because I never tuck anything, lol...no one ever knows unless I am doing the alteration for someone...thank you so much
Nicely done!
Thank you for a great video 😁👌🏻
YOU ARE A GODSEND! Thank you!!!!
Thx Britt. I had to take in some pants for work and it fits 👍🏽😊
Great job
Thank you for helping
Thanks for showing how to fix the waistband after taking some bigness out.
Great tutorial Brittany. I have a rtw pants fit me that way for years.
If u r not explaining how long does this take you? This seems very time consuming. Thank u so much for sharing, very informational!
Thank you for this needed info. I have butt too and this is a problem I have too. Also with skirts? Do you?
Thank you, your video is so informative because it's exactly the problem I'm having with a pair of my pants. Now I know I can fix them thank you so much good video. Kathleen Pacific Northwest 🌲🕊️
❤❤❤ thanks hun ❤❤❤
Thank you so much Beautiful!!!
Love it
Thank you!
Would this method work for scrub bottoms as well??❤
This looks like a lot of work, but I really want to try it some day. I have over a 10 inch difference between my waist and hips, and nothing ever fits properly. Usually I end up with pants that are too tight in the hips while I try to strike some sort of balance.
Do you think this could work with a folded waistband rather than one with a facing??
Thannk you.
Really appreciate this. I'm plus size, but my waist is still smaller than my hips, so I always end up getting the next size up and have the dreaded waist gap!
Why don't you get the downsized, which fit your waist, and then just let out the side seams?
@@kimberleyjane2338 now that's a good idea problem is there is never enough seam 😂
I swear Fay. It's easier to just draft and sew your own pants. There are some great teachers out there. I just bought some very inexpensive NOT STRETCH wool blend at $9 meter. I use parchment paper to draw with pencil. When you are buying pants and doing all those adjustments anyway, you cant do it. The hardest part is getting the back bum and back crotch. Then later you can buy good quality stretch material, use your same pattern minus seam allowance. You got this!! I hate paying for patterns, because it's the same hard work as drafting your own.
Give it a try. I'm doing my first pair now!
@@kimberleyjane2338 I do sew some of my own clothes and have made trousers from a self drafter pattern. I need to make some more to get a good fit.
@@fay8233 You can do it! 🙂💚🇨🇦
Girllll I just gotta say you have one beautifully shaped body 😍 love the curves...work it! And to top that of you're talented as hell...loved the inspiration of alteration here, tysm for sharing!!
Very helpful
Great Job
Hey beautiful!Good job, by the way...
No a tailor altered my pants like that and it now it's tight all he needs to do was put two darts on either side
