  • Pete Fountain playing one of his signature songs and of course with that famous 'FAT' sound. The video was made in 1992. Enjoy!

A New Orleans legend. My folks and I had the pleasure to hang out with this man during a lunch at his restaurant during the 1984 World's Fair. It was a cold and overcast day...not very many people went to the Fair that day. We went to his place for lunch, and there was only one other group there. Pete and his band performed, and he hung out with the other group for a while, and then our little family. Hands down one of the best moments of my life...my dad and Pete Fountain trading stories.

Great jazz musician! Always let his accompaniment take solos without interrupting them. We will miss his clarinet and his personality.

I was the only kid in our South Bend, Indiana high school band who had a crystal mouthpiece. I wanted to be just like Pete! That was 1957. I still have the container it came in today. It was an Obrien and cost $12.99 then. I actually had two of them because I accidentally hit my tooth with it one day in band and found out how easily they chipped.

You and me both! He's the only famous clarinet player that has recorded all styles of music, dixie, coutry and western, pop, swing and with the symphony and all very good. It only took me about 35 years to duplicate his unmistakable tone.

To my knowledge he still plays a 4* O'Brien Glass mouthpiece today. The clarinet he plays is an older 15mm bore LeBlanc 1612G, the G stands for gold keys. The 1612 model LeBlanc has forked Bb and articulated G# keys. Your series 9 is also a 15mm bore clarinet and a very good clarinet, I used to own one years ago.
