A pure jewel inside black music's story
So well put I need not add anything here
I helped "sponsor "them.for a gig at CalArts in 1979..it was just after the ECM release "Nice Guys ".
They were almost always totally "On "at every concert i saw them at accept one gig at Symphony Space in NYC.
I asked Lester and Roscoe what was up w that ? They replied they were jet lagged and had to go from airport to the concert ..
Such was the life .
thank you so much for uploading, huge fan
With "The Art Ensemble of Chicago" every performance was a big event. I was good friends with some of the members. Lester was the most lovable person and Joseph and Famadou came to visit me at my home one time or another.
Saw them play in the early 80's in Reykjavik - I knew nothing about them then but found them absolutely Fantastic and it's one of the most memorable concert I've been to. After the concert I started to buy their albums and to this day "Full Force" on ECM is one of my all time favourite Jazz album.
Nice guys -ich liebe sie!
10:25 Lester! "it's not a doctor's coat, first of all, it's a lab coat..." "it stands for research, and I stand for research, so I wear the coat. I'm kind of a research trumpeter!"
Okay, this is what I was trying to tell this guy. The New Thing, probably more than any Jazz movement except Swing, needs to be seen LIVE. Notice that I use the present tense, because it's still alive!
They were one of my favorite groups in the 80s.
the closest i got to this was seeing world saxophone quartet plays hendrix in 2007. thanks for putting this up.
I often heard Joseph Jarmen and his ensemble at the Hyde Park Art Center in the late 60's. I was fascinated by their music; this was at the time I was just learning to play alto sax.
One of the great groups I always return to over the years.. liberation music... no rules... all the AACM stuff continues to inspire...
Pure brilliance and illumination!
I saw them and enjoyed them , here in Los Angeles, live, about 10 or 15 years ago, at Cal State LA.
You never know what's going to pop up on CZcams ... Thanks for this!
Such a treasure.
