  • Saving money when and where you can is important in this hobby. Here I show you my DIY recipes for an airbrush cleaning solution and an acrylic paint thinner. All you need is distilled water, IPA, window cleaner and glycerin in measured amounts plus a couple of plastic dispensers. I’ll walk you through it. I make mine in 250 ml batches and the basic supplies which cost approximately €10.00 will serve me for years!
    Price comparison:
    1 litre of commercial airbrush cleaner = €75.20
    1 litre of DIY airbrush cleaner = €4.00
    1 litre of commercial acrylic paint thinner = €69.75
    1 litre of DIY acrylic paint thinner = €3.50

    I use distilled water .95 L (1 quart), dishwasher rinse aid (6 drops) (in place of the alcohol) and glycerin (6 drops) for the thinner. It is safer for the grandkids to spray. I do the cleaning so your recipe will work well for that for me! Thank you!🚿

      @@gregory6488 I have. But the alcohol works better and my airbrush is safe to use it on (no rubber). If you have parts you think could be damaged the "safe" thinner is a great cleaner!

    One of the first things I did when I got back into model making and then the cars, was to look up home made recipes, exactly because of the cost. The ones I settled for are almost exactly similar to yours, though I use concentrated screen wash in the cleaner. They both work perfectly well.

    I've been running ammonia Windex through my brushes(H&S Infinity, Eclipse CS, Badger 150 and a Badger Renegade) for 10 to 30 years(in the badger 150) and never had a problem. I've even accidentally left it in the cup overnight on occasion.

    Nice share. This is basically same recipes I have used for many years now. The glycerine acts as a surface tension remover allowing the water and alcohol to mix as well as a flow improver. For cleaner Mix, I don’t use window cleaner but about 5- 10 ml household ammonia and the balance of your window cleaner volume is made up with water. If anyone is concerned about ammonia affecting their airbrush, just rinse through with water after cleaning. I have never had any dechroming, but I do only have Iwata and H&S brushes

    I seen a recipe for flow improver. The recipe was 32 oz of water 946ml and add half a teaspoon or 2.5 ml of dishwasher rinse aid. The woman's video I saw she use jet dry rinse aid. IPA in Australia is very expensive. A litre of 70% so you back about 20 bucks. I'm running if you can use the denatured alcohol which we called methylated spirits here. Which is 96% ethanol with a bit of methanol added to make it toxic. Cheers Graham.

    • @MapleLeafCustoms
      @MapleLeafCustoms  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Hi Graham. Excellent question, to which I don't know the answer. Different products are available around the world. All my research was done via CZcams videos, and there are a myriad of recipes out there. Mine is made with what seems to be the standard measurements, though they certainly vary. You'd have to do a bit of research and compare IPA with methylated spirits to see what the differences are. Sorry I couldn't come up with a better reply. Keep after the solution, because it's a real money saver over the store bought brands. 🍁☕👊

      Hi Mike. I'm not really an airbrush specialist. I started out with a pretty average priced Timbertech brand set (compressor, airbrush, hoses, connectors, etc.) and have had very good luck with it, so I haven't felt the need to upgrad yet. I did buy a trigger style airbrush recently, just to see if I like it. Head over to Diecast Graveyard to get lots of information on brands and recommendations from Paul. He's my 'go to' guy on this topic. 🍁☕️

    Many say can use just bottled water for it is not tap water if have tap water in a city I use bottled water 💦 now heard ammonia dose not really hurt the airbrush many saying this. Thank you for tutorial 🎉😂😊 Now as for acrylic paints can I use like the apple brand or any brand? Also can I use ink too in airbrush? If so do I need to add anything into the liquid inks?

    • @MapleLeafCustoms

      The cleaner and thinner will work perfectly well on all brands of acrylic paints. Not sure about the ink question though, as I've never tried that. I imagine I'd want to dilute it first. Also wash out the airbrush immediately afterwards. I have a couple of cheap airbrushes that I use to experiment with on these types of things. 🍁

      Vallejo only goes gummy when you use pure isopropyl once you dilute it it's fine, btw Vallejo thinner and cleaner is made using Butyl glycol so if you swap out the isopropyl for the butyl you'll have basically the same thing as Vallejo charge a fortune for.

      Hi Svein! You can definitely use both of these DIY recipes for acrylic (Vallejo) paint jobs. That's what they're made for. The ingredients are basically the same as the store brand products, but can be mixed for a fraction of the price. That's the advantage. You don't have to use both together. You can use a DIY thinner and a store bought cleaner, or vice versa. Let me know if you try this and how it works out, OK? Thanks for watching and commenting, and I appreciate your question. • @gpapaikoful
    @gpapaikoful Před 2 lety

    HI,
    This is good but have noticed that your calculations is slightly out for a 3:1 ratio for 250ml.
    They should be Water: 187ml, ISO Prop: 63ml.
    Calculation:
    water: (250/(3+1)) * 3 = 187ml
    ISO Prop: (250/(3+1)) * 1 = 63ml.
    and then the 10 15 drops of glycerin.
    I use a similar formula but with a 2:1 ration of water : ISO Prop, and the same number of drops of glycerin.
    I think your formula might a little better of one of the brand (Vallejo), I noticed that recently they may have changed their acrylic paint formula to an acrylic/urethane based base, because when I thinned it formed a "rubber type" of a skin on the mixing rod, which never happened with the older stock that I have, hence looking at other options to test.
    I will be testing the following rations to see which one works best.
    5:2 ; 3:1 and 4:1

      @MapleLeafCustoms  Před 2 lety

      You've done some careful math here, George. More than I did. I just created a composite recipe from the many that I'd seen here on CZcams. It's working OK for me. I haven't got any of the newer Vallejo paints though. Thanks for taking the time to help me learn. 🍁👊☕️

      @@MapleLeafCustoms No prob my please, we are all learning something new all the time.
      As to the Vallejo paints, I had experiment last night two small batch one with a thinner of water:ISOPro (Call this B1) and one with water:acetone (Call this B2) same ratios 2:1 for both B1 and B2, bith B1 and B2 had a couple of drops of Glycerin added.
      When mixing Vallejo paint in two small tubs 5 drops in each:
      1/ B1 - batch started to form a visible "skin" while
      2/ B2 - thinned nicely.
      So a next step a more thorough test I will be making two 60ml bottles of the following thinner formula and buying two new Vallejo paints of the same color.
      As I already have a 15 lt container of ISO PRO 99.9% - Bought this a couple of years ago cheap.
      B1: Water (2) -40ml:ISO PRO 99.9%(1)-20ml and 4 drops of Glycerin
      B2: Water (2) - 40ml:Acetone (1) - 20ml and 4 drops of Glycerin
      Then make two 10ml jars of thinned Vallejo paint and see what happens and test as to how each sprays.
      I know how B1 will turn as as I have been using this formula for a build I am already doing on just a couple of parts, so the test will be mainly on B2 formula and will let you know of the results.
