Bonus tip: If you're using any Pon-like substrate, make sure you RINSE it really, really well!
Im so glad i came across your videos.Hoyas are my new love and im trying to decide what will work best for me. 😊
Thank you for sharing your experience, I learned a lot from it.
I found that pon or pon-like substrates have a steep learning curve. I tried for months to figure out what I was doing wrong and why my Hoyas roots kept dying off. I got fed up with it and I am now in the process of moving all of my Hoya into coco chips/ perlite in self watering. In my experience it’s much simpler. I really really wanted pon to work for me but after almost a year of stress I tried coco chips and never looked back. Your Hoyas look so good!
I'm glad you found something that works for you!
This was incredibly helpful
Great explanations. I’m using some of these methods and products. I learned something new.
As you know self watering pots can be expensive, even though they are very effective I would like to find cheaper. Do you have suggestions ? Diy etc ?
I haven't found a perfect method for making DIY ones yet, but the concept is pretty simple. You just need some cotton wicking cord and 2 pots that leave a gap between them when stacked. You could probably reuse plastic drink cups, that kind of thing.
Personally I find the self-watering pots in the video pretty reasonable. They come to like $3 a pot and it's hard to find cache pots for that price 😅
Thank you Genna❣️ sooo helpful 💚🪴
I'm glad you found it helpful!
I would strongly suggest repotting plants before the roots get that long. I have had to rip the roots off of self-watering pots and hurts me to do it.
Excellent video. I've found my thinner leafed Hoya are more prone to stem rot and I use Great White in water as it's water soluble.
I will have to check that out!
Yes, I came here to vouch for great white. Even in my soil plants, they love it.
Thanks for the recommendation!
Hi, great video and tips!
I was wondering if you tried SWP with an avoid mix? I only have my hoya bella in a SW pot with a hoya mix (she's thriving but it's a thirsty one so it's hard to try it with other hoyas)
I have but not with hoyas, only with plants like calatheas. The wetness really accelerates how quickly an organic mix breaks down and I just find it safer to use an inorganic one. Doesn't mean it can't be done but I think you'd have to replace the substrate eventually
What's your feeding routine like for plants in self-watering? Do you ph adjust? Nice tips btw 😊
I use Root Farm all purpose hydroponic fertilizer every time I water and yes I adjust the pH to about 6.5 🙂
Any idea if Anthuriums work with self watering pots? I killed my Philodendron El Choco Red with a self-watering pot! My Philodendron crawlers LOVE the pots... other than that, I'm apprehensive to try the other plants in my collection with the pots. .
I'm slowly switching over all my anthuriums to self-watering, they seem to do really well!
