What's really funny is that Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern movie was supposed to be the start of the DC Cinematic Universe, but because the movie didn't do well in the box office and got mixed reviews, DC and WB had to go right back to the drawing board lol

    • @lordmontymord8701

And then they decided to go in the complete opposite direction with Man of Steel when it comes to tone. WB-logic at it's finest.
That being said i think the Dark Universe was even funnier. First Universal wanted to start it with Dracula Untold, but that one failed, so it was The Mummy ... and then that movie bombed too, so the project was scrapped.

      How is that illogical?
      >We made a movie campy like this and it flopped
      >The most recent Batman movies at the time were dark and successful
      >Superman is in the same universe as Batman, not the campy Marvel one
      >Campy tone didn't work, so let's try the opposite and use a dark tone
      Totally sound logic.

    • @lordmontymord8701
      @lordmontymord8701 Před 3 měsíci +1

@@Richard_NickersonI don't think the tone was the biggest or even a big problem of that movie. There's the writing in general, the villains, the characterization of Hal Jordan (he's an unlikable idiot in many adaptations, but that doesn't make this one better) and so on.
Simply reducing it to "it's campy and therefore it flopped" is exactly the mistake many movie execs make when they analize why a movie didn't make the money they expected: Breaking it down to one - and only one - problem (that might not even exist). And then go in the completely opposite direction.
Man of Steel and BvS didn't really flop, but they didn't perform as expected (which was at least Avengers-level box office).
So what's the problem this time? Also clearly the tone, so we bring in the guy behind Avengers - perfect plan. Of course completely ignoring what you rightfully pointed out: The Dark Knight-trilogy was dark, more realistic and made money. So was it really the tone? Or were there maybe other elements like the quality?

Snapping Zod's neck was not only the only way to end that specific situation, but killing Zod was the only way to stop him. They'd have no way to contain him, even if he had given himself up.
Also, snapping the neck has got to be the least gruesome way to kill someone. It was quick and free of gore.
Also also, you can tell how much it hurts Superman to do this. He really didn't want to kill Zod, but Zod forced his hand.
Edit: Snyder-verse Batman is a killer too, so I really don't get Superman being the focus of such ire.

@@joshuastoughton1693Your points really don't make sense. You're saying they are garbage super hero movies by disrespecting the lore but......Superman and Batman have killed in the comics before (and not just in the early comics either) and in movies before. Superman killed Zod back in Superman II!
You also say Snyder lacks imagination because he made the decision to kill Zod yet you A) fail to provide any actual alternative reason to stop him, therefore making your argument pointless, B) forget that he killed Zod in Superman II in an even less imaginative and thought provoking manner and C) say this line like it's some actual fact despite the fact that you're just some random person on the Internet who's opinion doesn't hold much water anyway.
I think Snyder gets way too much hate from low IQ movie watchers who have no idea what they are talking about and because Snyder didn't make the film THEY wanted, that makes him a bad filmmaker. It's kind of similar to what George Lucas experienced.

      @crater044 Před 3 měsíci +4

@@user-xx6vy9ri8pYou just answered your own question though......he IS inexperienced. Your complaint doesn't hold water because you are wanting Superman in Snyder'a film to act like the Superman you grew up with but that's not who he is at this stage.
This is literally his first fight lol. It's 4 God like beings doing battle and destroying the city in the process with Zod and his cronies doing a lion's share of the destruction.......people are going to die and Superman is going to make mistakes. That's why in BVS, he learns from this. That's called character development.
Also even in the fucking cartoons, he was punching people through skyscrapers so I don't know why this is a criticism of Man of Steel.
The "flaws" and "criticisms" of Snyder's DC movies are about as surface level and full of shit as most of the "flaws" and "criticisms" of the Star Wars Prequels.

The fact we never got a solo Batfleck movie with Snyder at the helm is downright criminal. His directorial style would have been perfect for depicting Gotham. Hell, he probably would have had Nolan's help writing it.

Nolan was done with Batman, so i doubt that. He wasn't exactly crazy about doing a third Batman-movie on his own.
And Snyder ... one thing i will never forget is him saying that in his movie Batman could even get raped in prison. Why? Because it's edgy, that's why. Of course the Batman from BvS was not the worst thing ever created, but that has in my opinion more to do with Affleck than Snyder.
His great idea was to center this around Batmans conflict with Superman, taking inspiration from The Dark Knight Returns, especially with the fight, as he said himself. Not realizing that Batman just wanted to humiliate Superman in that story, not kill him. While Batfleck definitly wants to kill this really dangerous being, but creates a pretty idiotic plan (that made sense in the graphic novel). So aside from the visuals i don't think he could have done a good Batman-movie ...

While I personally don’t like Synder’s films, it is still pretty upsetting that his story for this universe will never get the proper conclusion it was supposed to be building towards. And to some extent, I also understand that frustration coming from Synder fans. I know what it’s like to have a series that you liked never get any satisfying closure, believe me, it sucks.
But the problem with the DCEU is that everything from the world building, to the characters, and even the movies themselves are so fundamentally flawed and inconsistent, that it’s BEYOND repair. It’s one of those things that would be better off getting a hard reboot, because continuing the story while also trying to constantly course correct will make the universe feel even more of a mess than it needed to be.
Even if this universe did get a proper conclusion that tied all these movies together in the same way that Infinity War and Endgame did with the MCU, sure, that’s great and all… But, now if you want to see how it all comes together, you’d have to sit through so much crap just to get to the good stuff. It wouldn’t be worth it anyway, especially if the hypothetical finale isn’t even good. I’m sorry, Snyder fans, but it’s true.
If anything, DC should’ve rebooted this cinematic universe ever since 2017’s Justice League, since that movie massacred Synder’s ongoing storyline and DC gambled away more than 400 million dollars on that movie, only to get astronomically low returns. It’s not like most of the movies that came after it got better anyway.
Hopefully, now that the DCU is finally getting the reboot is so desperately needed, James Gunn will do this series justice.
So yeah, that’s my long rant.

As someone who was not a Superman fan at the time, I absolutely hated Man of Steel, and it motivated me to read the comics to see Superman as he should be out of spite. I don't have anything against Zack Snyder as a person, but he was the wrong person to have for a Superman movie, let alone the sequel involving Batman. He has said that he did not like the superhero genre until he looked at comics like Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns. That's a bad sign because before that, the only comics Zach liked was Heavy Metal magazine, which is a completely different flavor from mainstream comics. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but from what I understand, he buys into that objectivist nonsense where they believe altruism is bad. That outlook is not exactly the right fit for a Superman director. People can reason what they will about Supes killing Zod because there was no alternative, but that's only because the writers made it so there was no alternative other than killing Zod. Just screamed of a lack of imagination and making things dark just for the sake of it. But I can respect that you have a different opinion.

Regarding Superman "not saving Metropolis", the World Engine had 2 parts, 1 on each side of the planet, Superman flew to the one on the opposite side of the globe from Metropolis ; the amount of time he spent flying across the globe coulda been spent dealing with one in Metropolis. Also, regarding Batman, he DID kill in comics. His very 1st comic saw him punch a guy into a vat and then saying "A fitting end to his kind.". He even used guns. Batman wasn't a superhero, he was a Pulp Action Hero. The "No guns, no killing" code was simply forced onto the character to satisfy the Comics Code Authority, which is now obsolete since nobody listens to it anymore. I always had hoped the DCEU woulda been revealed in JL as a somewhat time-travel mess where the heroes we grew up idolizing were preventing Darksied from conquering Earth, until he captured Flash, learned how to Time-Travel via Speed Force and went back to mess with their origins so that when he first arrives they can't beat him because they would be a flawed broken version of their former selves. Example: Steve Trevor was meant to live a full life but he sacrifice in WW was the result of manipulation by Darksied, Batman is darker because Darksied told Joker to kill Grayson's Robin before Jason Todd was found and Superman would be taught to isolate himself bcuz Darksied intimidated Pa Kent via the ship. That's how I woulda handled the DCEU, reveal it to be a broken but not completely hopeless retelling.

Not because it's not a good "Superman movie" like most people say, but because it's a poorly written, poorly paced, poorly shot, mess of a film that lacks any real identity related to Superman. It features a person with the name "Superman," and a person named "Clark Kent," but that's as far as it ever goes. If you or other people like it, cool. I like Morbius. I'm hardly one to judge.

BVS should have always been the Age of Ultron movie. More accurately, Civil War as AoU didn't do its job very well
I'm talking specifically about narrative placement, not the narrative itself or the performance.
The team-up movies are your traditional trilogy, Avengers Assemble is A New Hope, AoU/CW is Empire Strikes Back, and Endgame and Infinity War were Return of the Jedi.
You have your characters succeed in the first, fail in the second, and succeed once and for all in the third. If you're going past that, you want a major paradigm shift.
Justice League puts the crew together and the solo movies fill in the gaps before the team collapses in BVS
