Dick Cavett has been nominated for eleven Emmy awards (the most recent in 2012 for the HBO special, Mel Brooks and Dick Cavett Together Again), and won three. Spanning five decades, Dick Cavett’s television career has defined excellence in the interview format. He started at ABC in 1968, and also enjoyed success on PBS, USA, and CNBC.
His most recent television successes were the September 2014 PBS special, Dick Cavett’s Watergate, followed April 2015 by Dick Cavett’s Vietnam. He has appeared in movies, tv specials, tv commercials, and several Broadway plays. He starred in an off-Broadway production ofHellman v. McCarthy in 2014 and reprised the role at Theatre 40 in LA February 2015.
Cavett has published four books beginning with Cavett (1974) and Eye on Cavett (1983), co-authored with Christopher Porterfield. His two recent books -- Talk Show: Confrontations, Pointed Commentary, and Off-Screen Secrets (2010) and Brief Encounters: Conversations, Magic moments, and Assorted Hijinks(October 2014) are both collections of his online opinion column, written for The New York Times since 2007. Additionally, he has written for The New Yorker, TV Guide, Vanity Fair, and elsewhere.

Lauren and her voice and attitude and beauty is just something special in Americana culture.
He was so quietly disarming and witty. I loved him. He was wonderful. They obviously liked each other. Great interview and she's terrific.

46 is middle age and certainly not old. She lived another 43 years, another lifetime, after this video.
It’s crazy how different 46 looked back then versus today. There are women in their 60s and 70s today who look like she does here.
I’m 46 and if I were a working actor and someone referenced movies I made 25 years before, those movies would be “old.”

Talk shows started to take a dive when audiences were encouraged to participate ..you know, applaud every thing instead of listening ..
She was always a beautiful woman. In retrospect it’s interesting to see how people aged back then, seemed like a little quicker than today.

Oh man, Cavett in his prime was the king of great interviews ... even when he goofed up. And Bacall is the definition of class and elegance.
I love the line in that movie, "To Have Or Have Not," but why can't she simply say that "it was provocative for the times?"

I don't know whether or not Ms. Bacall saw Coco but I did and found it to be the worst musical I have ever seen. Aside from Hepburn's voice there wasn't even one song that was memorable. Bacall may not have been a vocalist but she could sing rings around the great Kate. The score for Applause was hardly a landmark as well--I never saw it--and I think it has never been revived as far as I know. The reason to see it was of course Bacall.
Sing rings around Kate? Bacall couldn't sing, at least according to David Niven in one of his books, The Moon's a Balloon or Bring on the Empty Horses

She looks incredible. She also lived another 43 years after this, so she was only halfway through her life. It’s doubtful any of us will be so lucky to reach an old age, seeing as the life expectancy is dropping now.

i have nothing against the other celebs that were on this show but is this channel ever going to show the Dick Cavett shows where he interviews Jackie Gleason or Art Carney? How about any Honeymooners actors that were a part of the main cast?
A lot of those Cavett shows are not available, unfortunately.

@@Gannooch I remember Cavett saying that a number of his early shows (on ABC Television, I believe it was) are not available because the tape was re-sused and his shows were taped over. Carson said the same thing about some of his early Tonight shows. Unfortunate.

@@VideoAmericanStyle I'd say it certainly was the smoking and drinking. My mother was her generation and had a bit of that mid-Atlantic speech training as well - reminds me of a whole generation. Also madame Bacall - Betty Jean iirc - was from my hometown to boot. You can hear the native New York underneath the training.
She was 19 in her first movie and could have passed for 30. She has always looked older and quite quickly became difficult to cast.

btw.....she's 46 here. She certainly doesn't look 46....or sound it. And that hairstyle! Well....it was the early 1970s, I know. At that particular point in time, many middle age women had, what would now be considered as being, God-awful hairstyles.
It's pretty amazing that she lived to 89. I mean, I'm pretty sure, back then, she coulda given someone like Sammy Davis Jr. a serious run for his money in the chain-smoking department.
