I was an 11 bravo at Aco 2-14 inf at ft drum and got there in feb ‘94 right after my fellow soldiers that pulled the rangers out of Somalia and got back from leave. There was only about 6 or seven of us that got orders for Drum, only 2 of us got to alpha co and we we hated every day. These guys were a cohort company and had been together for 4 years and hated us cherries bad. We got smoked every single day from team leader all the way up to plt sgt . I hated life until they ets’d about 6-8 months later. But by the time I left drum I was in the best shape of my life. I got my EIB in the spring of ‘96 but ets’d in October that same year so I couldn’t wear it much. I finally hooked up with a buddy of mine that I went to benning with and we ended up being roommates at drum. Boy it was nice talking to him. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life but I wouldn’t take it back for the world. Fast forward 30 years and now my body is full of arthritis, had one hip replacement (due to incident at work) 10 years ago and need another one now. Being a grunt ruined my body but I guess that comes with the territory. Oh well thanks for listening to part of my story

I dont know much about this war but, im beginning to research after Omars comments... The main question i have is... Why were we there? Wasnt it a somalian civil war? I remember when we went to war over there but i never understood why we even went.
The way i understand it UN ordered humanitarian aid which the warlords kept raiding. International forces went in to secure the transport of food. This advanced to arresting the warlords which culminated in this incident.

This should have been a far more covert operation, the problem with large military operations is that 'they know you're coming'.
It wasn't a combat operation, they went basically as admiral Howes big stick to shake and threaten with to protect humanitarian relief. But those politicians never miss a chance to look macho. I live in u s a now but' the day the soldier's were getting killed I was in a Refugee camp in Kenya. According to my opinion Americans were trying to Help the hungry somalis. Their were more than 100.000 somalis that were facing famine in Baidoa and more 1000 including children were died. President Bush made the right decision to send troops to Somalia But Aidid and his Militia did not understand the solution!!!
