    I built a guitar using very similar methods, a few years ago. I'm ready to try again using the knowledge (i.e. mistakes) that I made last time to help make this new one better. It is a great hobby for those who appreciate the meditation of patience and attention to detail.

    He said, "This is just a hobby, I do it for fun" ... All you haters quit nitpicking the build & stop telling him what he needs.
    If he built it & enjoys playing what he built with what he had, that's good enough for him...he didn't make it for you.
    Awesome work Life L1ke, keep it up & use whatever tools you have.

    Please buy a good router and good set of router bits. hogging out the majority of the wood with a forsner bit was a great idea but in future projects, leave it a little short of finish depth and use the router. The bottoms will be much flatter and make better contact with the neck for better transfer of string vibration. The body looks AMAZING! Keep building!

    • @tonyduncan9852
      @tonyduncan9852 Před 5 lety +3

      Those were my thoughts too. Any non-flatness causes 'springiness' and surface friction, which would transform vibrational energy into heat wherever it occurred. A guitar build must always use stiff hard mechanical junction points to optimise the retention of mechanical vibration energy, and this means close tolerances of flatness and squareness. Also, internal cavities need an electrically-conductive lining to prevent the pickup wiring picking up external EM fields from nearby electrical equipment like amplifiers and fluorescent lighting, and if you're using adhesive metal foil it's a lot easier to lay down on a smooth surface. There are electrically-conductive paints which work too, but you then have to bond either to the rest of the earthing circuit. . .

Thanks for puttin' this up! ️🎸️🎼👍👏

    The bookmatching job on this is amazing. EXCELLENT craftsmanship. ABSOLUTELY STUNNING.

    • @williamtighe989
      @williamtighe989 Před 4 lety

      Actually it is not book matched. Book matches is a mirror image. But the grain matching is as good as can be done. If he wanted to book match he would have had to resaw both pieces and then glue them back together for thickness after book matching the side that would be seen. That is a lot of work and if you don't have a really good band saw, it is impossible.

    Envy and jealousy is a killer! Great luthier skills for being self-taught, and all done in a garage without a full on professional set up/operation atmosphere like you would see in a luthier shop. Also flaws are what we learn from to better hone one's skill. Keep it up, you are on the right track. The more you build, the better you become, and greater the skill unfolds. I myself always wanted to be a luthier but never got any further than the thought. I admire the craftsmanship of constructing an instrument from scratch, and then being able to then play your own art afterwards.
    At the time of seeing this video I seen 311 people who were jealous of your accomplishments, let that empower you to say I must be doing something right!

  • @OrbitalGuitars
    @OrbitalGuitars  Před 6 lety +165

    Seeing as how this video is over a year old at this point, there are a few things I should point out about it.
    The first is that I am 100% self-taught in doing this, and have never taken any classes in guitar making, just applying my general woodworking knowledge. That being said, over the past year I have spent a lot of time learning about better ways to make guitars - so if you're here to complain about how I did something in this video, odds are that I have already stopped doing it that way.
    The second is about the audio quality at the end, at the time this was recorded, my direct audio recording setup for the guitar was not good at all. The guitar playing in this video was recorded through a USB cable for the game "Rocksmith" which is not designed or intended for audio recording. Since this video was uploaded, I have upgraded my entire recording setup. There is a link in the description to a more recent video where the improvements are plain to see.
    Finally, if you're going to complain in the comments anyway, the least you can do is offer suggestions on how to improve. If all you're going to say is "sounds like shit" or "you're an idiot for doing ___", then your comment is useless and not worth reading.
    Edit: Yes I am aware that this video in its entirety has been re-uploaded on another channel that Google translate tells me is Indonesian, I haven't decided whether or not to do anything about it yet.
    Thanks for watching!

    Just started watching it, that was cool having to shave down the two flat sides because it really expanded the color from the central stripe. Man that was some good fortune with the find on that wood. I think the knot was a good sign... it shows that the wood is "ripe" with distinction and maturely developed flavor and texture, density and connection. But that's all out of me arse. But seriously, I'm enjoying this video, watching the book matching unfold as it gets flatter. That wood grain is awesome to watch fill out.

    One of the best looking guitar bodies I have seen in a while. To many people are hung up on the "Classic" guitar look - this is a nice throwback to the 80's with your own uniqueness. With some fine tuning, fret leveling and a thorough setup this guitar could be very playable. Killer looks though - mad props to you on this.

    Boys love your work and imagination, guitar turned out beautiful .I see you have the same problem with your drill press and hand drill as I use to. To fix the problem I listened to a learned elderly gent a long time ago, now I am that learned elderly gent. He told me to put the drill bit as far into the chuck as the drilling flutes and always tighten the chuck with all of the key holes usually three of them, but now a-days I have seen from 5 to none . just a thought to try to help with the accuracy stay busy Tim and THANKS

    Wow. What a beautiful hand carved body on that guitar! That is some impeccable work right there my friend! I wish i knew how to build things. Unfortunately, i don't have any tools, was raised by my mother and sister (aka- never had a father figure around when growing up) who knew nothing about tools, so in turn i know nothing about tools or building things. I would def like to learn one day though. It must feel great, to have and play a guitar that you built yourself. All the blood, sweat, and tears of your work pay off in the end when you are able to play a beautiful guitar that is all you..

He has a factory in Indonesia that makes mass production and he gets to fly out on occasion to play them, set them up and do a quality control inspection. Don’t give this up, that is if it’s what you love to do. You just need more exposure and the right kind of network!
