W210 Exhaust: Gutted AMG Muffler In Depth Look And Review

- A closer look and review of the exhaust on my 2002 E430. This sound would only apply to w210's with an m113. I have the stock headers and primary cats with the secondary cat and resonator removed, an x pipe installed, and a gutted AMG muffler. What a gutted muffler is in my case is that the stock AMG muffler which is a straight through design with resonated piped is packed with sound deadening material. The gutting is the muffler being cut open and removing the sound deadening material then welding the muffler back together. You can also modify the pipes inside but I did not do that. This is a great balance of sound. It is not too loud to the point where you will attract unwanted attention, but is still loud enough to be enjoyable and without any drone at highway speed. This setup is much louder than a stock muffler would be and even louder than some "high end" aftermarket mufflers.

OK- I did it. Gutted muffler (which lightened it by at least 25 pounds!), removed resonator (which weighed 20+ pounds!), added an "X" pipe, but I left my rear cats (I recently had them replaced and don't want any CA Smog Test issues- won't replace them in the future when they go bad again). Sound is sweet, especially when getting on it- NOT as loud as your mod- but sounds great! There is definitely a BIG unexpected increase in HP and acceleration/responsiveness! Really makes driving it more fun now for sure! FYI- my shop charged $300 but I have a long relation there so plan on $350+. Thanks Jeffrey!

I think I’ll do the same to my E55. I have Kleemann headers with no cats and a magna flow but it’s so damn loud. I’ll be adding cats to my car as the smell is bad too.
Unrelated question, do you know if the fan shroud and air baffle are interchangeable between the 430 and the 55? I have a 55 that needs these parts and it's been pretty hard finding parts, any recommendations?

The fan shroud is specific. I don’t know what you mean by air baffle?

Hey since I just had my 2 rear cats replaced on my 2002 E55, how do you think it would sound if I left them and the resonator in place and just modified my muffler like you discussed? The next question is- can the resonator be modified for less back pressure and better sound without having to remove it as you did it? If not and I remove it, does there need to be an "X" pipe installed to replace it? Thx
Check out my first videos. They are with just the muffler removed. It did drone a bit with the muffler delete. I don’t think gutting the resonator would do a whole lot. X pipe is optional.
@@SoCal210 OK, I did watch them a while back and will revisit them. What is the purpose of the X pipe? If I left the rear cats and removed the resonator, installed an X pipe, and gutted the muffler, how do you think it would sound? Definitely don't want that annoying drone effect!!! I'm worried about removing the cats for our Cal smogs. THX
With the muffler gutted or not it won’t drone unless you replace the pipes inside with solid ones. If your car is 99 or older it will fail the ca smog
I really want to do this on my 210 E55... Am i right in thinking there are 4 O2 sensors in the primary cats? Pre and post cat? Assume this mod leaves all 4 O2 sensors in place? Love your videos, you pretty much convinced me to buy an E55 and daily it (i use it for the morning school run mwuh ha ha haaaa) and i find all your instructive videos incredibly useful so thank you so much for making them!
Thanks! Removing the secondary cats does not affect the O2 sensors. They are for the primaries.

That’s for the electric smog pump. Has nothing to do with exhaust. In CA a 99 and older will fail as well with secondary cats removed.
@@SoCal210 interesting, been trying to figure out how to pass. Just picked up a W210 E55 from out of state completely stock (I’m in LA), and doesn’t want to pass. You have any tips n tricks?
Hard to diagnose a car over the internet. But i would recommend keeping it stock and scanning it and seeing what codes it has if that’s the reason it doesn’t pass. Replace parts with factory or OEM.
