You are out here saving lives and saving money ❤❤❤
Oh wow friend! I’m happy to pass along what I’m learning and what is working for me. It’s been a game changer in my life and once you realize that taking small steps really adds up, you can’t help but share! Happy gardening!
@@BecomingaFarmGirl Thank you for sharing! It means so much to see someone who looks like me farming, preserving and cooking homegrown food! I am so inspired 🥰🙌🏾🩵 Blessings to you and your family 💕🙏🏽
My daughter's dog keeps eating all of her ripe cherry tomatoes right off the vine! :D
If you don't have the money for a freeze dryer the get a dehydrator. You can do almost the same thing. It's much cheaper & it's easy to do
Absolutely! Consider freeze drying an option among the many that are available. It’s a splurge that I’m happy to have, but it certainly hasn’t stopped or replaced my other preservation methods.☺️
@BecomingaFarmGirl Hidi from Rain country on yt shows how to dehydrate things like eggs milk cheese & meat. She did say, "Cook your meat 1st, then freeze it, then thaw, then dehydrate. This way, it tastes more like freezing dried
Thank for all you do
I've watched your videos periodically and I want to shout out how much I appreciate your audio. You refrain from reusing words, such as "I'm going to..." or "add just". I listen to you while at work (yes, I'm also working. You're like background music) and you don't know how tiresome some videos are with repetitive, useless words. A+. Thank you for being an inspiration to us.
Your garden looks great. My oldest son and wife just bought a condo, and he mentioned he wishes he could grow peppers. I told him about Greenstalks. I told him they were made right in Knoxville, which is where he lives.
I have 2 Greenstalks. The one, a bird, made a nest in my lettuce and has 4 eggs. Must be my year for birds and their nest. I had another make a nest in my blackberry bush.
Girl! I need you to start printing a magazine 😁
Ooh, a video from Cassandra! Christmas came early!!
Yep, see video, click video!
🎉 aww, thanks so much friend!
So much great information available from you. I learn something new with each of your video's.
This is my first year using greenstalks, I bought an original and a leaf and let me tell you I am sorry to say my veggies did not look like yours. I lost all of my kale, which was what I wanted the most of all to grow, to little devil worms. But I will not give up, I will persevere! ❤
Wow, that tomatoes preservation in a jar was a game changer. I always end up throwing mine away because they go bad before I can eat them. One question, do you deal with mice or rats?? I live in a major city, that's major fear and keeps me from growing my own food on my back porch or yard.
Sadly, it's a thing. UGH!! Thanks!!
You had me at Cayenne pepper Pasta sauce!! I love spicy as much as the next girl, and Cayenne's are one of my favorites. but is it not heavily spicy as a sauce? If it is not going to burn my face off, I am trying that tomorrow!
That soups looks and sounds amazing!
You really do get a decent harvest from those Green Stalk planters.
Hi friend! You truly do and I think I go against the grain and plant more seeds in the pocket than what I see many others doing because they can handle it! I’d never be able to grow this much if I wasn’t a vertical planter!
You go girl! Informative, high energy, fun video.
Thank you so much!!
Cassandra. This is the second time that I have watched this video. Your tips have made an impact on methods I now use for gardening and preserving and freeze drying food. Last summer I gave hydroponic gardening a try also I fell in love with another method of growing food. Thanks for all that you do and share.
Have you tried freeze drying tomato skins? I have heard the powder has a lot of tomato flavor.
That’s next on my list friend!! I’ve heard the same thing!
I love watching your videos. I learn so much. I have a question regarding broth. I made turkey bone broth for the 1st this past January. I have seen mostly light broths. However, my broth was more golden brown. Is it okay to have a darker broth? It taste okay, and no one has gotten sick.
Heck yeah. Did you roast your turkey first? That would add color. Mine often looks like beef broth.
@@margaretburrows1974 Yes, it was the bones from my Thanksgiving turkey and veggie scraps. I think I said Christmas.
Fyi for people who don't eat fish, miso paste gives a similar effect also nutritional yeast is a great addition to a wet sauce to save simmer time, and its high protein to boot!
Girl, I have lemon balm growing..it started in a whiskey barrel and I think the seeds have spread all over the garden. It smells wonderful though. I love growing herbs. I wish I had a freeze dryer, but until then, I dehydrate as many herbs as I can.
That anchovie paste hack is one I am definitely going to try very soon! That is amazing. i like to simmer my sauce for hours, but if i can achieve that same umami flavor without all the time, that would be fantastic.
As someone who does NOT like anchovies, I almost always have a jar in the fridge (we don’t tend to have the tubes of paste here in AUS). It makes a world of difference to so many dishes.
I have tried to be extra creative with what’s left once I have cooked things. I have canned the pot liquor from cooking my collards. I haven’t used any of it to cook something else because I love to warm it up and drink it as is when I am not feeling well. ❤
Thank you for inspiring me to preserve amd eat fresh from our garden
im down the rabbit hole with farming, gardening, forging, permaculture, homesteading, farm animal raising, canning, dehydrating, freeze drying, curing, prepping and bulk videos i have NEVER heard of someone freeze drying MEAT. n at a point where i thought i have seen it all u surprised me. on top of ur soothing voice u got a new subscriber from me💯💪🏾💅🏾🤌🏾
Sure hope you are considering writing a book. You have so much information in one video. I would buy your book for sure.
Picked up some great tips . Thank you❤
Love this! ❤
More videos on greenstalkers please❤
As always I am walking away hungry with a ton of great ideas and recipes.
You and me both! 😃
Another great video! Your Garden stalks are doing fabulous!
Thanks so much!
Maybe you could share experiance, tips and tricks how to grow stevia soo luscious, leafy and green long term, propogating ? (unsuccessful on long time growing 2-3 years)
You have amazing ideas on what to do with food! Love your videos!!
Thanks so much! 😊
Another great vid ❤ And now I’m off to Google 45 day cabbages and see if available in AUS 🇦🇺- keen to make my own sauerkraut this year
I have a few questions.
1.) Do you wash/rinse your herbs off before drying them?
2.) Are you using the Stems aswell or just the leafs ?
3.) Idk Marrylands weather but what do you do in the winter are you still growing no not? And if you are you can share a video about it please?
BTW I love your content truly inspiring ❤ I love it here
Hi friend! Good questions! 1. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t and here’s why: some herbs have volatile oils and beneficial yeast that I want to keep and since my garden is off the ground, regularly watered and rinsed I feel ok not rinsing them and instead sifting out the clearly “bad” parts I wouldn’t want to preserve. 2. For tinctures i absolutely use the leaves and stems as the stems deliver nutrients to the plants. In most of my herb plants that don’t have a woody stem (like rosemary) yup-I blend the stems in too because they have the same flavor it’d be a shame to toss them out. My gardening season ends late fall after the frost hits. Once I have a greenhouse, I can absolutely grow year round in MD, but for now I actually enjoy the few months break. 😀
Great video
Thanks so much friend!
Could you share the specific variety of Cayenne pepper you are growing? Im also using a greenstalk and I am getting a dehydrator to make fertilizer so thank you for all of your tips, that's how i found you originally was for Greenstalk advice! Love your channel, thank you for putting so much work into it.
Hi Cassandra..I bought a green stalk with all the bells and whistles because my husband and I watched your show on the planting etc about a year or so ago ...well this spring (we really didnt have much of) I planted my garden ....I wrote you asking some advice and never heard back well some of the plants grew and some...(my squash and tomatoes) have occupied the deck floof and is spreading...I have a lot of squash blossoms no tomatoes....really very unsuccessful...When I wrote you it was for advice on what to plant for the first time..what tier to do it in etc Im hoping you will answer me when you have time as this year was basically in a sense a waste unless my squash actually produces from all those flowers...I have gotten so many ideas from you that I use(making ketchup, mayo and dressings) but I SO want to be able to have my greens etc produce so I can can preserve and eat...Please help ....thanks so much I am in Raleigh, NC have a large deck...and do have a bit of a yard but we do have deer, rabbits and other stuff roaming and my yard is not fenced in I dont know what I did wrong but hoping for some of your expertise ....Julianna NC
Okay corn stalk broth? Tell me more! We just harvested a ton of sweet corn with our amish neighbors..
What can I still plant? I just bought an empty lot to grow did this fall
Hi, Cassandra. What a blessing to see your garden doing so well.
Am going to try those tomatoes in a jar.
Love you beautiful basket. Yum Cassandra your crock pot cabbage looked so delicious. Well everything looked delicious. Garden is growing great. We have had no rain and high heat. Only thing left are tomatoes, bell pepper and okra. Added several gallon bags of tomatoes in the freezer today. Enjoyed the video. Thank you Cassandra. Have a wonderful week.
Love all of the veggies you produce from your patio
Thanks so much! With vertical gardening you can truly pack a punch in a small space!
Thank you Cassandra, you bring me joy.
Awww, friend I’m so happy to hear this! Hang in there!
I look so forward to your videos!!
Sandra honey, thank you! Great and wonderful ideas, i have my Amazon shopping cart ready to go with the weights, which I didnt know existed, and other supplies. Now I have new and better ways to have long lasting goodies... thank, thank you, thank you!
Such a beautiful garden & harvest!!!
Hey Cassandra! I'm vegetarian and was wondering if you've ever tried using miso paste instead of anchovy paste for the quick tomato sauce?
I love your videos! Could you please share the varieties of tomatoes, cabbage, etc. that you are using in your Greenstalk and your source for the seeds? I am a third grade teacher, and we will be going our school's first fall garden this year in our two Greenstalks. Thank you!!
I believe she has a video on the seeds that she buys if you search back. I'm sorry I don't remember off the top of my head.
Thanks, i have alot of herbs that i would like to freeze dry. Best to you
Best of luck!
Perfect timing, my husband’s cayennes are just starting to come in and I wasn’t sure what to do next, other than dry them for later! Your Greenstalks look beautiful. I may have to try the container varieties next year, my herbs have been doing ok in there but I still haven’t managed vegetables in mine yet.
Do you have any container gardening books you recommend?
Another great video, Cassandra! The cabbage and potato soup looks good. Fermenting to preserve tomatoes also was a good method to put up yummy cherry tomatoes. We call the green onions you freeze dried chives. I hope to harvest some chive seeds tomorrow. I have been drying greens on screens in the hot sun. Thank you!
That soup was so filling and yes, my favorite! I felt so proud of that little meal because I grew the greens and used homemade broth. I so appreciate your kind words! I’m glad to hear your preservation is going well too!
@@BecomingaFarmGirl Our family loves cabbage. Ham broth potatoes and cabbage are a perfect three way match. You grow a lot in your green stocks and they look beautiful. You are officially a Farm Girl. You are without a Farm but with a Farm Girls Heart, Mind and Fortitude. You can be proud of everything you do to run your household. Thank you Cassandra. You are still the best channel on CZcams.
what lids do you use for the brake pump method?
Love love love your videos
Aww, thank you sweet friend!
Hi, sorry, what was the name of the miniature Basil you grow?
Can you explain why you dehydrated your stevia over freeze drying it? I’m just curious if it’s better that way. I tend to do everything in my FD now that I have one.
Yay! Another video😊 Cassandra do you have amy problems with squirrels or birds in your greenstalks? Squirrels, chipmunks, birds are the reason I stopped gardening.😢
Great video, great ideas to save money and have delicious food! Do you have tips on successful stevia germination to harvest? I have had the hardest time with this plant. I have even purchased the live plant, and it didn't make it long. I know I can grow things. I have a yard of vegetable plants. However, stevia and most herbs elude me.
You are an amazing gardener and cook! Val C
You are flattering me, friend because I don’t feel that way at all and I’m certain vertical gardening makes me look like I’m “better” than I am. I have an in ground plot at a friend’s farm and it doesn’t look nearly as “kept”!
@@BecomingaFarmGirl Nope true indeed. You inspire me. ❤️🙏🏻
Amazed by how much you can grow on your desk. I’m in a condo with a small balcony and just received my first GS (thanks for the code). Eager to get started, but am afraid it’s too hot (SoCal zone 9a). Any suggestions? Thanks!
Hi 👋 there, hope all is well
present. 😊
Haha, love this!
How did you preserve those garlic cloves?
❤what filters are u using for your Berkey now? Love the video!!
Thanks friend! I’m still using the original filters because I had a few sets on hand.
Thank you for another informative video. Do u have a video that focuses solely on starting in the Greenstalk with the potting soil, seed starter, fertilizer, n anything else one would need to begin?
Hi friend! I sure do, if you go through my playlist you’ll see a video I posted about 2 months ago showing you how I set up for spring!
Awesome. This is so helpful because I’m just getting started with canning…haven’t done any just watching videos and reading. What variety of cherry tomatoes do you grown in your Greenstalks?
Hi friend! These were “sweet and neat” compact cherry tomatoes! I love them! They grow from late spring clear through the cooler temps of fall!
Thank you. 👍🏻
You're welcome!
As always, a great info packed, inspiring video. What variety of cabbage did you grow?
Aww, thanks so much! It’s called a 45 day cabbage!
Hello what variety of cherry tomatoes are shown in this video?
Your garden is beautiful! I tried two GreenStalks for the first time, but I have not had any fruit from my plants! They’ve grown, had flowered, but have not gone beyond that stage 😢
Oh friend, I’m sorry to hear this. What did you grow? And where, relative to the sun did you position them? Did you use potting mix or garden soil? Just curious because trouble shooting around that is usually a problem solver.
@@BecomingaFarmGirl I used the recommended soil mix from the company. I had planted tomotates, basil, peppers, kale, swiss chard, eggplant, cucumber, lemon balm, and parsley. I did get yield from the parsley and lemon balm, but nothing else. The only thing I can think of is because of the heat wave this may have damaged the plants.
The freeze dryer is a luxury item. The cost (thousands $) is definitely not for someone on a budget. I see so many CZcamsrs pushing this appliance. Do ur research before deciding to buy.
I was literally going to type this, so thanks for saving me from repetition. Not an option at all.
True...but the flavor is worth it, especially if you grow a large amount. I'm good with my amazon dehydrator for now🤣
❤
You need a slice of cornbread with your taters and greens….. yummy 😋
Where did you get the brake bleeder?
Any car parts store will carry brake bleeders. Or look in the automotive section of Walmart.
I hope this helps.
My local auto zone, but they have them on Amazon too!
How do you keep pests off your plants?
I didn't catch the name of the Basil you planted?
I think boxwood?
Boxwood Basil! I loooooooove it so much!
I tried so hard, but nothing survived. Waiting on next year
What growing zone are you in (just type your city into The Google)? There may still be time before the first frost for you try again this year? My garden patch for the past 20 odd years has been an apartment balcony with containers for veg and herbs. I had to go through some complete fails before I got here, and I still fail out, but it's fun. Besides, you already have the soil...
- Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi
Thank you for your words of encouragement. I’m in one of the hottest zones (desert in CA) you just gave me the encouragement to not quit but to truly learn my zone & be patient 💛
@@findingdori442yes! Learning your zone and trying different methods of growing is so very important! I'm 4 years in and still learning... My zucchini is not going great this year but my potatoes are... But I won't give up and neither should you! Especially with the way the world is now!! Start again now and then over the winter months plan for your spring, summer and fall garden.
@@juliabrown5948 Thank you so much for your reply & encouragement again 💛
I won’t give up 💪
Do you know the vertical containers that farm girl uses & where to get them?
I actually heard of people using laundry baskets purchased at dollar tree to grow in.
@@findingdori442 A game changer for me has been using Ollas ('pot' in Spanish) in my planters. Use a regular terracotta clay pot, sunk into the ground to the to just below the rim, with some compost blocking the drain hole. Keep them filled with water and the roots of the plants will grow around the pot as a water source.
It's how the Mayan's dealt with the heat and water evaporation. It's also how I deal with the plants being cooked in direct afternoon sun, reflecting on the white brick of the building. As long as the Ollas are filled, the plants aren't stressed.
I love your videos, but please.........Please wash that cast iron skillet with some soap lol
Soap is the enemy of a well seasoned cast iron pan.
Hi friend! Haha, I get it and I won’t shy away that my cast iron pans are workhorses. When I can, I will deliberately cook consecutive meals in the same pan in a single kitchen session. This is actually advised but it can give the impression that my pans aren’t clean. Trust me, they get a good soak with a Brillo pad at the end of the day. 😀
@@KitchenFairy61👍🏽and DEFINITELY Brillo! 😫
❤❤❤
It’s always good to “see” your face!!!
Personally, agree with slicing the sausage in half , white sliced bread is traditional, not too thick . I am a bit of a rebel & favour heinz ketchup, not brown sauce . No Brit would scoop any egg with fingers , that is what the crust of the bread is for . Cannot wait to see you guys reaction to our spotted d**k , Roly polly , etc , and no, you would never see me eating beans on toast . They are the devil's food . Must be the Welsh in me 😂😂😂😂.
wait wait, what's potlicker?
what are you storing the garlic in?
I mean, is it in oil or vinegar or just its own juices?
I keep my bulbs submerged in white vinegar until I’m ready to crush them and mix with olive oil for cooking. Aldi has a great price on peeled garlic so I buy those when I see the mm and preserve them for months just by pouring vinegar over top and keeping a jar of that in the fridge!
@@BecomingaFarmGirl thx!
Thank you! I loooooooove your channel btw
