  • In the early 1940s, American film actress Veronica Lake changed her trademark peekaboo hairstyle to encourage women working in war industry factories to adopt more practical, safer hairstyles. Veronica Lake was a popular American film actress who enjoyed both popular and critical acclaim, especially for her femme fatale roles in film noir with Alan Ladd during the 1940s. A stray lock of her shoulder-length blonde hair during a publicity photo shoot led to her iconic hairstyle which hid one eye, and was widely imitated

After Veronica Lake changed her hair, accidents in these plants fell by nearly 25%. Unfortunately, her career never recovered from that bit of public service.

Her pre-war look was what made her popular. Google "The Glass Key" and you'll see what iconic look I mean.

Although I agree with the bit about welfare check collectors, the workforce seen in this video was very different. The women in this video were required to work, to hold up the fort, if you will. While the men were away fighting in the war, some women were the ones building the weaponry and airplanes. As soon as the war was over, the working women went back to their homes and tended to their husbands and children, to what is now known as the 50s housewife.
