- Tuning the longwave band with my vintage Kenwood R-1000 general coverage receiver. These were made between 1979 and 1985 and make a great simple receiver. Antenna is a 4 turn loop, 7 feet in diameter. THis is the best I've heard France so far this season.
Thank you for posting, I bought a Kenwood R1000 and am going to pick him up tomorrow night, I like tuning in about fifty thousand times more than hanging in front of a monitor living in the two dimensional world of the PC, DX is vivid for ever, nothing better than listening to a Spanish primera división match through Radio Exterior de España with a cold beer on Saturday night : )
I just got an r1000 yesterday and on LW today I doubled my LW stations received.
It is an amazing receiver I have a random length wire go MW/LW and a 80 ft dipole (40ft on a side) fed into a 9:1 baling for SW
What a great radio. Far out performs my DX 394
Sounds like what I get on my YB-400 PE and DX-398 back when I used to live with my parents. I had outdoor longwire antennas to pick up that those familiar signals.
Usually with wires, LW requires very long antennas. The best one was a 500' wire antenna but loops do very well. I love the great Kenwood R models.. The 1000, the 2000 and the 5000. I bought all three on eBay.
Congratulations for to have received european long wave stations! It is first time I listen how them arrive in the USA. Here their signal are 60 dB over 9 during the evening and the night! 73 de Enrico, IW3FZQ
What you heard from France on 216 KHz is RMC (Radio Monte-Carlo). A very good DX !
I just googled it on the internet. I did mine a while back. All I remember was it involved snipping 2-3 resistors on the front end that made for a fixed attenuator. It really woke the thing up!! Much more sensitivity on AM as well!! Did not make much sense to me knowing that these receivers have a RF amplified front end.
a great machine of noise
Salt Lake City, Utah. I don't have a radio that gets LW at this point.
Great demo , thanks !
I never got the chance to really get into LW. Are there any decent stations on there any more?
I think that was EN 389 Kenosha you went past. That's the only longwave station in town here. I can get about 3 others with the cheap reciever I have.
@roon41 : Sez right on the video and in the description. Try adding inductance to your wire. LOTS of inductance, to bring it closer to resonance down on LW and I'm sure your rig will start picking up the beacons too. :^]
0:28 - its NDB of you close airport.
224 kHz "Warszawa"
@dann2ptf - Actually, I sold that radio (lucky guy). Wouldn't mind buying another though!
Thanks for the reply! I'll have to try that out and see if I can speed up the agc too..

I think it's easier to receive European LW stations if you are on the east coast than west. If you are in California it's more challenging.
bobskie321 Also Mongolian LW stations if you’re in China north coast.
They say R-1000 receives only from 200 khz-MW-SW. How does your receiver tune to 140/150 kHz?
Who says that? This is a stock radio.
Biffbradford It's good to see your reply. I have never had this receiver, but if you look for reviews, there everybody states that "The Kenwood R-1000 covers 200 kHz to 30 MHz" (www.universal-radio.com/catalog/commrxvr/r1000.html). Thank you!
Wat een ontvangst
Ik hoor bijna niets op de mw
Holy Cow! I have an R1000 and I can't receive anywhere near those kinds of LW stations with my longwire here in California...What Kind of antenna do you use for LW?

Did you do the MOD on the R1000 that increases sensitivity below 200KHZ?

*In america, I think LW is useless*
yes it is. I am in the EU and LW is boring.
We do have programs, but can get boring.
