HOW African footballers can make it in Europe

  • Johanna Omolo is one of over 2,000 Africans currently playing in European football. But for every one of these players that has made it, there are countless more who didn’t. We trace Omolo’s journey from Kenya to Cercle Brugge in the Belgian first division and his recent transfer to Erzurumspor in Turkey, as well as his efforts to develop the soccer infrastructure back home to help improve the chances for the next generation of footballers.
Thank you to Common Goal (www.common-goal.org) for collaborating on this project.

Being Kenyan and just seeing how Omollo articulates issues is amazing. As an amateur footballer, I can really relate to everything he's talking about football back home. I really appreciate the time and effort he's taken to make sure that the kids back home get an opportunity to develop their talent. As always, DW continues to create quality content while giving a voice to the voiceless. Thank you.

I couldn't imagine the pressure that being able to make your way in life, and to be able to positivly effect the lives of my family and community by doing the thing you love, would be an almost joyous burden.
I live where the chances of playing professionally are near as slim but the consequences of not doing so are not life altering.
I play for the fun of it and hope that my body will hold out long enough so that I can share the pitch with my boy.
That is a completely different animal and it is inspiring for me to see people that can make a huge difference in a shared passion, that for me doesn't bare the same consequences

A brilliant documentary... however, people, especially aspiring African players, should understand fully that there ARE children in Europe who go hungry, who have no shoes, he do not attend school. Those children have the same fire and desire to play football and they are already here. As great as Johanna is, he is till very naive to Europe and knows very little about the people of the many countries that make up Europe. You cannot say "Europe" because you know one to two countries, in the same way, you cant say Africa, because you know South Africa and Morocco. Good luck to his football school.

Johanna Omolo asked, "... why can't I have all this in Kenya, in Dandora?" You can have it Johanna. But Kenyans have to build a society like Belgium, Netherland, France, Germany, Italy, England, ... You have to build a republican government (based on the European Enlightenment) where the representatives are elected by the people. You have to build a free-market capitalistic trading system. You have to build a society where the rule of law is supreme. You have to build a society where its people can make a decent living and the property they create belongs to them and no one can take it away from them like they do in a kingdom, communist, or socialist system. It is not just football. You have to build a society with the right structure. Many people say to me, "We cannot do that. That is the culture of Western Europe." No it is not culture. It is logic and reason. If you want a good life then you have to solve real world problems with reason and logic. You cannot do it alone. Football cannot do it alone. The Kenyan people have to build that society together. All African people have to build that society that civilization together. What Western Europe has build, Kenya can build. But you have to change. It cannot go on as it is. That is what the Europeans did. They changed themselves. The French changed Europe. Thank you Johanna. We all have a long way to go.

Even as 12year old I already had no doubt Omollo was destined for the grand stage. He played for Club Baltimore as a kid, his group was a golden one and am hart that not all his teammates made it this big considering some were better than him(am sure he agrees with me) . In the same group there was this kid called Manyasi he was better than Antoine Griezman for French team. Then Christian Buamy could play like ball like Ronaldinho. When Club Baltimore played Dandora was in a standstill. I pray another group comes through the ranks cos all we have in Dandora is TALENT maybe more than any part of the world. Yes the dumpsite is there but was we have in abundance is talent!!!
