I would like to add that it is also helpful to remember what it is like for the native speaker that you are trying to talk to. When I have encountered someone that is new to speaking English and they make mistakes I never think they are stupid. I think they are trying to speak a new language and am impressed by what they DO know. I'm guessing it is the same for a native Spanish speaker.

I could cry … This will be long but…finding you feels like a breakthrough. In one of your conversations videos you asked why do you want to learn Spanish and it made me think…and one of the demo answers really resonated: mucho gusto cómo sueno…😅
Pero en serio, im an African American girl who grew up in a very culturally diverse part of Minneapolis. Fullll of hispanics and East Africans, and each being welcoming. Back when the streets felt safe, 8 year old me attended and walked the streets where the latino kids hung out and I attended a predominantly latino school. My teachers spoke Spanish and English the students spoke it and I always felt left out knowing only English but I remember I had a friend who nicknamed me “pequeñito” due to me being the shortest in class…it didn’t even feel offensive and she was the first to teach me Spanish words.
It always felt a part of me and I couldn’t get over the desire to learn more. I took honors Spanish in high school and to my disappointment..all my Spanish teachers were English natives 😅 while I appreciated the opportunity I know that it could never compare to being taught by a native speaking teacher and of course immersing myself ultimately. I’m grateful for you as I’ve recently decided to further my skills. I never really released them I talk to myself however 😅and my Dominican friend but the Spanish is not the same YOU are a blessing for your lessons thank you so much for all that your doing 🙏🏾 i am currently teaching my 2 year old son so that he may be bilingual…it’s messing with my English lately so I think it’s working 😁🤣

I want to say to fellow native English speakers that I have been able to speak French for around 40 years though having had a French girlfriend at the age of 16; My French was never and is certainly now not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but every time I've since been to their country (France), almost everyone I've come into contact with in the shops, etc, simply as a tourist has been patient and forgiving of my errors when communicating. ABSOLUTELY this is what I have found with the many native Spanish speakers I've found living here in the UK too. As of yet, I've still not managed to go to Spain since actually beginning to learn Spanish because of the Covid pandemic - but I cannot imagine that it will be any different there either
If I can give anyone else any advice it would be to learn how to say please and thank you. To find out the way to ask someone to slow down or say you've not understood what they've said and repeat perhaps in another way - and to remember to smile while doing so. 99%+ of the French and Spanish native speaking people I've come across when I (try to) use their languages have been so very helpful and they will help you too, I promise if you just do the magic little thing which is to TRY.
We are all human beings and (from what the experience of learning French as a kid had taught me) learning another language gives you a slightly different perspective on the world. A slightly different way of thinking - and the opportunity to enrich yourself. Do not be afraid of what you don't know or don't understand (right now). Give it a bash and have a laugh along the way. Just do a little every day in study / revision.

I am a retired professor from a highly ranked STEM university who has had thousands of students that were not native English speakers. I have traveled to many countries on six continents and interacted with thousands more. I have always been in awe of the English language skills that I have encountered among non-native speakers. Communication takes place. I have even found that when I only knew a few tourist phrases in a place where people did not speak English, it was possible to communicate. Essentially, no one is going to judge you, and even if they did, you might never see them again.

You said to let go of perfectionism-no one is expecting you to speak perfectly but my fear is, being Mexican myself, I AM expected to know Spanish and sound like a native. I have been looked down on all life by other Mexicans for not knowing Spanish and I am not fully accepted as a “real Mexican”. Do you have advice for me and other latinos in my situation?

si, i've been trying to learn español for a very long time, but i give up very easily. i've been made fun of all of my life for not knowing spanish and im ashamed for not trying harder. i am only 25 % mexican, my father speaks spanish but i never grew up around him.we also share the same last name which alot of people would point out when i was in elementary school when i said "i'm just white" because i honestly didn't know. my sister took all of my moms features, and i look just like my father. i've always been known as "the mexican" with non hispanics and "the white girl" with people who look like me. i've spent my entire life having no idea what i'm supposed to do about it. i don't know what to say when people ask about my ethnicity. if i say im white "no you're not" if i say im mexican the first question they ask is if i speak spanish, and when i say no it's "no you're not" , if i say im mixed it doesn't matter i get told that it's my responsibility to learn about my culture because if not i'm white washing myself, ii also get told to not even try because i AM white and id be posing as something that i'm not. i have no idea what to do and i feel lazy for not learning this sooner

I would first like to say that your English is very good. I understand every word that you say. You have a beautiful accent and a great sense of humor. I’ve been studying Spanish for about 14 months and it’s proved to be very challenging for me. I am blind therefore I don’t have the advantages of watching movies and or shows on Netflix and reading the subtitles to learn the language. I have to rely a lot more On just listening and repeating. Do you have any suggestions?
