"Farewell to all that lies behind me, and thank you. To the horizon before me, I will be there. I will be there as my feet permit me. As my soul chases the light few can see. I wonder and wander. I will be there."
Every once in a while comes a film that speaks directly to your soul. One that you feel was made for you, and you alone. While it might feel entirely personal, the experience of a deeply felt film can connect us all and reveal our most human qualities. Ad Astra means everything to me, and I hope you can take something away from this video regardless of what you thought of the movie.
"The near future, a time when both hope and hardships drive humanity to look to the stars and beyond. While a mysterious phenomenon menaces to destroy life on planet Earth, astronaut Roy McBride undertakes a mission across the immensity of space and its many perils to uncover the truth about a lost expedition that decades before boldly faced emptiness and silence in search of the unknown."

Just rewatched that movie, I just think that it s amazingly beautifull and sad at the same time. I think that some people like me can really find a connection with the main character. We constantly tell ourselves not to portray emotions, to the point where you don t even think about it. We then try to find very abstract, and complex goals in order to go forward (devoting our live to space exploration in the movie s case) and we end up buried in our work, when in the end, what matters is deep human connection, something a lot of people don't have.
    Amazing video.

The reason people hated this movie is because it deals with very mature subjects. The father son allegory, humanities eventual colonisation of space. These themes scare people off because they haven't grown up yet.

Ad astra was one of my favourite movies of last year because it used the space as a stage to tell the story of the human relationships, and not only between father and son, but between self vs expectations, subconscious vs conscious and humanity vs cosmic space. Sadly, I see that most ppl overlooked this movie because many were expecting a hard sci-fi with action scenes or a plot based movie instead of a more introspective narrative that used extensive creative license.
So thank you for analysing this important (if not the core) aspect of the story.

I aspire to be a director one day and films like Ad Astra and Interstellar are my 2 favourite Space movies ever. I can understand why people would find this film boring to slow but I enjoyed every second of it. I wasn't bored once, constantly in awe and on the edge of my seat when the action kicked in. This is going to sound really stupid and might look like I'm trivialising the experience of an astronaut with the comparison, but I think I felt the Overview Effect while playing Elite: Dangerous. I spent 150 hours flying around the galaxy staring at nameless planets before I finally unlocked the permit to visit Sol. When I arrived, it was night time over my home country, and I couldn't see anything, so I parked myself in orbit and sat and waited for dawn.
As I watched the light creep across the globe, I was suddenly overcome with an intense feeling of kinship and attachment to the Earth. I'd never really felt that before, because in my mind, the world was the whole World, and how can you have an emotional attachment to literally everything?
But I had spent one hundred and fifty hours seeing how big and empty the galaxy was, and my frame of reference for what constitutes "everything" had gotten significantly bigger. Now the Earth was this cozy little orb in the corner of the Galaxy that I'd been desperately trying to get home to. It was one bright light in a huge and empty ocean of nothingness - an ocean where I'd felt genuine fear over running out of fuel and getting stranded, or being shot down by pirates. But now I was home, and I felt safe. Seeing Earth from that perspective made me feel protected, and I suddenly got the intense feeling that the Earth also needed protecting.
If a video game's simulation of the Earth could do that to me, I can only imagine the magnitude to which that's amplified when you're actually a real astronaut looking down on the real Earth.

Regarding some of the complaints of the movie’s science, I felt like the movie isn’t meant to be viewed literally at all. Just a representation of the struggle we all deal with our parents - communication, and learning to stop chasing their love or approval, instead learning to be one’s own man, cutting ties with them in a sense, like the tether between Roy and his dad floating, like an umbilical cord, resulting in one’s second birth, so to speak.
My only complaint is that its themes are often spelled out too clearly through the voiceover.

I have watched many a video on this film, and I have read way more comments on them. And finally I found another person who had the same association than me. Ad Astra has been much compared to 2001: A Space Odyssey, which makes sense in terms of style; it has been much compared to Apocalypse Now, which makes sense in terms of plot structure and mission statement; but to me, story topic, character(s), focus and tone of narration are most important, style is just a shell or skin or a means of narration, and plot is just the skeleton that the real living, breathing, meaningful meat is being put on, so the essence of Ad Astra for me is most closely related to that of The Tree of Life: The process of questioning "What made me become the person I am, (how) does this define me, how do I feel about this, what can and should I do about this now, where do I want to go from here?"

The Marvelization of cinema is a curse. Any movie without a gag or a joke every 10 seconds is now boring, basically TikTok in movie form. People didn't like this movie because they went in and expected a Marvel movie set in space but were met with a great movie with a deeper hidden meaning. They missed the beauty of the movie shown right in front of them. The complex relationship between a father and a son who always tried to connect with his father by trying to be just like him but couldn't. I guess every son with a complex relationship with their father can relate to this. A constant search for love and validation from your father who never gives it.
