The reason why the little idle adjuster on the dash is always broken is that the people use it the wrong way by just turning it. You should release the tension of the cable first by pushing the gaspedal slightly in before tuning the knob. The little gear inside the knob can't handle the force of all the springs that are attached to the levers of the injectionpump to pull it back to idle. So if you want to adjust with the idle adjuster, rev it a bit up with your footpedal while adjusting.

It is very important to warm up any diesel ( or petrol ) engine , more so if you intend to tow a trailer or carry a heavy load .
The choke on a petrol increases the proportion of fuel in the air going into the cylinders . The ' choke ' on an older diesel vehicle merely raises the engine revs at idle , in order to ensure the oil pump pressure is more than adequate , plus warming the engine to working temperature quicker .
The best way to get longevity out of any engine is to warm it up every time , service it regularly ( especially the oil and filter changes ) and drive it with a degree of mechanical sympathy !
Engines with turbo chargers should also be allowed to idle for a minute or so after had work before being switched off . The reason being the turbo spins at over a 100,000 rpm and its inertia will cause it to keep spinning for a short while after the engine is turned off . On the other hand the oil pump stops pumping oil to the turbo the instant you turn the engine off. Given the heat of the turbo charger excessive wear can occur over time due to lack of oil to its bearings .
I hope this helps . Enjoy your day from Sydney , Australia .

You need new glow plugs, posibly need new fuel injectors?
Turing off rough is not enough vacuum to the Shut off valve. Could be a leak in the vacuum lines, they are easy to repair. Heres a video fixing some vacuum lines.
