If you're new to my channel and videos, hi! I'm Evan Edinger, and I make travel vlogs of all the exciting places I visit. I started travel vlogging about 8 years ago because I wanted to see more of the world and be able to watch back some of my adventures. I also make weekly comedy videos every Sunday on my main channel usually revolving around funny differences between British vs American things! Anyway, thanks for stopping by!

Hi Evan, I don't normally comment on your videos but I just wanted to say how much I've been enjoying your interior design ones. I have no particular interest in interior design, I've just found these videos very soothing. After watching you go through all the stress and anxiety of finding a place to live, it is so rewarding to see you in your home, making the space your own. Good luck with the rest of the decorating! (Also loving your map of Middle Earth in the background :))
Same, Evan!
I know people are making fun of you for having painted white over white but when you compare the finished ceiling to the walls you can definitely tell the difference; the colour is much softer and warmer.
The fact that you painted a white ceiling a very slightly different shade of white is very you, Evan. And I wouldn't have it any other way!
Ceiling looks great man!
Hi Evan, I used to live in an old flat with a perpetually mouldy bathroom ceiling. We once used the blacked-out bathroom to develop some old-school black & white photographs and that killed the mould right dead just from the vapours. We mixed in a splash of photo-chemicals in the next paint job and never had any mould again. So anyway don't do that, it's probably very toxic, but it sure worked haha!
I'm odd. I love to paint. Tip for next time: use a smaller brush to cut in with. My favorite is very short and made of rubber or silicone. Very comfortable in the hand. You're doing fabulous!
Yeah I quickly learned that for the walls! I’ve been using a 2” one and I like the handling much more
The color choice of burnt orange and green are great. I’m actually using those colors for my nursery with a lot of macrame type textures. It’s cozy and earthy
As a Gen-Xer, "feathering" is for hair😂😂😂
I love this! Mistakes, oopsies, and all!!
Glad I’m not the only one who thought of that. Lol 😂
The juxtaposition of perfectionism and chaos is wild to me. Not taking your pics or shade down or covering the floor 100% but painting towards the window in case people come over and judge you for shadows lol. I luv ya Evan keep making your great content.
love seeing the home reno content and you expressing your personal style! next time you are sanding please consider wearing a mask, to help protect your lungs, you're covering and protecting every other surface in these projects except yourself!
That was my first thought when he started sanding!
In Canada, we have a ceiling paint that goes on with a slight pink hue, but dries white. It makes it easier to see where you have painted the ceiling. 🇨🇦👍😁
Genius!
I can't pinpoint exactly why but this video put me in such a good mood. Like your whole mood just seems infectious, your enthusiasm and positivity during the whole process. I think also the fact that you have such a passion for doing this well, when some people would see it as such a mundane and unimportant thing; that you're doing it purely for yourself and you seem like you're enjoying the process. I'm also planning on moving for the first time in my life (out of my family home) next year and this has really inspired me to do some research into the theory of interior design and DIY stuff to make my new place feel like mine :)
Thank you Evan
Haven't even watched it yet but man, can I relate to the impossibly horrendous task painting is! The ceiling being the most hellish of all on a body 😬
First tip: give the paint a really good stir before using it and it won’t be as drippy. You can get a drill attachment for this specific purpose, or just use a stick for 5 minutes.
Yessss this first day I’d forgotten to stir but I got a stirrer and I’ve been mixing much more before painting
I was amazed how you managed to gadget... painting lol. Then the little blue rag comment lol. Thank you Evan.
Hello and welcome back to a man who is so authentic that he's not afraid to shave on camera!
Came for the painting tutorial.
Stayed for Evan's work dungarees
My goodness, I had the joy of painting 3 bedrooms, the kitchen, living room and bathroom ceilings with the help of my mom. You are very lucky to no have to spend time removing the horrible popcorn ceiling which I had in my home. I also was mainly painting the walls and trip, not the ceiling so I'll just give you some all around tips for painting the apartment.
Here's some tips!
1- Use a smaller brush when cutting in, it really helps to make it easier!
2- TAPE! Ceiling and for the walls when you eventually paint them. Tape the edges to avoid getting paint on them. Obviously that isn't a major issues for you since you haven't yet painted the walls but when you do paint them, be careful and add as much tape. I know, it sucks spending so much time adding it, but it makes the job so much more enjoyable when you finish.
3- when you are painting the walls and around electrical outlets or light switches, take off the cover for them. It makes it s lot easier to cut in around them without making a mess.
4- You said it somewhat before but I'll say it again, don't use too much paint on the brush! Especially on the walls because any too much paint when cutting in can leave huge drops that are hard to clean up.
5- If you plan on painting the trim, baseboards or whatever sort of trim you have, do it last. That lets you not have to worry about ruining them and you can tape the flat wall and just freely pain the trim.
6- when doing the walls make sure to cover any holes/bumps, sand, and wash down the walls completely before you even think about popping open the container.
7- Wash after you sand. You don't want all those little dust particles in the ceiling so I recommend washing it with a wrung out wet cloth and then waiting for it to dry before slapping on paint.
By the way I am in no way a professional and this is just what I remember doing when we worked on painting our home but that was around 2 years ago so I have some limited help.
Hold the paint brush toward the metal piece with 4 fingers on one side and thumb on the other. You have more control on the bristles and can glide them.
10:34 just wait until you hear where "dodging and burning" comes from! dodging comes from the photographic darkroom where you let less light from the enlarger hit the light-sensitive paper by covering it up with a small tool (looks like the PS tool, a little round thing on a stick) or in the case of burning, which is the complete opposite were you let more light hit the print darkening that spot! a common way of doing it is by covering the light with your hand and having just a small opening with your fingers, hence why the icon is a hand! you can also use a little card with a hole in it! Let's more light on a specific area darkening that spot!
I'm really enjoying following along on your DIY "journey", Evan. Your bedroom is looking great! I always appreciate how much time and effort you put into everything you do, no matter how much time it takes. :)
Could you maybe make a video about the resources you used to learn more about interior design? Everything’s looking great!
Seeing the possibilities of making a big project fun with a steady apprenticeship that radiates calmness and delight!
Love that bedroom rug!
Now this is the shit I subscribed for
There used to be a saying for something boring, “it’s like watching paint dry.” And now CZcams content has become watching someone paint. 🤣🤣 (I would imagine we saw sone of it dry. 🤣🤣) No hate, just a funny thought. You made it quite interesting. 👍🏻🤣🤣🤣
Oh god, all those mirrors. How are you not going crazy cleaning this? Also very here for your "just gonna try approach". I've grown a hell of basil and learned to build shelves that way :D
As someon who is also learning as they go to redecorate a kitchen (including painting wooden cabinets) this vlog was rather comforting
These videos are me living vicariously through Evan, whilst I imagine owning my own place. The closest I can get right now.
I'll take your word for it about most of those technique benefits, as it doesn't come across in the video (at least, not on my phone screen), but I believe you because I repainted my living room a couple of years ago and the longer I've lived with it the more I've realised just how much of a bodge job I did, and it bugs me.
So many thoughts: So happy for you to try something new. As a parent I just want to help you and ease your fears. As a teacher, I am so proud of you for learning something new. As a fan, I had so many one liners/double-entendres I was thinking. 😏 Most of all I'm just happy for you. ❤️
Thank youuuu! The wall painting and board and batten one I’m even more proud of cause it’s VERY noticeable a difference
Well done Evan! 👏👏
Just watching some of your videos after following your flat buying journey! Maybe you'll never see this comment but they have special paint for bathrooms that are mildew resistant and generally you aren't supposed to use flat paint in the bathrooms because its less resistant to mildew (its more rough a porous hence the matte/flat look but also allows spores and bacteria to build up easier). If your bathroom has the proper ventilation maybe you won't have to deal with that but just in case it comes up in the future.
I am 👏living👏 for this new travel channel content! Also love your decorating choices, the flat looks so good so far!!
the worst thing about sanding is the dust. it just gets everywhere and keeps appearing for months
I’m glad you’re getting a chance to see if you like painting in your rehab of your house. I know I hate it just because as you found out it should be called prepping not painting. But now that it’s your own place you get to choose the color, whether it’s a cool white or a warm white.
I don't see any difference, but I'm happy that you're happy :)
The careful chaos of this video was great lol
Place is turning out just amazing! I am an app designer and despite being some sort of a designer I do not think I would trust myself decorating and planning the whole thing out, I believe I would not be as successful in it as you have been! And massive props for so much DIY, I’d never dare 🙈
Indeed. My skill level for DIY is best suited to coming up with funds to pay someone :D, and I'm not a risk taker, so can't imagine trying anything myself.
Your house is really starting to come together. Congrats on the 6mth mark of property ownership!
Well!! I've only ever sanded a wooden floor. I never sanded a ceiling! Such a perfectionist. Very impressive.
Just be glad you dont have a staircase to paint... really tricky...
I very much like your choice in bedroom light fixtures. I definitely don’t have the same one🥸
Steady on Dexter.
Always amazes me how a little refresh lifts the feel of your space! Looks crisp and clean! Where did you get the Jute rug from btw?
Glad that the people who renovated our house before we moved here used a respectable neutral color and not bright white. There’s a lot of weird patched areas where you can tell there were holes in the wall etc but the house is from 1960 so it’s to be expected lol
I realise i'm a bit late on this video, but if you ever decide to do more painting in the future you should avoid getting paint inside the metal ferrule. Its almost impossible to remove and destroys the brushes.
Im trying to buy a house right now so we have room and space but also so i can paint the walls any color i want. Alot of apartments in the states wont let you paint anything in the place your staying at and you have to put it back the way you found it when you move out.
If you sand off the mistakes of the last professionals first, your DIY looks much more professional. That feels profound.
I’m psyching myself up to paint two ceilings in my house and I’m absolutely dreading it 😩😩😩
You can do it!! I just finished re-painting my bedroom (including the ceiling) and the toughest part was the primer portion or the base coat. I went from a darker color to a lighter color. The rest was easy!! Took me a couple of day because or work and life!!
It is brave of you to paint it all yourself. Michael Petherick (Doing it Ourselves) says that you always get a better result with a brush, than with a roller.
Thank you for the video!
With a brush you lose the consistent texture achieved with a roller
Kinda jealous of the smooth ceilings as Im stuck with the bumpy gravel texture 😅
Could we have the interior design books in the desc too? I'm more likey to get to reading before actually doing, haha. Renter.
I'm guessing you probably did this but didn't film it but for others. Between the sanding and painting stages you should wash the surface to take off dirt and dust.
Painting is always seems like a great idea but the prep is an arse ache.
I was going to comment on your BBC rant, but I thought it wasn't worthwhile as the debate generated more heat than light.
I didn't have a TV when I bought my first house to save the cash. I couldn't have saved that cash if it was just tax. I was lucky that the radio licence had been abolished by then.
My staff gave me an old TV so I had to buy a Black and White licence.
Anyway, even that TV set (which could only receive BBC1 and ITV) was better than watching your paint dry!
Keep up the normally good work.
Uh... After opening the paint do you not need to stir it? Standard practice in the US anyways...
You: the builders have left me quite a few boogers
Me: oh GROSS what kind of a grown adult--
You: that's just a word I picked up. I mean little dots
Me: oh thank God.
I was very concerned about the quality of your flat builders, Evan 🤣
You should be haha they left me rubbish under my plinths and left me gaping holes to caulk
@@EvanEdingerTravel well that's still not great but at least they didn't leave nose pickings behind 🤣
Loved the video, but was it just me or was anyone else shouting at the screen at the 3 pictures and light fitting still up as Evan rollered the ceiling 🤣 love having OCD. Looks great Evan, just remember to take your Artwork off the walls when doing anymore ceilings 🤣 Hugs from a fellow DIYer..🤗
I cba haha I knew I’d have to take them off to do the walls but now they’re back up!
@@EvanEdingerTravel just watch out for the hidden speckles the rollers spit off lol I had them all over a full length floor to ceiling window 🙈 and had to spend 2 days scraping them off with a Stanley blade...Never made that mistake again!! Am so happy that you finally got the home you well deserve !! Looking forward to what you do next, always great quality content Evan, hugs from way up in Scotland 🏴
Masking tape? That brown not very sticky tape that you can use to cover parts of the wall that you don’t want to paint, like the ordinary wall supporting the ceiling. Masking tape is very helpful in getting neat edges… all you do is peel it off when the paint is dry.
When I had my roof painted they used rollers for all of it.
when you did 'first step' and it wasnt stir the paint that was my ick
the drippy drip was the second, not trying to shade but i- aaah
I'm confused as to why you're painting a newly painted white ceiling...white?
Cause it’s a warmer white that ties in better with the colours I’ve chosen for the rest of the room
I can paint hate doing it though so I feel you're pain
Doing white on white on the ceiling was definitely ambitious. Ceilings are the worst.
Maybe im just dense but it looks like the same color before and after lol
It’s more noticeable in person it seems. It is a very subtle glow. Difference between a cool white and a warm one
You're painting your brand new white flat... white? Are you ok?
Came here to ask about the white…
It’s a WARM white!
@@EvanEdingerTravel How much unnecessary co2 did this pointless exercise generate, would you say?
Why are you painting the white ceiling white?
You see, it’s warm white
I used a soft broom to pant my ceilings…
WHAT
Why is this on the Travel channel?
It’s more of a second channel. Has been since inception
Bare feet! Not very safe I feel.
dude!!!!! Stir your dang paint first, hhhahhahahaahah
Michaelangelo Edinger. DIY vlogger! It's a good idea to show how one of US would do these home jobs,we can learn along with you, maybe see mistakes to avoid,or handy hacks. Not that I'm painting any ceiling. I'd pay a man - or a woman to do that. Ive always thought of Evan as a cerebral person because when I started watching he was mainly sat at a computer AND - HE CAN DO MATHEMATICS. That preparation reminded me of how, when you do a job at home there is so much stuff to move you never even notice is there. Great job and good for you, loving and taking a pride in your home.
