You should go to Porto (Oporto in english) next time. You'll be amazed how a small country like ours can be so diverse.
A true Portuguese won't care about the Hola translation, we love when people show interest and happiness towards our culture and that's more than enough. Also, the surf instructor was "hard" because we love when people enjoy and are happy in our country and we might get a bit blind by it and try to give the best experience and create a bond out of it, the language barrier makes it hard for us to realize that we might need to slow down.
Portuguese people often neglect our own culture, but we always appreciate and are very happy when someone appreciates our culture :) it makes our day,

Its cheaper but not at all because lack of people or turism in fact we are known for turism and we often are the desired vacation by most other countrys in europe. Its cheaper cause on average we make less money than most countrys.
