FIRST LOOK: Gordon Murray Automotive T.33 Spider | Top Gear

  • Think ‘convertibles’ and Gordon Murray is hardly going to be the first name that pops into your head. Convertibles tend to be heavier, less rigid and worse off aerodynamically than a hard-top car. And if you know anything about the sorts of cars that Gordon Murray designs, those aren’t just trifling niggles. And yet, here it is. The first Gordon Murray Automotive roadster: the new T.33 Spider.
Anyone for a 608bhp Cosworth V12 and no pesky ceiling muffling the 11,100rpm engine note?
The T.33 Spider is of course the second T.33 model announced after the hard-top coupe back in 2021, so lots of the stats and facts are familiar. The bespoke naturally aspirated 3.9-litre drives the rear wheels. Only 100 examples will be built. There are two seats inside (choose either left- or right-hand drive) and thanks to a luggage compartment in the nose and two lockers ahead of the rear wheels concealed by beautiful rear-hinged blades, there’s a total of 295 litres of luggage capacity. That’s about a third more than you get from, say, a Ferrari 296 Spider. But you’d expect that, given this costs about six times as much…
But why are you reading this? Hit play and let Professor Gordon Murray and Top Gear Magazine’s Ollie Kew be your guide to this hyper spider.

Love that sheer hatred Murray has for touchscreens. Don't get me wrong, I love touch screens in cars but imo, when we are talking about cars well worth in millions, analogue gauges just look so much better, if done right. Case in point, that new DeTomaso P72 or whatever. But yeah, love that interior.

Dumb Tech. Needs 150 steps into the menus to change the air con setting, and you have to stop or take your eyes off the road. And none of them are as good as a phone - laggy, buggy, crashy, outdated. You wear gloves they don't work. Hands slightly wet or sweaty? Don't work. Buttons, knobs, dials, those are true touch devices that don't need your eyes. Touch screens are touch operated SIGHT screens, not touch devices. It's a car, not a phone. A car could just have a place to mount a phone or tablet with USB or Wireless charging and run everything off the phone. Gordon still remembers that cars are meant for driving.

    • @srinathk3830

@@srinathk3830 I think if implemented right, touch screens can work well. I own a 2017 Volvo S90 and the climate controls are perma fixed on the screen. So after a few times, you automatically remember where they are without looking away. Their screens also work with gloves because they know that due to the weather in their home country, everyone wears gloves. Its tiny things that make or break the driver's experience. I saw the climate control system on the new BMW i7 and wow, what a clusterfuck of bad design.

One thing i can say... i love the fact it is its own car. meaning it looks nothing like anything else currently being produced. i can surely see the eco's of great cars from the 60's in its design especially Lotus. God it truly looks like a hell of a drivers car.
