Dinghy cruising tent dilemma

- The travel budget overspent this year, so no canvas tent making in 2023. So, a dilemma do I stick with this old cheapie tarp or do I buy a proper bushcraft waterproof one?
I have been having similar problems organising a tent for my 14 foot Trident Dinghy. I have a few 'Bushcraft' tarps but none which fit without some surgery which I am reluctant to do. So for now anyway, I'm using a cheap Polytarp which come in a wide variety of sizes so I was able to get a near perfect fit, beam and length. It does the trick even in heavy rain so for this summer at least, problem solved. 👍
I've always used taros but I. Heavy rain this one occasionally leaks. I sleep in a gortex bivvy bag as well but it's still a pain.
Hi Steve. I'm at a similar point in that I need to make a temporary bivvi shelter/cover for the Pathfinder and iv'e been experimenting with my various Bushcraft tarps....bad news is that none of them seem to work very well without tarp clips. You're always welcome to borrow mine and see if one works for you. Long term I know that i'm going to have to make a proper tent and iv'e been studying Howard Rice's designs on Southern Cross. I think mine is going to need a stainless steel tube hoop like a sprayhood cover to support and that's one of the limiting factors alongside the cost of fabric.
Kind offer thanks Steven. Might take you up on that. The only issue is the tarp leaks under intense rainfall. A shower and it seems to cope.
Get a ripstop nylon tent tarp, add extra waterproofing by dissolving a tube of silicone in turps and paint on ( really works) and use 7mm fibreglass tent poles for support( keeps the sides away from you when there is condensation on the inside, cheers Paul

Also a simple tarp for gardening will work ( I have it on my second dinghy, the Goat Island Skiff).
I always do but this one seems to leak a bit 😆
