LESSON SUMMARY
There are three basic steps to getting a jazz swing feel on the piano. First, learn to play and interpret the melody with a swing feel. Secondly, accompany the melody using diatonic 7th chords. Lastly, apply a swing pattern to your left hand. You can use these three steps to create solo piano arrangements for dozens of swing tunes in your Real Book. Using "Fly Me to the Moon" as an example, we'll break down each step of the jazz swing style on piano for the complete beginner including:
- Swinging the Melody
- Understanding the Chord Symbols
- Identifying the Guide Tones of Each Chord
- Applying a Swing Groove

My weekend plan. Thanks Jonny. Keep at the good work.
Great Jonny, and love the dynamic passion too. For me as a true beginner for ever, i had to break it down further with starting first with the root only at the LH. Then root+guide tones, finally understood for the first time, thx tooooo : Jonny !
This is awesome Jonny... This is gonna be my agenda this weekend...
Thank you for the video, Jonny. I am about as much of a beginner as one can be, my first keyboard is being delivered tomorrow. I have been looking at several channels for beginner type lessons, and yours has joined my list as a channel I will be watching much more to learn how to play.
Looks amazing with complete chords and keys to follow
Jonny .... you are fantastic !! 😎 all seems very simple after your lesson... don’t stop your video ... thank you

Thx Jonny for the guide tones explanation on this tune, makes it clearer to me.
One of his best lessons ever!
Love these "simple" lessons! Total beginner here...
The playing to the backing track is smooth!
Great teaching!
(I have a two octave "piano" so this compact playing suits my "piano" very well...) :D
Danke für dieses ausgezeichnete Tutorial , das sehr Spaß macht
Excellent!!! Thank you very much!
Loved the way you played it in the intro. So fricking groovy. Can't wait to learn this song :)
Thank you for this. It's a catchy tune. After playing keys for decades, I finally enjoy diving a bit into some of this simple jazz stuff. Excellent and enjoyable tune to use to start learning a bit about these concepts.
Thank you Johnny. Love it
Thank you Jonny!!!
Thank you for this! After a couple of days I was able to get this down, basically, without the guide tones. I may add them later.
“...THE MELODY IS VERY VERY SIMPLE...”, BUT IT’S VERY VERY WONDERFUL!!!!
Verry good lesson, thank to much, Sir

EXCELENT - FROM BRASIL THANK YOU SO MUCH - I'I TRYING TO LEARN WITH YOUR HELP
You are Amazing my friend
Geat and awesome teacher🙏🙏🙏
Another great video. Starts slowly to draw us in and is structured carefully to make sure no one (who is putting the practice in) gets left behind. The final version gives most players something to aim for. I only started learning the piano at 55 during lockdown. I knew I was never going to go back to page one of teach yourself piano book and take lessons. I had a gut feeling there had to be a more enjoyable less stressful way. People like you on youtube have given people like me the chance to make nice noices on a keyboard. I know I'll never be a full pianist as I have no intention of learning to read music etc but I can see that with your videos and lots of practice I can do a decent, swinging version of this classic......and lots of others. Thank you so much
Amei a aula. I love this music, love 💘 music.... love 💘 love 💘 love 💘
Merci pour ce cours :-)
🙌🏽 Thank you !
Thanx
Hi, just found you , thank you so much, I will begin this evening!
I love this thing by Bart Howard and play often it with harmonica
Very interesting piano lessons
The perfect lesson for my level. Thanks a lot Jonny. Would you please consider to teach us how to play Garota de Ipanema? It would be great!
SUPER.
What a wonderful teacher do you teach girl from Ipanema I do love that song
You're the best.
Jonny love 💕!
I can already play this but I didn't know the chords so this really helps.
Ура ❗Дождалась 😁😘
Nice😄
WOW!
Absolutely fabulous, Jonny. Thank you so much.
these lesson are great thank you Jonny. My slight frustration, which I've noticed in a few of your vids, is that we don't build toward the final piece. in this example we learn the song with overlapping hands and then the guide tones separate the hands. Could we have learnt the left hand in the guide tone position to begin with with all 4 notes and removed them when the left hand rhythm comes in? the more obvious frustration is that this is in no way a beginner lesson. I've only been playing a year and I find it challenging pre-guide tones. I'll repeat this is still an amazing free resource and i am grateful.
Hi Johnny, I love your videos and I've learned a lot from your tutorials. Just want to ask if Emaj7 to G7 is fit when played together?
This is a great lesson, and as usual, Jonny is one of the very few beginner Jazz teachers. Thanks.
Can you please do "how to play "moanin"??? :)
Love your Videos!!
I just love your lessons and I’m trying to learn some more advanced theory. Would the E7 in this chord progression, be a secondary dominant chord of the Am7?
E7 is a secondary dominant in the C Mayor but it is a natural dominant to the Am…
E7 is the V to the Am I but in the tonality is the III Dominant…hope it helps
I look forward to more songs using the WHITE NOTES.
Thank you for the interesting video! Which program do you use for creating this video?
Now, if I could just get my cat to leave me alone when I sit down at the piano!
Shoot it. Yer welkume...
Sounds like you need to send your cat…
flying to the moon.
Send him to Abu Dhabi

Nice video's.
What's the software you use that shows the notes?
Thank you so much for this video. It helped me as a beginner base player to understand the harmony.
Well jonny I'm 83 and really want to fill a life time wish, to play the piano. hope you will help me
Hello Johnny,Can you indicate which device you use for the bass Line accompaniment. It sounds very jazzy. Is it a Roland box, others, an application computer ? Thanks for your vidéos and Hello. Jean-Paul, France 👍😜
That is one of Frank Sinatra's best songs and oh my God I can't wait to learn this later on today after I get some rest thank you so much for this
so how's your progress?
Love this💕where do i download the sheet music please, i don’t see it in the link? Also, I noticed it says beginner in the video but then, when I go to the link, it says skill level intermediate 😊
great lesson! Where can I find the music sheet?
Amazing. I love your lessons. For this to be *complete* it would have been awesome to have suggestions of a scale or two for improvising over this chord progression.
It is complete. it’s how to play the song not improvise over it. How much time do you think this man has? Do you not realise how he possibly spends thousands of hours already on these videos, for FREE?!!!!! Good grief some folk not only want to be flown to the moon they want it on a stick 😂
Quite good for early intermediate players but not beginners.
Great lesson, absolutely greaaat ! Learning for 2 years now. I finally understood and practiced the (CMaj) scale, the related chords and guide tones 3rd 7th , thx to your lesson. The only point: if you keep saying "soooo simple ", i fly to the us, teach you brand new thing (like complex maths), and say "so simple" a thousand times , haha :-) just joking, really, a big enooormous thx !
Yeah, this not exactly "simple" stuff for a beginner... But it is good stuff!
That moment when you keep having to rewind and you keep hearing him say “it’s so simple”
Is the secondary dominant A7 in the first ending a "secondary dominant of a secondary dominant (D7 being the "first secondary dominant")?
This a Excellent Tutorial. You make it look so easy and it is. It only took me an hour to play the song. Great teaching.
When you say white notes, it got my attention right away. Many thanks for making this song look so easy to play. WHITE NOTES. LOVE IT😊❤
14:40 👍
Thanks!
Hi , I can’t find the backing track download from your website . Can you tell me how to find it? Thanks!
Slash chord on the song Dm/g over c
What the notes from chord in 00:06 ?
What backing track can u recommend?
where can i get the downloadable lead sheet and backup?
Although I get it I think a lot of people will get stuck when you play the guide tones as a fifth and not a fourth. It would’ve been really helpful to explain this and to also explain that you must practice both to get the muscle memory, otherwise it becomes really confusing. Thanks for getting me thinking about it though and practising it x
I have paid for download capability. However I thought there was a way to download and printout the music being played. Also don't know how to find the backing track. What am I missing. Richard T.
What is a good source for lead sheets?
Please tell me how to download the backing track ?
