  • HOW TO, DIY
    2004 Roadtrek Popular 190. Similar for Chevrolet Popular 170 and Versatile. Pumping/dumping the black and grey water tanks. Winterizing.
    Roadtrek has added one more step since writing the manual, you need to OPEN the city water fill valve for 30 seconds after filling everything with Antifreeze. This allows the antifreeze to flow into the pipe between the tank and the city water connection. Then CLOSE the city water fill valve.
    Be sure to read your instructions before winterizing your Roadtrek as this is a critical task, I do not take responsibility for your RV and/or anything that may happen to it. Roadtrek also has a video which was completed on a new Versatile that you may wish to watch.

    I have to believe that some effort to clean up dirt & grime especially around the shower drain would have been helpful.

    Thank you so much! It's like another language but you explained it so well!
    I'm brand new to all the use of things and you showed me the little secret lever behind the toilet and that the pinkish foamy stuff from the tap that hurt my fingers is the residue of antifreeze after they dewinterized the van for me! Thank God I didn't drink it cuz I seriously thought I would be able to!!!
    But can you please explain the difference between city water and fresh or tank water?

      Hi Rita, I have another video for the water system.

    Yeah I know it's a Saturday... I was advised somewhere online that your Black & Grey Tank should be about 3/4 before dumping. My Black tank is holding fine, but, BUT my Grey tank keeps spilling water, and will not fill. Yikes. I thought I had all the valves correct. Chuck

      I normally dump my tanks at the same time I take on fresh water so I've never had a problem with over filling. It's possible that your level indicators aren't working correctly.

    Wow, this so helpful, thank you. OK, my concern is the coach and chassis batteries. I'll be removing them both for storage (their storage requirement). I have read that removing the chassis battery resets or defaults the computer. Any experience anyone?

    • @SteveRivett
      @SteveRivett  Před 2 lety +1

      We have a main chassis battery disconnect and the van will run rough and stall the first time we use it in the spring. It will restart after initially stalling and run OK after a few minutes.

      @@SteveRivett Thank you Stephen. This is positive news. I guess removing the battery is about as big a disconnect you can get. I decided to store this 190 instead of a cover; I still have to winterize. This is costing me about the same, maybe less. The property owner requires ALL batteries be removed. I'm glad it's weeks away. Thank you again! Chuck

    a quick question, i am wondering why you used the exterior water tank for feeding the antifreeze thru the system? i recall (either from the owners manual or from the roadtrek youtube videos) to use the interior tank. Not sure it makes a difference either way.

    • @SteveRivett
      @SteveRivett  Před 3 lety +1

      Both tanks need some if they have had water in them. The exterior tank drain is well above the bottom of the tank so you need to put a bunch in there to prevent it from freezing. If you are going skiing or something you can have the outdoor tank winterized without doing the entire van.

    coupla thoughts... i use compressed air to clear out the water in the lines and just add antifreeze to the p-traps and gray and black tanks; i didn't understand what you said about the water heater - it was as if you didn't realize that in winter mode it is entirely bypassed; and i wonder what was the black wire coming out of the opening for the power cord near the outdoor shower hookups?; lastly, when the inverter was upgraded, were the cables also upgraded?

    • @SteveRivett
      @SteveRivett  Před 4 lety

      I am aware that many people use compressed air but I did not want to develop a method other than what is in the Roadtrek manual. These vehicles are very expensive (and Roadtrek went bankrupt and liquidated their spare parts) so I do not want to take any liability in instructing people in doing something different than what Roadtrek wants.
      The black wire is part of the trailer wiring, it comes down from the rear driver's side tail light and provides the reverse signal. It is dangling because I removed the trailer connector...will be redoing the connector and adding trailer brakes at some point.
      The wiring was not upgraded, the inverter was very poorly installed prior to when the van entered our family. The Roadtrek wiring sucks as it has lots of small breakers and a tiny contactor plus the cable is just #6 I think? I have a 50' roll of 4/0 in the shed and a hydraulic crimper to remedy that.

      @@SteveRivett thanks for getting back to me on my comments. i wonder if you might have any idea how hard it would be to drop the black tank and fresh water tank? I may need to get some transmission work done and the mechanic told me the tanks are blocking the cross member.

    • @SteveRivett
      @SteveRivett  Před 4 lety +1

      @@ManWander I'm not too sure, it may be better to have him pull the transmission out on an angle or have him pull the back off the transmission. I wouldn't remove the tanks but loosening them up to push them out of the way may be adequate.

    Did you ever figure out why you don't get water at the sink on the hot water side of the tap?

    • @SteveRivett
      @SteveRivett  Před 4 lety +1

      No, I haven't spent any time on it as it's buried in snow at the moment. I need to go through the hot water tank bypass valve positions and verify them one last time. After that I need to start opening the lines and faucet to see where the water is being blocked. I assume it is full of corroded hot water tank anode somewhere. I could also check the faucet in the bathroom and outside as they are off in a different direction than the kitchen sink.

    How do you drain the interior water tank?

    • @SteveRivett
      @SteveRivett  Před 4 lety

      The valve beside the tank is the drain. When you open it you will have water come out the back of the van below the right rear tail light.
