- Featuring the Who's who of the calypso world. A lovely memory of brotherhood and camaraderie. Many calypsonians contributed to this effort to raise funds for support of the efforts to curb the humanitarian crises happening in Africa at the time. Full credit list at the end of this clip.

I was 12 years old when this song came out. This brought back so many memories of Trinidad and Tobago. I'm still watching it in 2023
Me was 21 years and now watching this in 2024.
So many of these calypsonians are no more, may they all rest in peace.
No matter my age this is one song that raises my pores each time I hear it. Truly a gem song of the Caribbean. If we as a people heed the words of this song not only when Africa needed the help but even now, it should be applied. Many children and families suffer silently.
Great song Great singers but Robbie Greenidge should be given a national award for that solo

I still grieve Michael Simmons' death (the frontline despers player wearing the white sleeveless t-shirt standing to the right of Robbie Greenidge). After his passing, combined with the passing of Clive Bradley & Bertie Marshall, Desperadoes were NOT the same. And I doubt if we'll live to see those particular breeds of Trinidadians again. What made Michael Simmons special is that he was a born-bred 2nd generation Desperadoes man

A priceless gem from the golden age of Calypso. This is most definitely the best collaborative Calypso produced and also one simply one of the best ever! And the video was worthy of the effort...showing all the legends making their contribution for the cause! Makes you a bit nostalgic, doesnt it?

Patois, was a mix of languages used by different people to create a local dialect and while they are words and phrases from West African cultures used as well as Amerindian words its mostly a combination of French and Spanish at least in Paramin and St Lucia . In 1986 South Africa was an aparteid state that we economically boycotted . Ethopia and Sudan had severe drought and famine which because of water collection laws along the Nile enforced by Eygpt on threat of invasion both countries or all three countries today( because Sudan split in a civil war betweeen ethnic Arabs and indegenous Africans) still face the threat of drought . Nigeria today is plauged with a terrorist insurgency and religous cleansing and Ghana has child slaves working for Cadburys. Not to mention other conflict zones like Sierra Leone or the Democratic Republic of the Congo or the current refuge crisis and slave markets in Lybia. Somalian famine, piracy or the fact it hasnt had an elected govt since the 90s are all non issues .So this song is not relevant and wasnt relevent and you are educated about Africa and the rest of us is dunce . Or maybe you just never saw the Pulitzer prize-winning picture of the corbeaux eating the toddler alive . Either way take win.
You have to understand we......at the time were heavily influenced by the narrative taught to us in school and media. When this was done it was done with good intentions and a pure heart. We didn't know better!!!! We really thought we would be helping.
