Stevenage railway station serves the town of Stevenage in Hertfordshire, England.
The station is 27 miles or 45km north of London King's Cross on the East Coast Main Line.
Stevenage is served and managed by Great Northern. It is also served by Hull Trains and London North Eastern Railway.
The present station opened for trains on 23 July 1973, however its official opening was not until September of that year.
This replaced the previous station, which was located 1.5 kilometres to the north and further away from the centre of the new town.
The original Stevenage railway station was built in 1850 by the Great Northern Railway. There was significant hostility towards the railway being built there, at that time, due to the negative effect on and the inevitable decline it would cause to local coach businesses.
In 1946, Stevenage was one of the first communities selected to become a 'New Town', - as part of the governments New Towns Act, which resulted in a new town centre being created. Then in 1973, the railway station was relocated to its new location.
The station had two separate ticket offices, Great Northern and London North Eastern Railway, but in practice, each sell each other's tickets, if this confuses you as it does us there are also seven different ticket machines.
In December 2013, the previous train operator, First Capital Connect, started completely refurbishing the station; introducing automatic ticket barriers, passenger lifts between platform and street level, and redevelopment of the concourse area and retail units.

The works were due to be completed by April 2014, but were delayed. Since Great Northern took over the franchise in September 2014, these works have now been completed.
So which trains stops at Stevenage ?
Since May 2018 Great Northern services have been swapped with Thameslink services, and now the only Great Northern trains are one southbound departure per hour to Moorgate, - and some peak-hour trains between London King's Cross and Peterborough.
Stevenage is also served by some London North Eastern Railway (LNER) services on the East Coast Main Line, from Edinburgh Waverley, Newcastle, York, Newark North Gate, and to London Kings Cross.
In addition, Hull Trains offer a very limited service on their
    Hull to King's Cross route.
Thameslink offer East Coast Mainline and Great Northern routes, from Peterborough and Cambridge and stations in-between, (including Stevenage ), becoming connected to Thameslink and destinations south of central London.

Don't forget the new platform being built at Stevenage. This is for trains on the Hertford Loop and will take those trains away from the main lines.

The new platform 5 is my favourite as you can see a train coming from Moorgate terminating at Stevenage since platform 5 was built to relieve the bottleneck on the ECML and Hertford Loop line. And Class 717s now operates on.

Some of Great Northern trains travelling from Cambridge, Cambridge North, Ely & King’s Lynn also sometime stop at Stevenage. And a new bay terminus platform is also to be built for Great Northern trains to/from Moorgate via Hertford North to terminate at Stevenage. Which are the Class 717.

How can you mention Newark North Gate and not Darlington or Doncaster? Two of the most pioneering railway towns that there has ever been and not a mention!!

John Wyldbore I think the idea was that he was listing stations that LNER services serving Stevenage originate from. Granted would still be wrong as the Newark North Gate trains now start at Lincoln Central.
