Fascinating British documentary about a family living a typical suburban life, with FIFTEEN CHILDREN.
Ian and Sue Povey are 45 and 43 respectively, have been married for 25 years and live in a quiet road near UK’s Swindon city. Ian is a systems analyst and Sue is a Mum to their fifteen children...
Super mom Sue loves children and has never gone more than two years and three months between deliveries. She has been pregnant for over eleven years. So how exactly do they cope?
With unrestricted access to their daily lives, we will take a candid look at the Povey’s world of ordered chaos. With cameras throughout their six bedroomed house, we will follow them through their daily routine. From queuing for the bathroom, breakfast, packed lunches, getting them all to the right classrooms of the right schools… through eight loads of washing a day, £200 supermarket trips, homework, bath time and bed.
Ian’s salary isn’t huge. In one month the family get through 61 loaves of bread, 62 packets of breakfast cereal, 140 burgers, 30 litres of squash and 40lbs of chips. How on earth do they survive financially? And how do the kids feel about having so many brothers and sisters?
This documentary follows the Povey family through school semester-time into the even more chaotic school summer holidays.

I come from a family of 12 children and I only keep in touch with 2 sisters who, like me, guard their personal space jealously. I hate having crowds around me and need my own space every day. Even my house feels crowded at times so I have to go out for walks regularly. I have my 2 youngest teens at home, and for me home can still feel crowded with just the 3 of us. Having to share a bed with 2 sisters growing up and wearing hand me downs and never having a room of my own left it’s impact on me for life, as I also suffer from sensory overload. I only wanted 3 children max, so I could give them what they needed to thrive in life. I found myself always buying them new clothes, shoes, personal belongings etc (no hand me downs for any of them, not even baby clothes), and they had their own rooms and plenty of personal space. There were many happy times growing up in a big family, but I grew up and grew out of the big family dynamic, and went out into a big wide world where I could breathe and find myself and be who I am. I always felt that I was a rebel to conformity of being forced into a mold of what the family stood for. The rest of my family all stay in touch and follow “the family code” so to speak. I definitely struggled to thrive in a big family and felt that I had fallen through the cracks. But I am happy for the choices I made and I thrive away from the big family model. The last 20 years have been the happiest of my life. That’s when I made the decision to choose to raise my 2 youngest children away from the rest of my family (1700 kms) apart after my mum passed away. I raised my first child in a foreign country for a decade and only kept in contact with my mum during that time (the last decade of her life). My children have told me they did not miss having extended family around because we were always busy being a busy little family of our own. Both my mum and dad were raised as orphans in institutions and I think that influenced their choice to have a big family. Some of my siblings have big families too (8 - 9 children). Looking back I see that I was always a part of other large institutions (boarding school, church, army, university, in laws), and I realise that all of that “crowding” of people in my background affected me deeply. I love the wide open spaces, hate social events and crowded public spaces and avoid them. I have many awesome neighbours who have become family to us, but we all give each other breathing and personal space in between swapping plants, sharing cups of tea, exchanging gifts, social meals, and chats at the front, side or back fence about our children, garden and pets. The neighborhood/community we live in has helped us with a sense of family and belonging and fulfillment. Totally awesome community. I retired early and study online now (photography and art) and definitely could not go back to working in environments filled with lots of people and devices. I think the word I would use is “stress”. All that crowding of people around me earlier in my life equalled huge amounts of stress. I think it was the stress of their demands and being scrutinised constantly by so many people (performance/behaviour/testing etc) as well as having to share limited resources with so many people (including floor space). Total burn out. I now hate formality and love a casual laid back lifestyle with the simple basics of life. But I adore the Radford family videos and my hat goes off to the parents for fulfilling their parental roles and stepping up to the demands they created. I do feel for the teenage boys though, all stuck in that one room.

Thanks for the insight. I feel sorry for all of the kids, this kind of is child abuse. The kids are probably suffering from low self esteem depression and have soo many complexes. They're all are probably wondering why they and their siblings aren't good enough for their parents, wondering why their parents aren't satisfied with the ones they already have. I bet most of them feel unloved because most of them probably dont get enough quality time with their parents. They all seem miserable cramped up like that, sharing rooms, always being around their parents and siblings 24/7, never going out on their own because when they reach a certain age, their parents make them look after kids and do mostly everything. They need their own rooms, own space, enough quality time with parents. Enough time outside to do what they want to do ..older ones alone. They all need friends, and to be able to go to friends houses or out alone or supervised away from home. They need to be all loved and respected equally, even if their opinions and plans for their own life differ from that of the parents. Poor Chris. All of their childhood is being robbed from them. Off camera, I bet they all stay in the house or not too far away outdoors (like in the front of the house) within the exception of to go to school if they do. I also think that off camera the parents probably scream ,degrade, and yell at them all of the time. The kids aren't even healthy and given proper nutrition. No ironing should be done ever unless necessary. That probably means that the clothes are left sitting for some time, instead of being taken right out the dryer to fold and put away.
These are wonderful parents raising very normal and beautiful children. There is so much love between them. 47:12
I believe Chris does not enjoy the bigger family, and should not feel any guilt for that, he seems to be quite the philosopher. We are different, and the parents should know that better than most. This family is self-sufficient, so it is really their choise how they arrange their life. All the best to all of them!

@@pillowtalk1925 it is absolutely truthful. You think that they really are able to give these 15 kids of all different ages, different needs, all the attention they need and want 24/7. Even the kids on these videos of large families say that and most are unhappy. All of these large families use the older children to basically raise and parent the younger ones. Once the children become a certain age in all these large families such as this one they get paired with a kid to basically look after and be responsible for. Even 5 year olds be looking after the younger ones. That's how most if not all these large families operate and function. They rob most of the children of their childhood and load them with responsibilities that their parents should be making sure get done themselves even if they have to pay people. Then most of these families try to con the older ones who are college age, close to it, or older to not move out . They fill them with horror stories hoping to scare them about the real world. The ones who do pull away and move out are guilt tripped and manipulated into coming over as often as possible to help. These people exploit their children for free labor and a check. Think realistically. Two people cannot give all of their 15 children all the individualized love and attention that they need and want when wanted. All of them barely get attention. If these people had only 4 children they'd probably wouldn't have anymore if they truly raised them. These people are addicted to having children and exploit their children for hopeful financial gain and fame. If they were really dedicated to their children and invested in, and their emotional development, overall development, and well being they wouldn't have had soo many or keep having. The children that they had already and that they could actually manage themselves (perhaps 2-4) would have been enough for them.

Another family i forgot there name they are from Instagram an they adopted most of there children from the system. They take care of them. The mom mostly posts vidoes aboit how much she cooks/clean while the kids go to school an how they spend time with one another not all but family’s are neglecting. Wouldn’t be surprised there’s more who are neglecting who just have 2 kids. Some parents have the time while others don’t everyone’s different

They can afford shoes, but not unnecassery ones just because they look pretty. The food is ridiculous. Rice, beans, boiled potatoes etc would be cheaper than nuggets and chips, that's just wrong prioritizing. Stop ironing clothes 3 hours a day and prepare healthy food instead. And the kids should help more.

@@dude988 I think nuggets and chips are ok, but only have them 1 or 2 times a week. And absolutely NO ironing , except in dire need!! And yes, then mom would have time to fix healthier and lower cal meals!!!

I have watched a lot of these shows like this and I always see a lot of the women obsessed with ironing. And they iron a lot of stuff that really doesn't need it. They should let the ironing go and enjoy time with their children. Babies don't care if their sheets or clothes are ironed.

@@shadowkyber2510 Its not a U.K thing. Plenty of Australians ironed clothes but don't forget the climate difference. School uniforms in many parts of OZ polyester shorts with polo type shirts and trackpants which don't need ironing as opposed to old fashioned style uniforms maybe with kilts, woollen trousers, button down shirts ect and shorts and t-shirts worn at home for most of the year in Oz. Lighter and less clothing. Doesn't get that cold in OZ and certainly doesn't snow like UK where they wear more and thicker clothes, long sleeves and long trousers.
@@amandawitherspoon5225 that's for hygiene. You never boil your clothes while washing, right? For example if i will have a guest staying overnight I'll iron bed clothes. The same goes for newborn's clothes and stuff. Some clothes really don't need ironing, but some really need it.

It's because she hangs her clothes on the line to dry. A dryer would take the wrinkles out. But on the line can be very wrinkly

a dryer makes a ton of difference for sure! I grew up having to use a wringer washer and hang clothes and iron. By age 7 I was in charge of doing all that! It was a horrible amount of work.
U can easily shake each item and put on a clothes rack and also hang up tops and pants on a different kind of rack!! All of my racks gold up, do u can get them out of the way!! That way I don’t spend money using my apt. laundry room dryer!! Just use washer!! After the initial cost of racks, u save money!!! I do think if I was them, though, I would go without going on holiday for a year or two so a dryer could be bought, also!! With racks and dryers, u wouldn’t need to iron. I would NEVER iron!!!
for all the comments that state they don't spend enough time. There are kids being raised in foster care that gets no parents love & turns out fine. I am one of them. I'd rather have been raised in a family like this rather than home to home. They got both parents & LOTS of love from them with brothers & sisters. Also, pay attention both parents actually can tell you about the traits of each child which means they know them well and must spend a lot of time with each.

I think that the best thing about having SO many kids, is that having so many kids is that they will be a great bulwark against school bullies! They would be a great deterrent, knowing how many kids would come running to defend a wronged sibling!

Unbelievable how wasteful she is with the grocery shopping. The children eat so much junk. Cheaper to make a spaghetti bolognese. Some salad. Oatmeal with fresh fruit in the morning. Or beans and toast. Cereals expensive. I don't like their diet at all

If you can't devote the time and energy into raising each of your children according to their individual needs and not depending on their siblings to pick up the slack then IT'S TIME TO STOP HAVING KIDS. I had to raise my sisters and that was not my job ... let children have a childhood without adult responsibilities!

Imagine 15 kids with nits,chicken pox,impetigo, coughs,colds,diarrhoea OMG..
And nits (lice) are so common in schools (even private schools) like ours in Australia, patterned after the British system, (or so I was told) it's really lax! It was just awful to see an adult louse marching across my little girls head! I had no experience at all with what to do with them! Finally tho, it too was something we outgrew. And I'm sure that if my daughter has a family here, she will know what is correct to do.

Its all very well having large families if its for the right reasons...I.e.you want to PARENT that many kids, not because you want that many BABIES.

Agree and I think that's the issues this woman has. The discrepancy between the cute, clean and tidy nursery room for the youngest child and the other children's overcrowded and dirty rooms seems like an indicator. The older children don't seem happy. They simply have an "It is what it is" attitude which is so sad to see.

Does anyone know when this was filmed? It looks super old. The other episode with the radfords was filmed in 2011. 16:45 yes it is old! Look at the computer! 😂 and now the radfords are the biggest family so I guess it was filmed before the radfords had their 15th?

In England was it legal to have the car with too many people to seats? There were a lot of kids in that car scene of them going to school.
It is absolutely against the law to have those children in the car without using car seats. It is utterly ridiculous and neglectful. ALL children under 4'9" and 36kgs need to use a correct car seat for EVERY journey
ThePauleeny I came here looking for comments about the car. How many were in there? Like 10? Does she realize that she would lose most of her kids if she got in an accident without any of them restrained in a proper safety seat or seatbelt? Love how she made sure the baby had her seat in correctly but all of the other kids flying through the car in an accident would most likely injure or kill the baby anyway.

Why dont you get your items in bulk and have a stock pile and build it up plan meals ahead.
It depends a lot of countries aren't like the US where they have a Bjs, Costco or what ever. so buying in bulk doesn't happen. From the sounds of it he meals are planned.
1. she does. These are already bag packs in Europe. Our large coke at McDonald etc is 0,5L. That's the biggest. And no free refills.
Also she wouldn't have space to store like 100 bottles of shampoo, 200 boxes of cereal etc.

I wish people would stop being so ignorant. There was potentially two out of three items on those food plates that vegetarians or vegans could eat plus the extra vegetables she spoke of. And it's not 'fussy' eating, in most cases it's ethical eating.
'fussy eating' and 'ethical eating' is the same thing. "I don't want it because I don't want it. For no logical reason." Toddlers, Millennials, all the same. And in most cases they'll grow it out over time.

Not overly, but they need to be helping a fair amount. Even the boys!! I was glad to see the boys helping at grocery store, however!!
They get the names mixed up? Well... Years ago my dad always got us mixed up and I remember I thought "We're only four!", now I have two and get them mixed up sometimes... Nothing bad about it, I guess...

The adult children, especially the two older girls who are 21 and 23, should be striking out on their own, leaving more badly needed space for their younger siblings.
This is what I want to be like when I grow up. I am planning on ten kids. I wouldn't iron though because it's a waste of life. I've always loved big families and babies so it's fitting

Yes!!! I don’t know how on earth she would get it all dry!!! It shows her hanging clothes up outside, BUT I know in England, it will rain on average 4 days out of a week!! My niece lived there So I know about the weather!! HOW does she get them dry on the abundance of rainy days??!!!

I had 3 siblings and 6 step siblings plus the stepfathers x mother I law, so we had 13 altogether. I was so miserable and hated it. There was no privacy and I didn't like the step family much. I just wanted some peace and quiet. I'm 70 now, and still prefer my own company
Can you coupon in Britain? And is there price matching? I see alot of tosh in the cart and I think for a diet of nuggets and chips and such you should swap that out for more variety. I mean no in not saying go vegan but tofu is inexpensive and also growing your own would cut the cost by alot

I understand wanting to have lots of children but I feel like it’s just not fair for the children themselves. They will never get the individual attention they need from their parents. They are also forced at a young age to become surrogate parents themselves. Taking care of their younger siblings. Idk, I feel like the parents need to have more and more children is selfish. Just my opinion.

The oldest and the next four take over mommy's role. I am from Nigeria and l have seen 40-120 member households.
they didn't show in the documentary but in real life, the mother doesn't do it all, most of the cleaning and child care falls on the shoulders of the oldest children.
The one reoccurring line throughout all these very large families.... is that the mom grew up lonely, or the kids are filling an “inner void”, etc.... it doesn’t matter if they are good or bad parents... having that many kids for those reasons is not ok... perhaps a good therapist would have been able to help. Honestly, the people giving her crap for having this many kids because they have to wait a little longer for things like sneakers need to shut up. My mum had 4, which is fairly typical and she couldn't afford to do anywhere near as much as this family. We never went on family trips like that or really got many new things because we couldn't afford it. (Even though both my parents worked full-time). Like yeah she should be feeding them better food than chips and nuggets but she's not starving them either. Just because it's not the norm today doesn't make it wrong. She does love them all and the kids even said that they didn't feel like they missed out on attention. Whereas several of my siblings and I felt tremendously neglected. Just hearing that mum saying how she'll think up activities for her kids when it's a rainy day made me so jealous, my mum didn't even do that for 4 of us, she would just tell us to do housework if we're bored. So don't judge her just on number because you can still be a good mum even if you have to share that love. She's doing right by them all and the kids seem happy to have what they have.

No there could be many reasons she was lonely. Some people can stand in a room with 20 people and still feel lonely.

Also you have teenagers, my mom taught me to wash the dishes when I was 8, and to wash my clothes, teach your older ones to wash their clothes and iron. Help your self, I don't really understand why this generations of mothers , including my own sister and don't get me wrong I love my sister and adore my nephews, but moms now a days are letting their kids to be useless and lazy people. My own nephews 12 and 11 they don't wash their dishes, they still call their mom to pour them water, they are way to old for that.

The parents have their own separate bathroom and all the children share one other bathroom amongst themselves… Strikes me as a logistical nightmare.
Have the children help make their lunches, then with the extra money buy healthier food for all.

Is she seriously driving with 8 kids in the car yeah cause no one would die in that car accident would they. Oh I love my kids more than anything but I put their lives at risk arleast 10 times a week on the bare minimum getting them to and from school. Honestly where are the police officers in the UK in Australia you would be lucky to get away driving like that for a week before being busted. I'm just super disgusted.
