    Thanks for the help through your videos and products I've recently ordered. I've been fly fishing and tying off and on since I was 13 (now 65) when my great uncle took me up to Hat Creek and the Fall River in Northern California where he had fished most of his life. After his and my aunt's passing years ago, I inherited their bamboo rods both hand-made by Winston in San Francisco. To say the least, they are a treasure. Thanks to you guys and persistent local shelter-in-place orders, I'm enjoying a rebirth of tying and will be hitting some favorite locations again when possible. There's a lot of junk on CZcams in regards to fly fishing and tying. Didn't take more than three videos for me to subscribe to your channel as your presentations are professional, intelligently and thoroughly presented, and I take away something new with each topic. Keep up the good work. I'm sure I'll be ordering more stuff. And thanks for bringing me back to life!

As you know, but some of your less experienced fly fisher viewers may not, there are additional approaches often used for top water fishing for species such as bass, and various approaches used for salt water fishing, such as bone fishing on the flats. I really enjoy your channel and I never cease to learn something useful from your videos.

      Ecksdog, thank you for asking that question as I was also confused as he did say he uses a "sinking line" 99% of the time with streamers and other times he used the term "sink tip". So I also thought he meant a full sinking line was mostly used. A very good guide I fish with in New York does use sinking lines (often 200 grain) all of the time with streamers in fast and high water.

  • @tobyrey2700
    @tobyrey2700 Před 5 lety +1

    When building a streamer rig could I tie a tippet ring to the butt section and extend the rest of the rig from there? What I am thinking of doing is cutting the loop off my sinking line and tying a permanent butt section with a tippet ring on it. I am thinking of a nail knot to connect the end of the fly line to the butt section. I have a section of river nearby that the huge browns congregate under the spillway of a lake dam and I want to throw streamers at them :-)

    Newbie question here. What size split shot are you using? And/or are you selecting a size based on the flow of the water. Go heavier if you are fishing for trout in flowing water. Lighter if you are fishing for bluegill on a pond or lake.

    I have successfully targeted Carp, Pike, Walleye, Perch, Largemouth, and my most favorite of all species, the Smallmouth Bass with the flyrod. I have used floating, sinkng, and intermittent lines. I actually have even used use small crank bait lures used in a " chuck and duck" technique to much success! I learned my craft by attending fishing expos and watching Dave Dalhburg, Lefty Cray, Joe Umphrey, Harry Murphy, Bob Clouser and Leo Pachner tie, cast and present their personal ideas about the art. I then applied their technique and concepts to my river. I fish the Kankakee River in Illinois. It was a world class Smallmouth Bass fishery, now sand from Indiana has wrecked parts of the river. But 50% is still good. I lost my fishing partner 7 years ago to Parkinson's. He and I waded virtually all the wadeable water for many years. It got to where I had to tie the anchor line on his 10 ft Jon boat to my waist and pull him around with me so we could fish togather. He always hated that had to pull him around the river in his boat, but I said "wouldn't you do it for me"? His rely was, "hell yes I would". I said " then get to fishing,"! I lost him just before the next year's season started about 5 months later. I have only in this last 2 months ventured out and fished a few hours since his passing. So much has changed in the last 7 years! I'm scrambling to get back up to speed again. I need to whole heartedly thank you for sharing the information, time, passion and wisdom to help me get back in the water (hardcore year round wader here) I wish I could have had access to your videos years ago! I learned old school, trial and error method. Again thank you for your time, well done video and easy natured way of teaching! I sincerely appreciate it!

    I'm new to fly fishing and just purchased around a $200 combo TFO rod and real. I have floating line on. But I would like to know is there a quick way to swap your line out with sinking line for streamer fishing? I never did streamer fishing but sounds like it might be better by your knowledge.

    Hello Brian Flechsig! I have two Martin Automatic Fly Fishing Reels inherited from my Father who use to fly fish Topwater flies in Alabama for bream, bass, and crappie. He'd attach a popper and add one or two tiny flies behind the popper. Sometimes he'd catch two fish at the same time! Would you consider posting a CZcams Tutorial on how you would Fly Fish Cast using an Automatic Fly Fishing Reel is different I guess, and demonstrate proper casting using such? I live in Georgia, and hope to fish the waters in North Georgia so I'd like to hear your thoughts and how you'd make good use of these reels if you inherited them --- the reels are in excellent condition. Thanks for producing such Educational CZcams videos on Fly Fishing!

    I have question lets say you use nymph fly fishing for like 1-3 hours and then you see the fish begin to eat from surface.
    1. Do i need to cut the line and change it to float line for dry fishing or can stay the same line but just change it from nymph to Dry hook(bait)?
