As a Solid CAD program user this is the part that`s essential ! I have only been using Sketchup a few days as I tried it before and found it very difficult and faffy to edit or organise. Thanks.
To say that learning how to use Outliner was a game changer is a gross understatement. I finally know which group I'm editing, especially nested groups! Thanks, this is saving me so much time!
Thank you. Very helpful. I am having to put all objects as components as I am using the OPENCUTLIST extension and it will not work with groups. So far the Group examples in this video seem to work well with the components.... LOVE the drag to top to get rid of the subgroups.... Thanks again
You have mentioned the Outliner in other videos but what you did here made me excited to start using my Outliner on a more proactive level. Thank's Justin for all your help with this amazing Sketchup software.
Super helpful!! I always used the cut and paste in place to add objects into groups, which was very time consuming and easy to make mistakes, with the help of outliner it becomes so much easier!! thank you!
I already knew about Outliner before this video, but guess who made me aware of its existence? Before I found your channel, I thought that Layers were our only option to organize a model - and it sucks for this particular purpose. Thank you, man!
Thank you so much for this video. I stumbled across the outliner a few days ago and had an Idea what it was about, but your video has helped a lot to make more sense of it. My model is a mess of groups all called group in the outliner. AAAAAGGGGHHHH!!!!
Hey Justin, Great explanation of Outliner. I think in terms of BIM and how under utilized SKU is in this area, perhaps mentioning this would be a really good tutorial. I actually haven't used Outliner too much since I don't do much BIM with SKU, but that is changing very quickly. Thanks for the tutorials.
Brilliant! - I am just a beginner, but this has been very helpful in terms of organisation. I had just signed up for another course which I am finding extremely difficult, and keep coming back to your tutorials to help me figure things out. Just wish I had signed up to your course...
Great video very useful, speech delivery and cursor click rate a little high for my English ears & new eyes but I got there. Very helpful, I had been using Layers but will now make use of this. The point about objects on switched off layers not appearing at all in Outliner was probably the most significant one for me; well explained and enjoyable; thanks Justin 👍🏻
this was VERY HELPFUL THANK YOU FOR THIS. i just finished making exterior of a building and gonna do the interior but things are hella messy lol gonna remember this for future projects
Thanks Justin thanks again I think you may have just solved a problem for me, well several problems. I couldn't understand why 'Unhid all' didn't always unhide things. All the best . . . Andy
My understanding is that objects, components and groups can be assigned to a layer so that their collective visibility can be toggled on or off at the same time.
Thanks for the video, Justin. It was really good to see the outliner in action. I'm a woodworker/furniture designer and I've been messing around with the outliner quite a bit in an effort to save time and stay organized. I was wondering if you may be able to cover the difference between components and groups a little bit more in-depth for drawing sake but ALSO organization sake. In fact, almost more for the organization sake. For example, let's say I have identical components (or subcomponents that make up a larger "over-arching" component) that I would like for changes to occur to each when I make a change to one, and they occur in a symmetrical fashion. Meaning they oppose each other in opposite components of the project such as a corner on a front and back panel, or right and left panel. That way I could pull the entire panel away from the project and keep all the components together in order to expose other parts of the project. Any thoughts or ideas? Anyone else have any input or a source I could go to for some insight? Thanks
Thanks Justin. I've used outliner extensively since you started promoting it way back, and it really is a powerful tool. It has several downsides. For complex models it slows down SketchUp so much I have to turn it off. Secondly, Trimble prefixed "instances" in the group or component name in "outline". IMHO, "instances" should follow the name or at least be optional in the "outliner" window
Urban Woodworking Jesus, I've been wondering why my computer slows down whenever I tried to move an object. I closed outliner and it worka fine now. It's a shame, because I use outliner and Layers a lot.
This is a good point, though it's worth noting that this seems to happen less when your objects in the outliner are grouped and collapsed. Unfortunately I forget to mention in this video, but it's VERY important if you're using an extension or creating a lot of new groups/components to minimize the outliner first. Thanks for this comment!
Your videos are wonderful. But one guidance I want. I am unable to change the colour of a sofa or say Chair. How to do that ? Should we use outliner to change the colour. Can you please make out a video on that because you are an expert really. Good work. Keep it up.
Excellent work and video! However I am a little confused between using layers which I have been using for a while. I understand that OUTLINER seems to be more structured in terms of arborescence and the hide principle, but what is the basic advantage of OUTLINER vs LAYERS which you turn on or off. Am I to understand that you do not use layers in your work. Thank you so much for all of your videos.
do you have a video where you explain best practices for using Tags? I've been using sketchup for a while and I still feel like I could be more efficient in how I use layers / tags.
WhuUUus'up Justin! I'm a 20+ year user of Maya so the Outliner is always a welcome feature. It's similar in many ways but I've a small ish.. Q1 :: @12:40 In your reorg example, you drag-selected a group and moved it to another group, you got a placement indicator as to where it will drop... I'm not getting that with my machine. Is there a pref for this? Using Win10 btw. Q2 :: Is it possible to drag a group out of a group and onto the root layer -as its own group? My attempts simply drops the group into another random group located in the root, but it won't stick to the root layer like I see in other apps (i.e. Maya Outliner, Photoshop layers, Windows File Explorer, etc..). Awesome channel!
is there a way that I can add the cylinder to two groups? once I click on the shapes outliner I have the cylinder included, and once I click on another group outliner (curvy items for example) I also get it selected
Thanks for the great tutorial! Watching I was wondering why there is no easy way to edit an object that is part of a group. Like you said, you either have to double-click your way through your groups and the referring sub-groups or access them via the outliner. But why there is no way to e.g. cmd-click on the particular object and edit it right away?
Probably off topic here. But I'm new to sketchup. I downloaded slicer, but it won't work Keeps saying no digital signature. Looking to make parametric wall art.
Justin, how do you make money using SketchUp or I should say a side business. It would be interesting to know how others do it. Great videos that thanks
Hi, I've got Sketchup Pro 2018 on OS X, the Outliner and Layer options don't appear in 'Window' tab the same as they do in the video. I can activate Outliner as a pop-up box, similarly 'Layers' as a separate box. Is there a trick for consolidating all the useful sub-menus into one right hand dialogue box like in the video?
It would be helpful to see the outliner applied in a real-life situation (within a real model) rather than just random shapes which aren't likely to ever show up in any model I make. I can't really get a sense of its power as a tool since copying and grouping and ungrouping cylinders isn't big on my to-do list.
Wouldn t it be quicker when making a group or component to directly right click on it and rename it instead looking for it in outliner and rigtclickin rename
Help! For some reason my (new) 2019 skp turns off ALL of the surrounding model when I edit a group - VERY MUCH A Nightmare - Need to see the group (even if it's shaded) so I can see how the two entities interact - IS THERE A PRE-SETTING I can turn off? HELP!
Dang, where was this video two weeks ago when i lost half my geometry because i hid it and couldnt find it! Haha. Thanks. Oh, and what moc do you use for your recordings? Thanks
I knew the Outliner was either a treasure chest or a pandora's box, only looking at it a few times in five years. I'm a slow learner, maximum three things at a time. Sketchup, the program continues it's legacy of appearing simple, but being capable of almost anything. Since Gates, there has been a communications disconnect between the programmers and the users wherein the programmers 'interpret' the business and needs of the user as best they can, but are never able to think like a carpenter, or develop an algorithm that follows a contractors' logistical sequence, because buildings aren't cube farms. The best attempts are simply new interfaces (GUI's) for linking data to objects in an attempt to be 'intuitive'. AutoCad and Chief Architect and most others are all worthy of awards, but none have the intuitive interface and interaction of Sketchup. Same to Justin and Bonnie (common sense sounding board) for showing us how to extract the best stuff.
Lol - glad you found it helpful! The outliner really makes keeping your model organized and accessing different parts of your model a lot easier. Thanks!
It should. There are other ways as well - czcams.com/video/8yJF00ClE_4/video.html - Also - make sure to minimize the outliner when not using it - that will also increase performance

(You wouldn't say I walking......) If the sentence was " Bonnie and I look good" then the I is correct as you wouldn't say "me look good".
I bet you dont know how to select all component in outliners and switch them to group. sketchup is sucks and waste of time especially with that component features make very big bullshit file size
It is an archects program. But maybe that will change. I think there is a need for a second program that will incorporate rendering, animation, sound etc which I would call ComloseUp. That would also suit game developers
Kind of an odd comment...This channel is about creating 3D models in SketchUp of many kinds. If you're looking for a game creation channel, you may need to look elsewhere, though I have been covering Unreal Engine on my other channel...

Well explained. I am using the outliner but am new to sketchup so find your videos invaluable....
That was very helpful and solved multiple problems for me thanks Justin 🙏♥️
Glad it helped!
Can't believe I have overlooked this for sooooooo long!! You are the best!
Your explanations are so clear, succinct, no waffle and no sleight of hand mystery. A magician without tricks. Thanks.
I like that you mix the advanced stuff with the basics sometimes. There's something for everyone.
Well, I try to provide as much value as I can ;) - thanks Jim!
As a Solid CAD program user this is the part that`s essential ! I have only been using Sketchup a few days as I tried it before and found it very difficult and faffy to edit or organise.
Thanks.
Glad it helped!
Using Outliner since I watched your video indeed it saved me a lot of time! Once again thank you for your help!
Awesome!
Justin you are the clearest explainer I have encountered on CZcams
thank you justin. love the tutorials you share.Godspeed
Excellent time saver and organizer tip. Love It!
Glad it was helpful!
I haven't made a complex SketchUp model for about a year. This is exactly what I needed to know before diving in again. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
To say that learning how to use Outliner was a game changer is a gross understatement. I finally know which group I'm editing, especially nested groups! Thanks, this is saving me so much time!
Seriously - when I first learned about it - mind totally blown :)
Super helpful- never knew about Outliner! Thanks
Happy to help!

Model organization is so important for any CAD program. This is very helpful!
True statement - otherwise models get unmanageable really fast
JTender As usual, you do a great job. Your videos are very helpful and thanks so much for doing them.
You have mentioned the Outliner in other videos but what you did here made me excited to start using my Outliner on a more proactive level. Thank's Justin for all your help with this amazing Sketchup software.
I love the Outliner - so effective for keeping models organized!
Thank you! You're an angel 😇
Justin, Thank you for this great video. Can you make a outliner tutorial about a building like showing how to organize floor plans in outliner?
This series talks about it - czcams.com/video/n4gERM9SIxY/video.html
Super helpful!! I always used the cut and paste in place to add objects into groups, which was very time consuming and easy to make mistakes, with the help of outliner it becomes so much easier!! thank you!
WAY Easier with outliner!
Thanks Justin. I have used Sketchup for almost a decade and never knew about this tool. I will be from now on! :)
Great video! Didn't realize how powerful outliner is until you made this. Thanks a lot! Keep it up
Glad you liked it!
UMMM I'm a Sketchup user since 2009 and I've never used the Outliner...Starting tomorrow that'll end!! thanks!
As a new user, this tutorial has just made things a whole lot easier! Thanks for showing! :)
Awesome - glad you liked it!
I already knew about Outliner before this video, but guess who made me aware of its existence? Before I found your channel, I thought that Layers were our only option to organize a model - and it sucks for this particular purpose. Thank you, man!
Thanks! Outliner use in your model is a real game changer!
This was a very good video and covered a lot of questions that I had thank you

This is going to change my life. ❤

Very helpful. You mentioned layers. I'm trying to figure them out. Could you explain them a bit more? Thanks.
My understanding is that objects, components and groups can be assigned to a layer so that their collective visibility can be toggled on or off at the same time.
The combination of the outliner And the layers is a winner! Great video Justin!
Thanks Willem!
at last I understand what outliner is for!! horahh!!!
Thanks for the video, Justin. It was really good to see the outliner in action. It's a good one! :)
Thank you Justin.! That's really saving a hell amount of a time.
Awesome - glad it helped!
Very helpful
Thumbs up for "Me and Bonnie 1" alone, the tutorial is a bonus :)
LOL - Awesome!
Why did not I use outliner before?? It's amazing simple!thank you very much,Justin)
It definitely makes a difference - huge time saver! Thanks very much for watching!

Just make sure you minimize it until you need it and you should be fine. Thanks Arek!
Love it dude! This is a chronic organizer's dream!
I KNOW! That's why I like it :)
It is very The Most Underused Tip as you said! Thank you very much!
Super understanding thanks man, very meaningful because I'm a student
Thank you for this video! It is easy to understand
Thanks Justin, that was really helpful
Glad you liked it :)
Nice reminder. Great content and quick explanation. Well done!
Thanks very much - glad you liked it!
I love outliner, thanks!
👍
Man the like button is not enough. CZcams needs a love button for this video
Thanks very much! :)
Good refresher !
Thanks.
Useful like a hell ! Thank man!
Thanks Justin.
Thanks for watching!

You don't use the outliner to change colors - you apply materials with the paint bucket tool...czcams.com/video/Tw6VToqjbCI/video.html
Great!

John Grunewald well, you should take a look at Justin's Interior Design videos, he ueses Outliner a lot in there
thanks, I'll do just that.
Wouldn t it be quicker when making a group or component to directly right click on it and rename it instead looking for it in outliner and rigtclickin rename
If you want to - I find organizing with the outliner faster for my workflow, but you can do it however you'd like...

ANY ONE CAN HELP ME I USE SKP 2021 AND EDITING SO MUCH OBJECT THAN MY OBJECT SUDDENLY LOST WHEN I SAVE THE FILE.
Dang, where was this video two weeks ago when i lost half my geometry because i hid it and couldnt find it! Haha. Thanks. Oh, and what moc do you use for your recordings? Thanks
You mean what Mic? More info here - kit.com/TheSketchUpEssentials/sketchup-modeling-and-youtube-creation-kit
TheSketchUpEssentials yeah mic, my bad. I was on my cell phone and it has a small typing interface:) thanks. I use outliner everyday now.
there's a command in Sketchup to show/hide hidden geo
great فيديو رائع

Gates? Bill Gates had nothing to do with SketchUp.
sir i have a question,
it will reduce the lag if i hide some objects?
It should. There are other ways as well - czcams.com/video/8yJF00ClE_4/video.html - Also - make sure to minimize the outliner when not using it - that will also increase performance
TheeeeeeeSketchup Essential.com SQUAD 🤣
LOL 😂
outliner is much more convenient than layers ?
the best is to use both :)
Correct :)
JTender
I DONT HAVE AN OUTLINER IN MY MENU OMGG
Bonnie and me, is more correct.
Same - "Bonnie and I" is considered the polite usage here
Difference between UK and the States? Here in Africa we try to use the Queen's English. If we can remember it from 1820.
Actually Deon both are correct (it has nothing to do with being polite - and I'm also from Africa!). It depends on the context and what follows. The way to test this is to take the Bonnie out of the sentence and see what you'd say for the "me" part. If the sentence was "Bonnie and me walking," then me is correct. (You wouldn't say I walking......) If the sentence was " Bonnie and I look good" then the I is correct as you wouldn't say "me look good".
More like a side business. Types of people to contact businesses that would use the services of SketchUp
I bet you dont know how to select all component in outliners and switch them to group. sketchup is sucks and waste of time especially with that component features make very big bullshit file size
I feel like your tutorials are biased towards architecture and real estate industries because you never talk about stuff relevant to game making.
It is an archects program. But maybe that will change. I think there is a need for a second program that will incorporate rendering, animation, sound etc which I would call ComloseUp. That would also suit game developers
Wtf ? 😂😂
Kind of an odd comment...This channel is about creating 3D models in SketchUp of many kinds. If you're looking for a game creation channel, you may need to look elsewhere, though I have been covering Unreal Engine on my other channel...
There is a large overlap. SketchUp is attractive to gamers because of its simplicity compared to engineering CAD programs. After all, perfect spheres/ circles/ cylinders (polar coordinates) that might be important in drawing say car crankshafts etc, are not necessary in such detail to gamers. I'm ehoping for a sequel to SketchUp, that creates fully rendered and automated compositions using just proxies that would be very attractive for architectural pitches, and the byproduct attractive to interior decorators and gamers.
