A Defence of Sonia (Berserk)

- More often than not it there is a narrative among fans of fiction that an annoying or an unlikable character means a bad/ poorly written one.
In this video I wanted to explore a defence on Sonia and why that she is not poorly written. It is more than okay to dislike a character but I wanted to explore why she works within the context of the story.
OST used: The Wolf Among Us- Business Office

I only hate Sonia because she a Griffith cheerleader. I never found her annoying. And I never hated Nina. I think people who hate her fail to realize that she represents the average refugee of Albion. It was meant to show how fear and instict of survival affect our morality.
cesverc Cheerleader! That would definitely be her modern-day equivalent! A dizzy blonde, who just happens to ace every pop quiz BEFOREHAND.
I hated Nina, but that's because we were meant to hate her. I don't think she was "bad" or poorly written character. If anytyhing, quite the opposite, she's very effective as a draw for our hatred, but she acts in a very human, understandable way.
She’s just another lost soul infatuated with Griffith’s inhuman charisma and otherworldly aura. The only reason she’s close to Griffith now is because she’s useful. She’ll be exploited for his gain and disposed of just like every ally he’s ever had, and then she’ll know the truth.
Ch35h1r3C47 Nina, A woman who only cares about herself, and discards others when it's convenient?
She's not unlike most divorcees I see.😛
Precisely. She's ruled by fear as her primary impulse.
I had no idea people hated Sonia.
Same.
Same here, I always found her endearing.
Same here... 🤔
Same.
Same here
People hate Sonia? She's such an interesting piece in the puzzle though, she's the bridge between each side of the story.
Tmo Just waiting for the *clang* to hit her.
Just because a character is important to the series doesn't mean you can't hate them.
@@evanlee6644 I seen people imply that she is a needless character and shamed Miura for including such an annoying character. Honestly I never really hated her, and after I seen the edgy comments about the various ways they want to see her die I hate her even less now. I really don't think she done anything to deserve death.
@@janogabor7697 She has to die for guts to reach Griffith. Remember she can see future and can see any attack coming to him
@@saulhernnadez9203 I think Griffith can already do that without her. Remember that he directly implanted very detailed dreams into people of the future and that wasn't Sonia doing that.
If anything Sonias future telling is most likely comes from the godhand and idea of evil directly. Thus she is basically a puppet.
I used to really dislike her and find her annoying. However nowadays I tend to feel nothing more than sad/pity for her. After being alone for so long its not hard to understand why she would desperately cling to possibly the first sense of belonging she has ever felt in her life. This is amplified by the fact that her naivety blinds her to the unfortunate fact that sooner or later, Griffith is going to bring ruin to anyone he must toss away to reach those higher planes. Her meeting Gutts is one of my most eagerly anticipated meetings of the story, as I will love to see their interaction with one another.
Seeing her meet Guts might even break all that she's trusted in. A medium who can see and understand destinies, meets a man who defies it
Farnese and Sonia reminds me of my sister
@@zel7396If Guts and Sonia meet each other in the future, they'll surely have a Batman and Harley Quinn type of relationship!
Before Sonia, there was Casca. Griffith always seems to need a young woman nearby who gazes at him worshipfully. She's useful for her power. Casca was useful for her fighting and leadership. But Griffith's ego always seems to need people close to him who worships him and don't know the "real" him. Once they lose that look he'd rather them be dead.
Sonia will surely despises Griffith after she sees Casca's memories of the Eclipse!
Don't forget Charlotte, who was useful because she was a princess, and once she stopped worshipping Griffith, he let her run away from Falconia.
Casva too Had Judeau while Sonia has Irvine
@@stonedtothebone6655 that never happens what?
I always like Sonia, I want to see her reaction when she discovers the true nature of Griffith or when she sees how he really is
You assume that’ll happen
Imagine Sonia gets a behelit, what would she sacrifice?
Sonia doesn't give a fuck. She doesn't even judge flesh eating monsters lmao she doesn't care if Griffith sacrificed some bros some years ago.
@@sebaba001 i think that if someone hears that their savior killed and tore his comrades into pieces and raped a woman who cared for him versus seeing griffith do all those things result in different reactions. i think if sonia sees the visions of the horror and griffith raping casca, she might change her mind. if she only hears about it then she might not care
Sonia KNOWS about it. She doesn't give a fuck
... didn't realize Sonia was hated honestly. I liked her from her first introduction and found her interaction with Shierke extremely interesting. I even feel like she's the new "Caska" of the new band of the hawk
I honestly didnt know what to think of her, I think shes cheery which is something good for berserk, and being able to see the future is very useful, honestly I prefer sonia over quite a few female characters in this series
I'm quite positive Locks is the new Casca
Because her personality is that she is nice to everyone to the point of being naive. Casca at least had a personality outside of being loyal to a fault for Griffith, Sonia doesn't. And maybe that will change but right now she is just beyond predictable.
Ace Phoenix it’s because she’s essentially Golden Age Caska that people hate her. She’s naive, entitled and cares for nothing more then to make her senpai happy. Caska used to be the same way, but it was through her interactions with gutts and her journey of self discovery (taking some time away from Griffiths side) that truly made her blossom as a character capable of making her own choices. She still sought out Griffith and risked the lives of the entire band of the hawk to rescue him, but when he tried to force romantic interest upon her she clearly rejected him. Realizing she no longe needed to live for his sake but rather her own.
Dude said she’s the new casca🤦🏽♂️
Sonia is the president of the "Griffith did nothing wrong" club
Maybe because of that they hate her. They reflect in her ... xd
We've seen this level of puppy love before (Casca) and it didn't end well (The rape of the Eclipse.).
I hope that nothing on that MAGNITUDE happens to her, but then again this is Miura.
You wonder why Sonia doesn't read Griffith's (Or should I say Femto's) mind and intentions! 😒
Edward Gaines he is practically a god, so she may just not be able to. Oh, and because of obvious plot reasons
Zach Young Reminds me of when Toguro couldn't read Kurama's mind. The layers were too "complex." 😋
Ricardo Santos Well in fiction, it's okay to have love goggles on.
But in real life, loving a hardened criminal is POISONOUS. I hope Miura can bring that kind of growth and maturity to Sonia's character, like he did Casca.
She's so devoted to Griffith, she could never bring herself to do that. That'd be not only incredibly blasphemous in her mind, but a massive betrayal of trust as she's (sort of) one of his peers in addition to a cleric of the Hawk of Light.
My fan-theory: Sonia will eventually encounter Casca, talk to her and read her mind, and her world will come crashing down.
A defence of Donovan, please.
Right here: He's a big dude, so everyone is afraid of him, so in order to 'let things out,' he needed to spend a little coin.
I know, my deep character analysis is moving, but let's not dwell on my findings too long, because then my confidence might lower...
Aadu Oh god no. How the hell did you get upvotes?
Pip bernadotte Donovan is kind of a meme within the Berserk community. The series is pretty bleak and messed up, so not joking about it every now and then will drive you insane.
He paid good money for Guts he gave Guts love that he wanted his father to provide him
Everyone loves Donovan.
When it comes to idolising Griffith I think princess Charlotte is guilty of that even more so than Sonia.u problem with her is that she to some degree understands the nature of the demons, she even joked about given one a body for him to eat or play with whatever the case maybe, that fact that these demons still adhere to their inherent evil nature while serving the hawk shows that Griffith does not really care for the people who are unfortunate enough to wander into the demon camp and Sonia knows this of course she would she's a psychic medium but even through all this she still remains loyal to Griffith because to her he's her saviour and that's enough for her to overlook his unsaintlike behaviour.
What you said made Sonia even worse
@@Pollouomo is she tho? In her mind it would be like sacrificing a couple of people for the sake of thousands...
How is that worse than neverending death at the hands of other humans?
Obviously, her shortsightedness makes her seem horrible.... but is she truly? She is just naive.
I can buy it because to her. She was about to be turned into into a Sex Slave like many and Griffith came in along.
After seeing hopelessness, only for their saviour to come in. I can see her denying and even believing Griffith. Even believing that since he control those demons that its all right.
fuck Charlotte, hate her the most out of all the berk
I don't mind her. It just makes me sad to watch a character acting with the best of intentions having her actions perverted by someone she trusts.
I also didn't mind Nina, but I was happy she went off and did her own thing instead of tagging along with the others.
I shall bring you a woman corpse for this.
I think what makes Sonia kind of irritating, is that she seems like a genuinely nice and insightful individual. Maybe a tiny bit of a troll, but nevertheless someone with a good heart and a good head on her shoulders. She's actually quite a powerful medium, and doesn't seem like someone who would just get duped. Yet she either fails or ignores to poke through Griffith's visage. You can't tell me that with her abilities she's not aware that there's more to Griffith than meets the eye. She should know better, but for some reason she doesn't, or chooses not to. And it's infuriating.
Exactly, that why I dont like her.
Exactly this.
I don’t like her because she’s just a prick.
I agree with this wholesale, how can you just be chill with your surroundings if you have psychic powers and NOT ask where this all came from?
@@zel7396 Griffith radiates savior energy and can influence the minds of those around him and even implant dreams into the minds of everyone. If you were looking for a savior figure already, Griffith can turn that into obsession. It's clear she is in Griffith palm, just like how quickly Mule fallen into his hand which was so sudden even Mule was surprised how quickly he submitted.
Sonia was looking for someone to make her feel wanted. Griffith abused that. I'm sure if the story continued Sonia would have been confronted by Schierke about this. It's a clear set up, with sadly no pay off on the horizon now.
I didn’t even know there was hate for Sonia. If anything I love that shes creepy and I’m intrigued on her abilities and where she’s going in the story
Princess Charlotte and Nina are far more unlikable characters
666melodeath666 agree, while Sonia has driven me a bit mad when defending the apostles, I like the scenes she’s in because she’s at the very least, interesting. Somehow the likes of Charlotte does annoy me more. She shares the same blindness of Sonia that makes her unlikeable, but she’s also beyond useless other than her last name, and irritatingly innocent and naive.
How is Charlotte unlikeable?
Fearch 93 Princess Charlotte has no agency of her own. Not much character other than naive princess who needs constant saving. She’s kinda fullfilled her purpose in the storyline now too especially since Griffith now has Falconia. Basically a plot device with little personality
666melodeath666 She risked quite alot for Griffith and the band, back when Griffith was torturet. She's also perceptive to how he's changed and is skeptical about it, unlike the rest. I think she's smarter than people give her credit for.
Fearch 93 True she did help Griffith’s rescue but everything bout her character just revolves around “I love Griffith” and shes simply not that interesting. Thats why she gets hate I think no one can truly justify Nina though.
I think what killed any hope of me ever liking her was the chapter where she gave that corny ass speech to the people of Wyndham after they saw Griffiths Apostles transforming
This is a point I haven't seen in the comments before so here I am making it.
For and to Sonia humans have been nothing but monsters all her life. So why should she have a problem with monsters?
Remember: HUMANS are the reason Femto could exist in the first place. Not to mention the apostles. Humans are the reason why monsters exist and because of her mind-reading abilities she's always been able to "*see*" the most monstrous side of humans. The side they never show because it cannot stand the light of day.
and not to mention the kushans
Yep while terrifying creatures did existed in the astral world human nature literally made them powerful to the point of creating worse things. Trolls are a great example. What shoul have been a mere vermin became genuine threat to people.
What if Sonia does know about the eclipse? If she has "telepathy", then isn't it possible she may have glimpsed what happened during the eclipse through Griffith's mind, and it simply hasn't been revealed to the reader? If so, then this would show Sonia's love to be unconditional since Griffith/Femto would be her saviour. That it doesn't matter what he could do, she will always love him. This would also reinforce Sonia's jealousy of Charlotte because Sonia would feel she understands Griffith/Femto better than Charlotte and therefore loves him more than her. Charlotte only sees the fairytale aspect of Griffith, but Sonia understands the man.
This idea is great, and also realy possible, because Miura showed that Griffith and Sonia usually speak thrught the telepathy in battles, also he showed that Sonia doesnt mind all that blood and violence.
I really like Sonia's design. It is the eyes man, the eyes, just... captivacting.
Edit: Nice vid btw.
She's got crazy eyes, always way too wide
Sonia is leagues less unlikable than Nina. I actually I admire Sonia’s role within the Neo-Band of The Hawk. Shes childishly naive.
Big Agree. Nina also works within the context of the story/her role but is more unlikable due to her cowardly nature. Sonia is a character I saw a lot of hate for too so I wanted to cover this one before Nina as that one would probably be way more difficult to justify.
Spired another problem with Nina is it’s implied she’s old enough to not make such shitty decisions. Whereas Sonia is a bit aloof and “goofy?” So I find her actions and attitude justifiable. But that being said I don’t hate Nina either because she’s a very grey character and very complex. Many people would act as she did during her inquisition so I understand her but she leans into that very unlikable stream a lot. Great video bud, keep it up!
Matthew Stewart some people think that she's a foil of Casca , and maybe something horrible will happen to her.
I didn't know people thought Sonia was annoying. I always thought she was weird but also really adorable, I have a weak spot for adorable characters lol
She is a lamb for slaughter, naive and easily influence nothing more...we have all gone through that stage somewhere in our lives before
To balance to who always say "i didn't know she was hated" and " i liked her". I hate her first in her arrogance like she always think that shes kind of special because she has some skill but if you parallel that to schierke you never hear her say that. Sure she knows shes different but shes never like "ooo its hard being different". Over all i just hate her.
Spired I´m loving these videos with deep analysis of the story and characters.
This is such a great analysis! Really. Congratulations! I've always found the character of Sonia quite interesting and surrounded by a mesmerizing mystery. To be honest, I'm not convinced she doesn't know what Griffith really is, and what he had to do to achieve such a power. She might not fathom all the details, but I have a feeling that she knows better.
Another thing that intrigues me about Sonia is why does Griffith make it so it seems she's an indispensable member of his new Band of the Hawk? I mean... For all we know, he's basically untouchable. He doesn't need her to guide him to victory.
To me, it looks like Sonia could be an equivalent to Casca, which used to be his second in command. And for some reason, Griffith/Femto wants to fulfill every main spot of the previous formation of the Band of the Hawk.
P.S: I really appreciate your diction and the pace you speak at. It's very clear and helps me a lot with my listening. Thanks! :)
P.P.S: Sorry for any spelling mistakes and bad phrasing. As you probably suspect now, English is not my first language.
Luka is the best ! Luka best girl, awesome, she may be weak and can't do much in her univers, but still, she goes all in and actually makes a difference for someone. Rarely did we see someone in berserk (or in real life for that matter) take care of other people in such conditions. What I also like is that she isn't foolish either. She is very intelligent and knows how people can be.
Really liking your Berserk videos, fam. Becoming a new favorite now.
i don't think anyone said or hinted at that she's badly written, i don't know why you kept being apologetic about it.
she's hated because she represents a specific type of women, ("my bad boy never does anything wrong" delude herself and turns a blind eye to everything he does).
Granted that is not in the majority but it's more so people who find annoying characters to be badly written based on the pretext they are unlikable. I did not make this as a defence to the majority just maybe change the minds of a few of this weird notion that unlikable characters are bad ones by default.
Yep that's why I hate her so much tbh I wanna ser die in the most excruciating way ever!!!! Just pretending everything is ok when clearly is not...
I don’t think Sonia know of the Eclipse. From her point of view and from everyone who isn’t Guts, Griffith is like an angel
i didn't take the eclipse into consideration at all.
I hope that in the last 3 years you realized how this assesment was wrong. That's not what she represents.
Sonia is a qt either way
Snek the Guardsman Cutie-Patootie!
@@WrathofFenrir99 Either Femto can block her mind-scrying powers, or (What's worse.) Sonia already know the full extent of Griffith's vile misdeeds. And that means Sonia has some fucked-up morals.
@@edwardgaines6561 true, but she still qt tho
WE HAVE YOU SURROUNDED, AT LEAST FROM THIS SIDE
you could fit an entire airport on her forehead XD
I don't know why but I find her really sinister and creepy and not naive at all like other people are saying. For example she is unphased by the war demons and even thinks about bringing them a corpse to eat, just creepy. She's either extremely naive or just crazy.
People hate her, because Sonia is oblivious to her place in the world, she chases after Griffith knowing what's best for him is to marry the princess, she befriends demons not knowing they will not spare her life if they deem her a nuisance to Griffith, she constantly reminds Griffith that she would do anything for him, yet she fails to see her own vanity and she has a special power to see things ordinary people cant see yet she fails to see the Femto or maybe she ignores his existence.
I just realized how buff Griffith looks in the black swordsman arc. Of course his armor is also making him look buffer but he just looks bulkier.
I don't hate her i just find her annoying with her worship of Griffith much like i was annoyed at casca in the golden age arc. I feel her character will be fleshed out more hell i find the pope and process Charlotte annoying too.
She was granted her power by the Idea of Evil so she could act as a nexus between realities... and so she does.
She was shown a change that she longed for, and she embraced it.
She just doesn't realize that her objective/vision it's just a step of the God Hand's final aim.
i never really hated the apostles, i always pitied them more. Characters like Zodd may be evil from a human perspective but he still has his own sort of code of honour, and the Count and that dog dude always hit me as very tragic characters. So Sonya being nice to them never really bothered me.
John Wilbur eh, never took Zodd for being evil at all. But most apostles are just evil, sadistic monsters. Not to say most people in power in Berserk isn’t like that.
Nice video once again :) You delivered your point across really well and balanced. I personally never had a problem with Sonia.
I think another big reason she clings to Griffith is because "as she spread her wings as a kite and flew towards him. (For the first time)" Griffith, completely accepted her for who she is. He even acknowledges her and her unique ability. (Which is very impactful considering, how she perceives Griffith) This makes her "know" that there is a feeling of care from Griffith which is specifically for her. Which then feels mutual, making the hold/bond he has on her tighter. Meanwhile her infatuation continues to grow...
P.S: I am assuming that Griffith probably treated young Casca in a much similar way, when she joined.
I really didn't know people hated Sonia, wow. I was always afraid for her while I was reading, though. Like eventually Griffith would betray her horribly like he did to the Band of the Hawks. It is kind of annoying when she's all over Griffith when Charlotte's right there, but she's a young impressionable kid who's life was saved by a Saint-like dude. I don't blame her.
Rest in Peace, Kentaro Miura.
Also peep that The Wolf Among Us soundtrack in the background.
You know It!
I guess her function in the story is to be an opposite Cassandra. Cassandra said that something horrible was going to happen, nobody listened. Sonia would think that there's nothing wrong in Falconia / With Griffith but the facade will disappear.
Ever heard of the "Cassandra Truth" trope?
I actually found her to be worse than Nina. Nina was a coward, and her cowardice led her to commit evil Acts, but at least she had a conscience.
Sonia was a classic sociopath. And a well written one at that, I'm legitimately worried for Schierke now XD
I never thought Sonia was a bad character just because I hated her, same as Nina. If anything, them being so hateable is really good writing
I've never had a problem with her.
Me neither
Is she the new casca (griffith's sword)?
More like eyes than a sword. I'd say Zodd or the other key apostles are his new sword.
SLUG BOY
If he rapes zodd then im done with Berserk.
She wants Griffith’s sword
@@Ropewatch that's hilarious...I actually hope that's happens
@@Ropewatch that will be an eye to see atleast Guts and Zod will share more then one thing
She is the mockery of Casca's memories. That's girl having no idea what she was dealing with.
Great video! A small piece of constructive criticism, repeating a previous point a couple of times is alright, but remember to not get too repetitive, as I felt you said the same point many times.
Sonia is just a caricature of young ladies who think their favorite rockstars are perfect and can't make mistakes, and i think casca was like that too that's why she become crazy when she learned the truth about her master, but for sonia, she crossed the line between an innocent rockstar fan and a crazy and irrational fanatic when she called a people who are questioning about Griffith nature Idiots
I like Sonia because I think she will present a great mirror to Casca when she comes back. With casca needing to face a version of herself from the past someone who was so blindly loyal to Griffith
That's what will surely happen in the next arc since Griffith had brought Casca to Falconia!
sonia's speech telling the human soldiers to accept the apostle army is the cringiest speech in anime history. Even fairy tails nakama speech is better than that
@@synchaos9141 he means the way the speech was written, not what it was meant to accomplish.
Oh yeah I forgot about that. Not one of Miura's best writing moments.
nah that's the best speech in anime history because it's ironic af. It's not a nakama speech, it's a parody of one.
The cheese was intentionally added in so it could sound like a legend folktale, and in the end the solders were actually persuaded by that. Yet as a reader, having gone though the Eclipse and the apostles, we know that it's bs. The speech that could create such opposite reactions between the characters and the reader base on how well they know the apostles was a great one.
Great vid. Cheers
Know this is old but I’m just now getting to some of these. Really well thought out and I have my own insights into the character. I think she’s just as dark and twisted as Griffith even if she is outwardly nice and quirky. What you said would hold up if it wasn’t for one thing. She’s a straight mind reader. She should have a good chunk of backstory from just being around Gutz and company and all the demons. Even if she doesn’t have the whole picture she should have a good idea what happened to the old “band of the hawk”. She strikes me more as a religious fanatic who doesn’t care about what’s to come or how dark Griffith really is only happy she’s the semi center of his kingdom for now. More than anything I feel like Griffith sees her as a tool much like everything else.
Also while he is mostly the big bad he’s ultimately just a finger of a hand of a much more malevolent entity and even if his ideal world comes to pass it can’t be that things end game. Sonia strikes me as someone who’d sacrifice themselves willingly. Maybe Miura was going for something different and I’m completely off base but I feel her gentle persona was a semi guise for something he’d develop with her character later on. Sadly we’re getting a shadow of his vision but I’m along for the long haul. Been reading since early 90s right out of HS and can’t believe it’s still going. Glad his fellow mangaka is committed to closing it out. This being 4 years old a lot has happened (well relative to Berserk) since this was first uploaded.
Griffith deserves the hate after the eclipse. Its hard to make the distinction between his actions after the eclipse and during however after the eclipse, he basically played his role in his story that he orchestrated to fool the masses, down to the kushan king refusing to kneel for him and turning to Shiva tower and the skull knight using the blade of actuation and merging the physical and astarl world. His kingdom needed zero action or hardship from him after the eclipse. He literally did nothing but ride the motions and wheels of fate. An achievement or reward without any effort is not worth it. He'll be cursed with boredom maybe... His comrades deaths just paved the path for his dream. Even the theatrics of Sonia speech for humans and demons to fight was a pre requisite to Falconia creation, even though he didn't have to let his "comrades" of humans and demons die. It was just a show for him to fool them into following him
This channel deserves more scribes
Nina is the greatest villain in Berserk, even Griffith got a nice smack to the face from Rickard, while Nina slowly kills her man with Syphilis and sex cults and she just got to have a happy ending like "Lol, I'm fucked up, but you're almost as pathetic as me, so lets run away together!"
Good video btw, Sonia is pretty cool
All I have to add is that Sonia is neither a duck, nor a Kite, she is clearly a Loon.
I'm waiting for the day that she gets to see Femto up close and personal.
Defence of Donovan
@@TheAngelmisa but he's extremely important to the story
Realistic LGBTQ+ figure
We need more of them 👏👏👏
Just realised the duck-shaped helmet, litterally a following bird.
God I love you man
Sonia talk about Dragon, and godo was talking about slaying dragon when guts took the drgaon slayer.
I guess Sonia will find out that she the kite isn't like the Hawk at all, because the Hawk is really a serpent.
It's still to early to "judge" her. We don't know how her arc would end. I think that Grifith ultimate goal is to asscend even higher if possible and he's just gathering a massive human sacrafice. At some point in the story Sonia will discover the truth and will be torn apart between saving the world and her love to her saviour. Whatever she choose, only tragic fate awaits her (like every moratl and demon that follow Femto).
I think there is definitely room to use Sonia well if she is paired off with either Scheirke (for obvious reasons) and maybe even Farnese (possibly seeing some of the blind-faith in sonia she once had herself). Honestly I quite like Sonia thus far - she was great in her time with schierke and also offers another perspective to griffith that many of us wouldn't see ordinarily.
maybe paired off in the future with princess Charlotte when they realize the true nature of Griffith
what no pairing with mule?^^
I understand the character and you can tell that Miura has BIG plans for her. Good video!
What is really frustrating is that none of them knows that griffith does not think much of them, and they embrace him like a god or something
That's the point Griffith is a master manipulator even in the golden age he presented himself as a savoir
HinSpired! Couldmyou do a Schierke vid? She's best and super important, but there are not many videos on her
I must say i love how she rally the war demons and humans together in war. Such beauty sense of war.
I like Sonia: she appears in many of my favorite doujins. :^)
Every time Sonia showed up after she was saved I wanted to wring her fuckin neck, and that probably won’t change, BUT that doesn’t make her a bad character, she’s very well written and I can accept that.
okok U hammered home the point. context of the story
i think she has so much potential as a character, I can´t wait to see what goes on with her friendship with schierke and I see her as some sort of an equal to Griffith (well, as much as a human can) and I think that´s very very interesting
Sonia had her entire life destroyed by the Kushans. Then she was rescued by the legendary hero who saved Midland, Griffith, who returned in their time of need. Then she learns she has magical powers not dissimilar to Griffith, and is given a special and valued position in the new Band of the Hawk, a dream come true for this young girl. To cope with the trauma of losing everything she has embraced a what would be a fantasy for many young girls, fighting demonic invaders with a handsome magical boyfriend with many strange and helpful creatures at her side. Yet when she sees Griffith with Charlotte, a girl with no remarkable talents in her eyes, the fantasy is shattered and this is why I think she keeps trying to get Griffith’s attention, so she no longer has to face the reality that all of the people who love her are dead. I am really interested to see how she deals with Casca, who knows what Griffith has done and can challenge her view of him. How she will react when the mask slips and if she finds out about the eclipse, and that the storybook prince who saved the world doesn’t care about her.
Can you do video about emperor ganihka
I think a part of it is the fact that Griffith is kind to her.
I never minded Sonia, actually I always considered her to be an interesting character and I loved the scene with her and Schierke ♥
The only character I truly consider annoying is Charlotte, because her blind devotion towards Griffith gets on my nerves (but then again, I pity her, because said devotion might come from what Griffith did to her).
@Griffith Taka Ikr
I wonder what Rose Tico and Vice-admiral Holdo represent in Star Wars
Saying the apostles are wicked by default seems a bit much. Zodd, Grunbeld, and even the hunter whose name escapes me don't strike me as being evil. They seem to just exist following their own ambition.
why takagi-san hugging griffith ?
Wait people hate Sonia?
I love Sonia, I find her so entertaining and interesting
The only things I don't like about her are her confidence (one of the only characters to feel no discomfort around demons or atrocities). The fact she constantly tries to get between Charlotte and Griffith. The fact she fan girls over Griffith (this I can somewhat forgive), and her speech about the demon horde that Griffith commands that made all the humans accept them like it wasn't a big deal.
I always read Sonia's voice as that of the girl from poltergeist who says "They're heeeeere!" whenever she spoke about prophecies and crap.
10:56 Why the heck am I crying?
I think Sonia has the potential to become a good foil to Casca.
A kind of twisted reflection who doesn't know the terrible things Griffith has done to the the previous Hawks and needing to be enlightened to the truth.
Both Sonia and Griffith were always some of my favorite characters. Fuck Ivalera tho.
Nobody thinks she’s poorly written, instead she’s written really well to allow people to hate on her.
I think there's potential for an analysis even further as the trio of Guts/Casca/Schierke relate to Griffith/Charlotte/Sonia. Schierke also augments Guts power and also can't be with him because of Casca.
Do we know that her medium abilities are inherent rather than being obtained through becoming a sorceress?
I didn't even realize she was in need of defending. I found her really endearing.
Finally someone gets it....I didnt mind her.
If Griffith ever activates the behelit again, Sonia is gonna get sooo sacrificed, although it is posible she might welcome being raped and eated alive for Griffith, she crazy
I really like sonia so i was surprised this year when i found out alot of people do hate her.
I didn't even knew that she was hated
GRIFFFIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITH
A fantastic analogy? The symbolism of Sonia's story was so on the nose it was grating, and even Schierke should've realized the selfish message within the story.
She only saw the shell of Grifit, not his true core. Is undersable that she following the masque because she will never going to look the true face.
I don't know about Sonia. She seems like that friend that thinks all normal silence in a conversation is awkward.
Very nice defense of Sonia. I think it's Sonia's blind loyalty and the predisposition to disregard of any potential upcoming red flags about Griffith that annoys some readers. In other words, Fanaticism. Blind, Stubborn, devout and desperate fanaticism.(one of same reason among many why Farnese was not exactly liked in her introduction too) All because she found someone who,in her deep rooted despair of not finding a place to belong, to cling to and to build on her yearning for an identity. I don't know why ppl would say she's badly written. I do agree on her being unlikable though. She is like the snooty, stubborn, know-it-all drunk half friend who is about to leave the bar with Ted Bundy because he said something she can relate to.
What if Sonia will be the one the use the last behelit?!
I did not know Sonia was a hated character. I don't see her of someone to hate. More as someone to or fear for her unique skill empowers King Griffith or pitty her naiveness and for her not to know the truth about who she worship. Griffith can charm anyone with ease to do almost anything he likes. So any girl and many other people that need to be value and have a dreams with a bright leader to show them a new shinny future to them just to follow along can easy be carried away. At first I as reader of the story was carried away by Griffith charismatic skill and never imagine the monster he turn out later to be.
For some reason I feel something sad will happend to Sonia. Maybe is just me being bit pessimists. Would prefer a nice ending for her.
I can’t believe anyone would dislike Caska MkII
This part that she reads your thoughts it drives me crazy
I think what people hate the most about Sonia is her "pick me, I'm not like other girls" attitude towards Griffith and her jealousy of Charlotte, a truly innocent character in comparison since Sonia might be immature but she's not naïve. And now there's also Irvine, who looks strangely similar to Guts...
: )
Sonia taking solace in her abilities giving her something unique with Griffith kind of reminds me of Schierke reflecting on her unique role with Guts where her astral form joins Guts when he activates the Berserker armor.
I honestly came to like Sonia a lot more for her budding friendship with Schierke. The whole time I was reading this scene, I had a sense of foreboding and fear for Schierke as Sonia is on team Griffith - with Griffith potentially setting his sights on witches beyond just Flora. Yet, everything was fully sincere and nice.
I'm not a fan of Sonia, but I love the dynamic she and her bodyguard have, the lil goofballs
Hope she doesn't try to murder Charllote to get to Griffith and he flips his shit over it cause then Sonia/bodyguard are ded
